9 THE TIMES OF INDIA, BENGALURU TUESDAY, JULY 7, 2015 TIMES NATION | Sinister Scam VYAPAM DANCE OF DEATH CONTINUES TIMES NEWS NETWORK Bhopal: Adding to the string of Vyapam-related deaths in the last couple of days, two more deaths related to the ad- mission and recruitment scam were reported on Mon- day, taking the toll to 48 and further adding to Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shiv- raj Singh’s troubles. While the body of SI Ana- mika Kushwaha, who was recruited through Vyapam, was found in a lake in Sagar, constable Ramakant Pandey, a suspect in the scam, committed suicide in Tikamgarh. With Monday’s deaths, four people who were connected with the scam and its probe have died in the last 48 hours alone. But the MP government denied that the deaths have any connection with the scam. Government spokes- man Narottam Mishra and forest minister Gaurishan- kar Shejwar said Congress is playing politics over dead bodies and linking every death to the scam. Mishra said Jabalpur medical college dean Dr Arun Sharma, who died on Sunday, was also not involved in the scam probe. The body of 25-year-old Anamika was found in a lake adjacent to the Police Train- ing Academy at Sagar. She al- legedly jumped into the lake in the morning. Anamika’s father Rajlak- han Singh, a constable posted in Morena district, denied that his daughter’s death had anything to do with Vyapam, while her sister said the death was suspicious, adding that Anamika could not com- mit suicide. “The in-laws of my daughter and her hus- band demanded money from my daughter, she was ha- rassed,” Rajlakhan told TOI. In the second incident, the body of Ramakant Pandey, 35, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at the special tour- ist police outpost in Tikam- garh’s Orchha, where he was posted. Orchha SHO Dilip Singh Yadav said no suicide note was found from the spot. The Tikamgarh SP said Ra- makant, an alcoholic, was de- pressed as he was debt-ridden. Ramakant was ques- tioned by the STF probing the scam a few months ago af- ter three constables were ar- rested from Chhatarpur for fixing the recruitment ex- ams for constables. Two Cops Die In 24 Hrs; Shivraj Feels The Heat TIMES NEWS NETWORK Lucknow: Another student from King George’s Medical University has been arrested by MP police’s special task force in connection with the Vyapam scam. This is the ninth student from Lucknow’s medical university to be ar- rested in connection with the scam. Apart from him, 10 oth- ers were picked up for ques- tioning from the medical uni- versity campus but were let off. Sources in the MP STF re- vealed that most students from KGMU have played the role of solvers to facilitate their hirers. They either took the exam in place of some can- didate or sat right behind the candidate and exchanged the answer-sheets. According to KGMU authorities, the stu- dent, Virendra Bind, was ar- rested by the MP STF from his native village in UP’s Bhadohi on Saturday. A student of the 2014 batch, Bind was bro-ught to the KGMU campus on Mon- day afternoon. Addressing reporters, KGMU vice-chancellor, pro- fessor Ravi Kant, said that or- ders to cancel Bind’s hostel al- lotment were issued. 9th student from UP med varsity linked to scam held TIMES NEWS NETWORK New Delhi: While circum- stantial evidence, including seizure of medicines and an empty liquor bottle from Dr Arun Sharma’s hotel room in- dicate that a lethal concoction of alcohol and medicines might have killed the Jabalpur dean, the police as well as doc- tors probing his death are puz- zled as the initial post-mortem report terms the cause of death as ‘inconclusive’. The autopsy was con- ducted on Monday by a medi- cal board comprising AIIMS doctors, who’ve preserved the viscera for examination. It will undergo toxicology and other chemical and bio- logical tests to establish the cause of death. Apart from the liquor, Sharma is believed to have taken around four pills for diabetes and BP. Police found vials of Amtas and Gly- comer in a plastic bag with his luggage. Also found were anti- depressant pills Pexep. Doc- tors are probing if these medi- cines taken collectively along with alcohol might have reac- ted, causing death. Sharma, 64, was the dean of the Netaji Subhash Chan- dra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur and heading a team constituted by the MP gov- ernment to probe the Vya- pam scam. He was said to be diabetic and also suffered from anxiety and hyperten- sion, sources said. His father, NK Sharma, was the MP Congress chief when Pra- kash Chandra Sethi was the CM in the early to mid-1970s. The search of his hotel room led to the recovery of half a bottle of liquor which Sharma is believed to have consumed. A review of the ho- tel’s CCTV footage suggests no one met him in the room. Sharma had reached Del- hi by a flight on Saturday around 4pm and checked