for the Highland Pony

There are just three native breeds of pony that originate from Scotland one being the Highland Pony As yoursquod expect these versatile ponies are lsquobuiltrsquo for the Scottish climate and even grow an undercoat to cope with winter to allow them to live out and thrive in the coldest weather With lots of positive attributes and some royal connections too itrsquos easy to see why the Highland Pony is a firm favourite for a lot of people

It was originally bred for farm work and although still used on farms nowadays the Highland is also a great all-rounder that can be used for all types of riding and driving for both adults and children

So how can you spot a Highland Pony

bull Theyrsquore most often dun grey brown or black but do come in a wide variety of other solid coloursbull A lot have a dorsal stripe that runs down the spine and some have zebra markings on the inside of the forelegsbull They are between 13hh to 142hhbull Highlands have good bone and substance combined with terrific strength and an equable temperament

Why do we love themWe love the versatility of this native breed Over the course of their existence theyrsquove been used to plough fields carry panniers on shoots carry stags move peat across boggy ground and for forestry You might also be surprised to know that theyrsquove been used in wars up to the Second World War

Her Majesty the Queen is Patron of the Highland Pony Society and in addition she has a large working stud of Highland Ponies and breeds several youngsters each year These ponies work on the estate during the shooting season

The Highland Pony Society is a breed society that maintains a Stud Book of all Highland Ponies to ensure their genes are maintained unimpaired for purity The Societyrsquos aims include promoting the breed for a variety of work and encouraging the use of superior brood mares and good sound stallions It has a membership of over 1700 individuals and promotes their interests through study days newsletters judging seminars and more For more information contact the Highland Pony Society wwwhighlandponysocietycom or visit their stand in the Equine Village at the Royal Highland Show

King of the Road (Andrew) to hear a bit more about this growing col-lection

Long time lovers of Hiho jewellery will know that a staple piece in our

Equestrian Collection has always been a two-tone snaffle bracelet made

of sterling silver and brass plated sterling silver to give that hard-wearing style that

However last year we started looking at gold-plating as we had been asked by customers for some gold-plated pieces We found a supplier in the UK and were able to satisfy our-selves that they could deliver the quality and service that we try to uphold We started with a few select pieces our best sellers and we made a new Touch of Gold collection to allow us to showcase these special pieces

In the main we gold plate the items in the UK as it allows us to individually select which areas of the sterling silver jewellery to plate and also add a bit of Hiho individuality to the jewellery It also means that we can bespoke plate pieces for customers who want a specific piece with a touch of gold on so they can create a truly unique Hiho piece for themselves

We can offer yellow and rose gold plating and we always plate to a thickness that wonrsquot wear off too quickly We also offer a re-plating service if it is required

A t Hiho Silver we do our very best to help causes close to our heart We do this in a variety of ways including the creation of product ranges that help raise money for charities with each sale These

are designed for the charity by us and are usually available on our website on the tradestand at shows and on the charityrsquos website too Therersquos no doubt that there are lots of superb charities out there doing truly amazing things and helping lots of people but we wanted to highlight five that were particularly important to us and tell you about why and how we support them from Hihorsquos lsquoQueen Beersquo Emma Warren

Willberry Wonder Pony

ldquoWersquore in awe of Hannah Francis and her newly formed charity lsquoWillberryrsquos Wishesrsquo Hannah is a true inspira-tion who after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer a year ago started fundraising and a whole lot more We have supported Hannahrsquos previous fundrais-ing by giving products for raffles but when the opportuni-ty came to design something just for Hannah to help raise even more money we jumped at the chancerdquo

For each Exclusive Sterling Silver Willberry Wonder Pony Charm sold at pound20 pound10 goes to Hannahrsquos charity In the first week when we were only able to offer the charm on pre-order over 200 were sold raising over pound2000 for Hannahrsquos charity

Help For Heroes All our Help for Heroes pieces are made using blue (for the Navy) red (for the Army) and sky blue (for the RAF) to represent the servicemen and women the charity sup-ports As some of our Hiho team and our friends come from service families this was an important one for us to support particularly when we saw the bravery displayed by Olaf Schmidrsquos widow (amp many others) when service-men we have lost are repatriated Our King of the Road knew Emma amp Bryn Parry who founded Help for Heroes from the Shows we attend and spoke to them - and they loved the idea - so we set to work and these pieces were the result

So far Hiho customers have helped us raise nearly pound20000 for the Charity

Spinal Research rdquoSpinal injury is a real issue in equestrian sport so wersquove been aware of Spinal Research for a long time However when Claire Lomas a rider paralysed in a terrible fall walked the London Marathon a few years ago we knew we wanted to up our support Claire walked the Marathon with the aid of a ReWalk suit to help raise funds to research treatment for paralysis We wanted to help and so we cre-ated the Spinal Research Beaded Friendship Braceletrdquo

