What do a great bassist, former mainstay of the Miles Davis Quintet, a farce composed by Rossini in Venice, a Khmer group that mixes pop culture with Cambodian music, and the mu-sicians of The Academy of St Martin in the Fields all have in common?

They’re all on the 2016 programme of Musiques en été, with 36 concerts on offer for those of you who are in Geneva over the summer. The concerts are being held at the Ella Fitzger-ald Stage and the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville. As this year’s poster suggests: Come on in, the water’s fine!

Not only do these concerts aim to amaze and surprise you, they also reflect Geneva’s international and multicultural traditions and its vibrant music scene.

Excellence, syncopated rhythms, fusion and passion will all be present at the event this summer. Will you?

Qu’y a-t-il de commun entre un immense contrebassiste, ancien pilier du Miles Davis Quintet, une farce composée à Venise par Rossini, un groupe khmer au carrefour de la pop culture et de la musique cambodgienne et des musiciens de l’Academy of St Martin in the Fields ?

Ils font tous partie de la programmation de l’édition 2016 des Musiques en été, et des 36 concerts proposés à celles et à ceux qui seront à Genève lors de la période estivale. Ces concerts auront lieu sur la scène Ella Fitzgerald ainsi que dans la cour de l’Hôtel de Ville, et je souhaite qu’ils vous mènent dans une onde rafraîchissante, comme celle qu’éprouve le person-nage de l’affiche de cette édition.

En effet, ces concerts ont pour objectifs de vous émerveiller et de vous surprendre, mais également, par un effet de miroir, de montrer la tradition internationale et multiculturelle de Genève, ainsi que la vitalité de sa scène musicale.

Pour ce premier concert jazz de l’été, la Ville de Genève a l’honneur d’accueillir le contrebassiste de légende Ron Carter. Sa carrière est tout simplement phénoménale, il a été un des piliers du Miles Davis Quintet, il a plus de 2000 enregistrements à son actif, cela fait de lui un des musiciens de jazz les plus demandés. Ron Carter présentera son trio « The Golden Striker », formation intimiste, sans batterie, laissant la part belle à ces trois improvisateurs de haut vol !

For this first jazz concert of the summer, the City of Geneva is honoured to welcome the legendary double-bassist Ron Carter. His career has been quite simply phenomenal. He was one of the mainstays of the Miles Davis Quintet and has over 2000 recordings to his credit, making him one of the most sought-after of jazz musicians. Ron Carter will be presenting his trio “The Golden Striker”, a drummerless chamber format starring these three high-flying improvisers!

Pour ouvrir la série classique de Musiques en été, le violoncelliste germano-canadien Johannes Moser vient interpréter la pièce qui lui valut en 2002 un prix spécial (en plus du premier prix !) au prestigieux Concours Tchaïkovski de Moscou : les Variations sur un thème rococo. Composée en 1877 par Piotr Ilitch Tchaïkovski qui voulait rendre ici hommage à Mozart, cette œuvre redoutable exige du soliste autant de virtuosité que d’élégance. Cerise sur le gâteau : le soliste vous propose la rare version originale de l’ouvrage !

To launch the classical music series of Musiques en été, the German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser will be interpreting the piece that won him a special prize (plus the first prize!) at the prestigious Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow in 2002: the Variations on a Rococo Theme. Composed in 1877 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as a tribute to Mozart, this formidable work demands both virtuosity and elegance on the part of the soloist. The icing on the cake: Johannes Moser will be performing the rare original version of these Variations!

Pour ceux qui pensent que rire est nécessaire à la vie et que c’est une manière de s’approcher du paradis sur terre.

The last of five farces composed in Venice by the young Rossini, a crescendo of gay madness where everything – fate, the cun-ning young lovers, the smug adults – seems to conspire against poor Bruschino. But the maestro’s ironic perspective soars above the agitated beings and an irresistible musical whirlwind sweeps the characters away until the final unexpected turn of events that leaves the audience breathless. For those who think that laughter is vital and takes us part of the way towards paradise on earth.

Le Quatuor Diotima se plaît à défendre la musique du 20e siècle et son programme en témoigne avec la Suite lyrique d’Alban Berg, œuvre essentielle de la seconde école de Vienne qui nous prouve que sens mélodique et dodécaphonisme sont deux éléments parfaitement conciliables. Vienne et lyrisme toujours, mais cent ans plus tôt, avec le Quatuor « Rosamunde » de Franz Schubert. Le très rare Quintette pour piano et cordes écrit en 1963 par Alberto Ginastera sera sans nul doute une découverte pour beaucoup d’auditeurs.