into Uppal Ecotel around 4.30pm. Upon arrival, he spoke to a friend in Delhi while still at the airport, according to his call record details. Prima fa- cie, no foul play seems to have occurred, cops said. Hotel authorities said Sharma had asked for a dou- ble bedroom for an overnight stay and requested them to give him a wake-up call around 4.30am on Sunday. He was to fly to Agartala around 6.10am. Hotel staff said he was last seen around 7pm during dinner after which he went to his room (number 234). The room service called Sharma on the intercom around 4.35pm but he didn’t respond. Hotel officials told police one of the room service boys was sent to his room, but his knocks went unanswered. The staff, at around 6am, called the cops, who found Sharma lying on bed in his night dress. Did lethal mix of booze, meds kill MP dean? U nion home minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said it was for the Madhya Pradesh high court to decide whether a CBI probe was required into the Vyapam scam as the special investigating team (SIT) probing the scam was reporting to the HC and not to the state government. “Court is satisfied with the SIT probe. HC will take cognizance of the things which have influenced the probe. Congress has already demanded a CBI probe in court. It is up to the HC whether the CBI should probe the scam,” Singh said. TNN Will OK CBI probe if HC orders: Rajnath Arun Sharma R attled by the death trail in the Vyapam scam, Jabalpur’s IMA (Indian Medical Association) chief, Dr Sudhir Tiwari, said on Monday that he would be forced to appoint private security guards because the police have turned a deaf ear to his requests. Not waiting for that to happen, however, Congress deputed six party workers armed with lathis outside Tiwari’s home for his security. Two days ago, Arun Sharma, the dean of a Jabalpur medical college, had handed over a 200-page file with incriminating documents on the scam to cops. Exasperated by the police’s refusal to grant him security cover, Tiwari said that his “friends in Congress” had deputed “bodyguards” in view of the deaths. TNN Denied police cover, Jabalpur IMA chief may arrange his own H e had been questioned by the Special Task Force probing the scam a few months ago. Tikamgarh SP Nimish Agarwal said Pandey, an alcoholic, had been depressed because he was saddled with mounting debt. The two cases came after the spooky deaths of TV journalist Akshay Singh just af- ter talking to the family of Namrata Damor, an alleged beneficiary of the admission rack- et who was found dead near railway tracks three years ago, and Dr Arun Sharma, dean of a medical college in Jabalpur. Sharma was part of the probe into fraudulent admissions in the medical college as part of the fraud. Uma Bharati, meanwhile, expressed re- sentment over being included in one of the Vyapam-related FIRs on the basis of the statement of an accused. “It is a very deep conspiracy. The biggest example of the deep conspiracy is that my name is in it. Because I have nothing to do with this. If I am there, then some very serious conspiracy is there,” Bharti told PTI. She acknowledged the over- powering sense of intrigue over the deaths, saying: “Maybe nobody is killing them. But the fear and shame of innocent people are causing brain hemorrhage, heart attack or suicide. When I heard my name in Vyapam, even I went through lot of trauma.” Bharati backed Chouhan in the face of the opposition’s shrill demands for his resigna- tion, saying he had a clean image. “I stand with Shivraj ji, I’m concerned about him as he’s a sensitive person,” she said. But her sympathy for her BJP colleague only under- lined the trouble the Vyapam scandal has thrown up for Chouhan when he appeared to be cruising along on the strength of his solid performance as three-term CM of a state which under his tenure grew out of the ‘BI- MARU’ club to take its place among the fast- growing ones. The day saw BJP spokesper- sons aggressively rallying around the suc- cessful satrap who risks getting stained by the scam but there was a recognition that Chouhan’s own credentials may not be suffi- cient for his defence. With the SIT set to sub- mit its charge-sheet in the scam by July 15, there are fears of the death toll rising because of the likely desperation among the kingpins. There are indications that the Chouhan government may agree to any suggestion by the Supreme Court to hand over the probe to the CBI — a demand already made by Congress and others — in order to control the damage. ‘Dead cop was an alcoholic, depressed with rising debt’ Continued from page 1 Protesters demand CBI probe into Vyapam scam T he Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a petition challenging the Madhya Pradesh high court’s decision to quash an FIR against governor Ram Naresh Yadav despite serious allegations against him in the Vyapam scam.
