COUPLE H AS DEEP ROOTS IN THE VINCENTI A N FA MILY
hat do a former seminarian and a postulant to the life of a religious sister have in common? 48 years of
marriage! Bill and Mary Tarnow of Lombard, Illinois, have deep roots in their Catholic faith. Bill was a student at St. Vincent Seminary in Lemont, Illinois, and Mary was discerning a vocation with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Together they followed the vocation of married life, and they remain enthusiastic supporters of the religious life. God has blessed their marriage with four children and eleven grandchildren.
“We have a special commitment to supporting the educational mission and seminary work of the Vincentians,” said Bill. “The Vincentians have had such a lasting impact on my life.”
Mary and Bill are regular contributors of their time and treasure. They find a special grace in participating with the Vincentians, who are quietly serving the poor, making a bond with the less fortunate among us around the world.
“We would like to tell others that by being part of the Vincentian mission, you can accomplish much more than on your own,” Mary added. “It is something we both learned in our early lives, influenced by religious communities.”
The couple are among the many contributors to our mission in Kenya,
East Africa. The funding of the basic needs of life – food, clothing, water and medicine – is something we take for granted every day.

“We admire the Vincentians’ quiet
humility and gentleness.”– William Tarnow
Mary and Bill Tarnow
Dear FrienDs,
As I look out of my office window this morning, the weather is just plain awful. We awoke to freezing rain, and at the moment it is snowing. The weather forecaster says it may or may not turn to freezing rain again, or simply rain. Tomorrow, snow is most likely.
All of this has me thinking of Lent and the rather bleak and dreary feeling that we traditionally associate with this season of the Church. After all, we are called to think about our mortality and sinfulness, aren’t we? On Ash Wednesday, we were admonished to “turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel.”
Bleak and dreary, for sure, but not without hope. Easter is on the horizon, and with that, the promise of new life in Christ Jesus. That gives me hope, no matter what the weather is like outside.
Do you know what else gives me hope? You! Yes, you. And people like William and Mary Tarnow. I get hope from all the members of the Vincentian family who took part in the World’s Big Sleep Out back in December. Hope fills my heart when I send one of our Vincentian priests off to the foreign missions – like Fr. Toshio Sato, C.M.
I am also hopeful when I learn about all the people who are supporting our work in Kenya through our Kenya Appeal, whether through a parish collection or a gift sent directly to us. This and other stories you’ll read about in our newsletter give me hope.
Thank you for being a source of real, tangible hope for us Vincentians, and, more importantly, for the people we serve. In a world that often seems dark and gloomy, isn’t it great that we have hope in each other and in Jesus Christ? No matter what the weather is like outside, I can always find a reason for hope because of the good work we can do together for those who need our help. Come rain, snow or sunshine, let’s get ready to sing, “Alleluia!”
Fr. Ray Van Dorpe, C.M.Provincial Superior
“ Your generosity helps our mission to the people of Kenya.”
Father Milton Ryan, C.M., pastor, and Father Mike Walsh, C.M., associate pastor, lead this strong faith community in the tradition of St. Vincent. Recently, Fr. Joe Williams, C.M., assistant provincial, visited Holy Trinity and spoke at all Masses, offering a message of gratitude for the ongoing
financial and spiritual support of this growing faith community. The wonderful hospitality after each Mass is a Vincentian tradition, as is the vibrant spirit of welcoming and worship.
The devoted people in our Vincentian parishes help support our ministries
throughout the United States including the training of seminarians as well as the retirement needs of our senior priests and brothers.
oly Trinity Parish in Dallas has a long Vincentian heritage. Sitting today in the heart of a bustling, cosmopolitan city, the parish was originally founded as a mission church. One hundred years ago, a great part
of the priests’ time and effort was spent on the road to small mission churches scattered around North Texas in what could only be defined as a wilderness area. Holy Trinity continues its missionary tradition to this day, with lay ministries involved in service and outreach to the larger community.
Perhaps it is this aspect that makes Holy Trinity seem different as a parish community, explaining why so many of its families come from outside the parish boundaries. Holy Trinity is, in many ways, still a mission church.
H“Thank you on behalf of those
helped by your gifts.”– Fr. Joe Williams, C.M.

FamilY has Deep roots in the Vincentian FamilY(Continued from page 1)
Mary and Bill contribute toward helping the five parishes and twenty outstations in Kenya run by Vincentians. It is like a miracle every day in the lives of hundreds of people. “Every gift helps someone, every day,” said Bill.
The Tarnows are not shy about their faith and their commitment to helping the poor. They raised their children to be grateful and generous. Not only is their faith a constant part of their family life, but it has also become a generational grace as they see their children and grandchildren living their Catholic faith . . . in the way of St. Vincent.