Hiho Silver made a beaded friendship bracelet using a combination of tightly woven black cord and hematite and red coral beads that took inspiration from the Spinal Research logo For each bracelet sold at full price Hiho donates pound750 to the charity

BibicldquoBibic is a local charity thatrsquos devoted to helping children with neurological and genetic conditions such as brain injury Down Syndrome Cerebral Palsy and Autism We know the great work that bibic do and how the right sup-port at the right time can make such a huge difference to the children and their families so when they approached us to make some jewellery for them we were very happy to help

Emma says ldquoMy youngest son had encephalitis when he was born and was very ill We were extremely lucky that he made a full recovery but it could have easily been a very different story Bibic helps children that arenrsquot so lucky and makes a huge difference to their livesrdquo

The two bibic pieces available both feature the bibic logo and the leather bracelet is available in purple which is the companyrsquos colour Hiho donates 25 of each sale to bibic

South West Air Ambulance ldquoMany of our customers are horse riders and country folk who fully appreciate the work of the air ambulance ndash in fact our very own Queen of the Road has given it her seal of approval We decided to create a special range for the air ambulance after they attended an incident involving a family friend in 2014 The way the team were with the family and the comfort they provided was incredible We wanted to do something to help them raise funds to sup-port their vital workrdquo

For South West Air Ambulance Hiho created a range of honeycomb jewellery as the family friend who inspired the collection was a lifelong bee keeper 20 of all sales goes to Devon Air Ambulance and Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance services

RHS Chelsea Flower ShowThrough the lensThe RHS Chelsea flower show is the go-to event for garden inspiration and ideas Since the first show in 1862 thousands of garden lovers head to the event to sample the latest in cutting edge garden design and this year I joined them The day was filled with sunshine inspiration and some shopping indulgence too

The shopping areas at Chelsea were a delight many of my favourite brands including my personal favourite Hiho Silver had retail stands and it was so lovely to browse all sorts of products for the home garden and country lifestyle As much as I enjoy the therapeutic benefits of retail therapy the brands that were at the show offered so much more Many of the companies had gone to great efforts to design their stalls as retail exhibitions Hihorsquos stand was particularly beautiful adorned with country garden plants and branches with stunning sculpted magpies from artist Belinda Sillars were positioned around the displays It was a joy to browse around

The show gardens offered a huge range of styles and themes The Morgan Stanley Garden for Great Ormond Street Hospital was my absolute favourite pick from the day I loved the use of woodland plants sculpture and the range of emotions that were evoked as I sauntered around Improved only by the discovery that the garden would be re-sited at the hospital to provide a reflective space for patients and their families A wonderful reminder of the therapeutic side to nature and the great British garden Other favourites from the day included the Watahan East and West Garden with itrsquos contemporary structures and stunning pops of colour I could absolutely see myself enjoying a post work rest in there I have to say that as a photographer it was simply heavenly to have so many colours textures and shapes to capture in my lens I think that even if I hadnrsquot got an interest in gardening there was so much to do and see it is a wonderful experience for all

All that was left was to sit back and watch the magical last hour of The Chelsea Flower Show The bell rang out and as if by magic my fellow visitors whipped out trolleys and bags to snap up their plant bargains I found such enjoyment in watching a snake of floral ladened and very happy people making their way out of the gates Even more delightful that the tube and train home became their own little floral installations as visitors from far and wide across the UK headed home with their leafy bargains So next year I will absolutely be following the petal sprinkled pavements of London to the train with my own plant purchases

Why we love Thelwellhellip

W hen you think of equestrian cartoons therersquos one name that comes to mind Thelwell The amazing range of drawings created by Norman Thelwell featuring plump ponies in a myriad of situations has formed a large part of many an equestrianrsquos education More than that theyrsquove been a much loved part of many childhoods There are few riders

who canrsquot relate to one of Thelwellrsquos cartoons Actually there are few who canrsquot relate to them all

For us Thelwell is an essential part of equestrianism Speak to any horsey person about Thelwell and yoursquoll see their face light up and a smile or even chuckle creep across their face- and thatrsquos just from memory When we had the chance to work with The Thelwell Estate and create a range of jewellery well we jumped at the chance Wersquore very excited to be able to share this with you now

Our first collection is based all around celebration featuring the lovely Penelope and a trophy and rosette These pieces are the perfect way to say well done for a great effort or triumph whether this is at Pony Club at school when competinghellipor just because We hope you love the Hiho Thelwell Collection as much as we do
