May 14, 2011 Dear Friends, It is my pleasure and honor to welcome all of you to attend today’s Third Suffolk County Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration (APAHM). This is the third year the Suffolk County Executive’s Asian American Advisory Board (www.scaaab.org) is hosting this most meaningful annual celebration for Asian Pacific Americans at Charles W. Center, Stony Brook University. Each May Asian Pacific Americans across the United States celebrate the Heritage Month to remember our immigration history to the country and to cherish our rich traditions and cultures. It is also a time to recognize the outstanding contributions of the Asian Pacific Americans to the country. I am honored to chair this year’s Suffolk County Asian Pacific Heritage Month Organizing Committee. The Committee members worked extremely hard over the past few months to put today’s program together. I thank each member for his/her dedication and contribution. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our County Executive Steve Levy for forming this Board. Furthermore, I extend my deepest appreciation to Mr. Mel Guadalupe for his unconditional support of AAAB in all its functions. Last but not least, I thank our Chairman, Mr. Ramon L. Villongco, for his support, vision, and leadership. I hope this year’s celebration will enrich your understanding and appreciation of the diverse Asian Pacific American traditions. I look forward to seeing you next May and at our other AAAB-sponsored activities. Let’s celebration our heritage and enjoy the diversity of cultures in America. Truly yours,

Charles B. Wang Center at the Stony Brook University Stony Brook , New York
FREE Admission for workshops and lecture. Tea Ceremony – 1pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm (each workshop will be length of half hour), Wang Center Chapel; Instructor: Theresa Wong In China or Taiwan, when you see someone on the street, before you even say 'hello,' you say 'have you had tea yet?' Having tea is an opportunity for quiet time with someone. The Chinese tea ceremony emphasizes the tea, rather than the ceremony. What the tea tastes like, smells like, and how one tea tastes compared to the previous tea is entire focus of the ex-perience. Come join us, and experience the ceremony, the harmony, and some real great tea. Think Acupuncture – Top 10 questions about acupuncture, 1 pm – 1:45 pm, Room 101; Instructor: Ryder J. Champouillon Two acupuncturists will interact with audience with “Top 10 questions about acupuncture.” This informative workshop will discuss the most common questions asked about Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine. This health care system has been in existence with written records dating back nearly 5000 years. Popular and accepted throughout Asia it is often mis-understood in the United States. Learn how the system works, what it is useful to treat, how you can benefit from simple self treatments and how you can live a healthier life by incorporating East Asian Medicine into your life. Health Forum – Breast Cancer in Asian American Women, 2 pm – 3 pm, Room 101; Instructor: Dr. Paul Fisher Screening and early detection save life. You will find out that this is especially true for breast can-cer. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women (other than skin cancer). Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer. However, screening and early detection technologies are readily available for breast cancer and women with breast cancers that are found earlier have better outcome. Dr. Paul Fisher of Stony Brook Univer-sity Medical Center, Associate Professor of Radiology and Surgery and an expert in breast cancer and breast imaging, will talk about breast cancer and breast cancer screening in Asian American women.