Fr . toshio sato, c.m. becomes a u.s. citizen
He grew up a farm boy in a rural area of Japan, 150 miles north of Tokyo. The nearest city is Fukushima the site of the nuclear reactor disaster caused by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 20,000 people.
His father was a leader at the local Buddhist temple. Every morning his grandmother faithfully said her prayers and invited the boy to sit next to her as she chanted before the Buddhist shrine in her home. This family was a traditional rural farming family growing rice.
The boy’s name is Toshio Sato. He was an excellent student who finished 5th in the local English speech competition narrowly missing qualifying for the Japanese national competition. As a seventh grade boy he was fascinated by the American DJ and radio personality Casey Kasem making weekly charts of the Top 40 rock and roll songs.
Toshio had a goal of studying international economics and enjoying the riches that come with a successful career. He came to Chicago in 1996 to work at the Japanese consulate, and found his way to DePaul University. As a student he had no idea who the Vincentians were but the influence of one priest changed his life. He attributes his conversion to the influence of his devout Buddhist family who instilled a distinctive spirituality in him and the powerful witness of the Vincentians. He converted to Catholicism in 2004 and was ordained in 2013.
Most recently Toshio has completed the requirements for citizenship in the United States. “Freedom,” he says, “comes at a price and I feel a responsibility to be a good citizen and recognize the value of liberty for all.” Fr. Toshio has responded to the worldwide Vincentian call for international missionaries and will be serving the poor in Bolivia. Toshio encourages other young men around the world to listen to the call to serve.
Toshio Sato, CM. A Japanese boy. A servant of the poor in South America. An American citizen. A Vincentian priest of Jesus Christ.
This first Global Sleep Out mobilized 60,000 people in over 50 cities around the world to sleep out and
show their solidarity with the homeless.
beneFit concert in san antonio
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in San Antonio hosted a benefit concert by David Kaufmann on Sunday, February 9, 2020, to raise awareness and financial support for the Vincentian Kenya Mission. Fr. Kevin Fausz, C.M., pastor, expressed his gratitude to all who attended this celebration of music and joyful witness. Musician and composer, Mr. David Kaufmann performs at youth rallies, colleges and churches across the United States. In 2010, he was winner of the New Mass Competition, sponsored by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the growing Vincentian mission in Kenya, East Africa. Every day, the poorest of the poor come to us needing the basic necessities of life – food, water, clothing, school fees and medical care.
tudents and faculty at DePaul University spent a night sleeping on the streets of Chicago in solidarity
with the poor, raising more than $30,000 to support the homeless. The Sleep Out was part of a global initiative to raise awareness of the increasing homelessness problem in the United States and around the world. The president of DePaul, Dr. A. Gabriel Esteban, and his wife joined the students in the cold Chicago winter.
There are an estimated half-million homeless people in America, and nearly one-third of those are unsheltered.
In the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul, the Global Sleep Out project is spearheaded by DePaul USA in seven cities. Homelessness is one of the fastest growing signs of poverty, addiction and mental illness in our country.
SFor decades, the problem has been overlooked, but the quickly expanding presence of “tent cities” in many American communities has made the homeless more visible to many.
The call to serve the poor is as urgent as it was in the time of St. Vincent. “Let us humble ourselves and give thanks to the
Eternal Father who has called us to work in . . . preaching the Good News to the poor.” (Congregation of the Mission Conference, December 6, 1658).
Unifying vision of FAMVIN
The spirit of the Vincentian Family
worldwide has the breadth and reach to impact homelessness in every part of the
globe, and is part of the unifying vision of the Congregation of the Mission Western Province.
The Vincentians have created an international alliance on homelessness to seek solutions and prayerful support for those least among us.

proVincial election in 2020
Fr. Ray Van Dorpe, C.M., will end his ministry as Provincial Superior on June 30, 2020. He has served as provincial for 7 years. Earlier this year, members of the province entered into a discernment process for the election of a new provincial.
Prayerful discernment and discussion among confreres is leading to the selection, using mailed ballots to the provincial election committee. Once an individual has received a majority of ballots, the committee will announce the new provincial. He then must be approved by the Superior General and his Council in Rome.
Please pray for the members of the Western Province, that the Holy Spirit will guide them toward a leader in the likeness of St. Vincent de Paul.

annual KenYa appeal
The Vincentians of the Western Province have had a presence in Kenya since 1980. Today, the Church in Africa is thriving! We teach in seminaries and serve in 6 parishes with many outstations serving more than 30,000 people.
The parish ministry includes building schools and digging wells to provide clean water. Vincentian services to the poor include outreach to slums, hospitals and prisons.
Please prayerfully consider a gift today at Vincentian.org/Kenya.
