RHS Trial of Courgette 2013 (bush, cylindrical types)

Introduction:

There were 49 entries in the Trial submitted by various seed companies in the UK, Europe and North America. The objectives of the trial were to assess a range of cultivars; to recommend the Award of

Garden Merit [AGM] to outstanding cultivars for garden use and to demonstrate the cultivation of this crop.

Judging and Recommendation for the Award of Garden Merit: The over-arching criteria for recommendation of plants for the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) are:

Excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions

Available

Of good constitution

Essentially stable in form and colour

Reasonably resistant to pests and disease

The trial was assessed for the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Vegetable Trials Assessment Forum on 21 August and 10 September 2013, for the following attributes:

plant habit; fruit colour - skin and flesh; fruit size and texture; earliness; ease of picking;

resistance to pest and disease Cultivation: Seeds were sown in jiffy pots under glass, one seed per pot, during the week commencing 13 May 2013. Young plants (three per entry) were hardened off by placing outside under fleece prior to planting out on 11 June, spaced at one metre between plants and one metre between cultivars. Sulphate of ammonia (24g/m2) and sulphate of potash (20g/m2) were applied as fertilisers on 18 June. Plants were irrigated as necessary during the trial. On 26 June plants were sprayed as a preventative measure against aphid. During late August and September the trial was sprayed intermittently with potassium bicarbonate to help protect against mildew.
