A MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARYMary M. Kolar, Secretary WDVA

Greetings! The winter holidays are upon us, and while we begin to celebratethe traditions of the season – wrapping presents and hanging decorations – Iknow this year’s festivities will still be far from typical again this year. I amgrateful for our King staff who have worked the past 12 months to safelykeep the homes open for visitors, reluctantly closing when health conditionswarranted it, and kept our veteran members safe and sound.

While we continue to adjust our lives around the impact of the COVID-19virus, perhaps the most important part of many holiday celebrations will bethe opportunity to cautiously gather again due to the vaccines and boostershots now available. Vaccines are the major reason we will be able to gatheragain more safely with our families and loved ones. If you have not beenvaccinated, I strongly urge you to do so to keep yourself and our veteranheroes protected. If you plan to visit our home at King, please observe all ourhealth regulations and precautions upon arriving and during your visit.

If you are unable to visit your veteran family member this year, I encourageyou to call them by phone, send letters of love, or connect via virtualmethods when possible. As you can imagine, a heartfelt message fromfamily means the world to our members. All our staff and members at Kingcelebrate holidays together as “extended family” and will do so again thisholiday season.

I am also thankful for the veterans and their families who have chosen tomake the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King their home. My gratitude to allour staff who work to provide quality care, a clean and safe environment, and entertaining activities for our members. I wish everyone at King afestive holiday season and a joyous new year!

WELCOME NEWMEMBERS!

BORN IN A MANGER -- “And she brought forth her firstborn son, andwrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger;because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:7/KJV).” Have you ever noticed how depictions of Jesus’ birthplace onChristmas cards look so charming? Those picturesque Nativityscenes stir up warm and sentimental feelings. You might evenimagine yourself rolling out a sleeping bag and spending the nightthere with some hot chocolate and Christmas cookies. It might be helpful to remember that a manger is a feeding trough forlivestock. Jesus was born in a cattle stall. The temperature in thatplace was not so comfortable. The smells were not so pleasant. Thesleeping arrangements were far from ideal for the new-born King. Yet this God-ordained setting for Jesus’ birthplace is a powerfulforeshadowing of what Jesus’ whole life would be like…one ofhumility, service, and sacrifice. Experiencing warm and sentimental feelings at Christmas is a goodthing. And I look forward to drinking lots of hot chocolate and eatingtons of Christmas cookies. With that said, as we gaze into themanger once again this Christmas may we clearly see the humbleSavior. He gave up all His glory for us! He was born to die on theCross for our sins and then rise again from the dead to give us eternallife. That stirs up joy and gratitude in the hearts of all believers inChrist! Merry and Blessed Christmas! Chaplain Ben Schroeder Lutheran Chaplain