The Quatuor Diotima loves defending 20th century music and its programme reflects this with a performance of Alban Berg’s Lyric Suite, a quintessential work of the Second Viennese School which proves that a sense of melody and the twelve-tone technique are two perfectly reconcilable elements. Equally lyrical and also from Vienna, although a hundred years earlier, is the Rosamunde Quartet by Franz Schubert. The extremely rare Quintet for Piano and Strings composed in 1963 by Alberto Ginastera will no doubt be a real discovery for many listeners.

London-born Pierre Omer is an entrenched figure in Geneva’s alternative rock scene, known also for his band The Dead Brothers and for producing the first Mama Rosin album. With Pierre Omer’s Swing Revue, he recalls the golden age of Harlem, New Orlean's swamps, jive's surreal fantasy and gypsy swing beats put together to create an explosive dancing cocktail of old numbers and own compositions, performed by four groovy gentlemen in tuxedos.

Les influences surf et rockabilly de Sonido Gallo Negro baignent dans la chica péruvienne et l'imagerie des chasseurs de tête amazoniens. Avec des références au Mercado de Sono-ra de Mexico avec ses fleurs, amulettes, bougies incroyables et animaux à sacrifier. Sur scène, le groupe instrumental procède à de véritables séances d’hypnose collective.

Don’t let their Mexican origins fool you; this is psychedelic Ama-zonian retro-cumbia at its best! Sonido Gallo Negro’s rockabilly and surf influences are steeped in Peruvian chica. The inspira-tion drawn from Mercado de Sonora in Mexico, with its incred-ible flowers, amulets, candles and animals for sacrifices, is not complete without the mention of Amazonian headhunters. The concerts by this eight-piece instrumental band are exercises in collective hypnosis.

La soirée des formations rares avec les musiciens de l’Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Sextuor et octuor à cordes sont des genres représentés avec parcimonie dans l’histoire de la musique, mais illustrés ici par deux sommets. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy n’avait que seize ans lorsqu’il composa son Octuor en mi bémol majeur. Une partition de style symphonique qui démontre déjà une maturité véritablement bluffante. Génie moins précoce, Johannes Brahms attendra ses presque trente ans pour livrer son Sextuor n° 1 en si bémol majeur. Là encore, un jalon.

An evening of rare formations with musicians from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. The string sextet and octet are genres not often found in music history, but two supreme examples of them are being presented on this occasion. Felix Mendelssohn was only sixteen when he composed his Octet in E-flat major, a symphonic style score that already shows truly astounding maturity. A less precocious genius, Johannes Brahms, was to wait almost thirty years before writing his Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major. Another tremendous musical milestone.

Fruit radicalement contemporain de la rencontre entre highlife, disco, percussions joyeuses et le gémissement des synthés. Les paroles de la chanteuse, en ibibio (langue parlée au sud-est du Nigeria), sont portées par le jeu légendaire du guitariste ghanéen Alfred « Kari » Bannerman, lui-même soutenu par les percussions du Brésilien Anselmo Netto. Ces trois sont l’épine dorsale de cet animal fêtard à seize pattes qui s’appelle Ibibio Sound Machine. Let’s dance !

Ibibio Sound Machine’s unique sound is born out of the cultural melting pot of London today. It’s what happens when highlife, disco, playful percussion and wailing synths meet. Quelque vingt-cinq ans plus tard, l’opus 59 n° 1 se révèle d’une ambition inédite dans la production de Ludwig van Beethoven qui marquait là son indépendance vis-à-vis de ses deux illustres prédécesseurs. A meeting of great masters featuring composers who took the demanding genre of the string quartet to a whole new level. With his String Quartet No. 14 in G major (K. 387) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart proved he was indeed a match for Joseph Haydn in this domain. Nouvelle sensation des claviers, Cory Henry a été révélé au public par ses collaborations époustouflantes avec le groupe Snarky Puppy. Son nouveau projet The Revival rend hommage à son premier amour, l’orgue Hammond B3, instrument qu’il a commencé à pratiquer à l’âge de deux ans à l’église. Lors de leurs concerts, ils présentent des classiques khmers revisités ainsi que des morceaux originaux de la chanteuse Channthy Kak qui mène le bal avec son timbre, son rythme et son cran.

In the 1960s, Cambodia was the funkiest kingdom on the planet infusing tradition with the rock’n’roll that invaded the region along with the American GIs. This golden age of Cambodian rock was to end apocalyptically in Pol Pot’s terror regime. Cambodian Space Project is today at the forefront of an astonishing cultural revival from within Cambodia. The haunting softness of the harmonica opens Blick Bassy’s beautiful album Akö, nominated for this year’s Songlines Award. Evoking the spirit of Skip James, this unique record weaves various threads from the southern United States, France and Cameroon, through the Basaa lyrics (one of Cameroon’s 260 languages). A poignant album brilliantly interpreted by Blick Bassy’s dreamy falsetto.
