History Haiti Dominican RepublicThis aerial view of the island of
Hispaniola shows the country of Haiti on the left and the Dominican Republic on the right. You can see that the right side of the map is much more green and lush. This is due to the fact that the two countries natural resources were managed in different ways. The Dominican Republic side of the island was managed more conservatively . The Haitian side was abused by the French that new very little about the importance of soil conservation. It is difficult for plants to grow on the Haitian side now that the nutrient rich soil is gone.
GeographyTectonic Plate BoundariesThe geography of Haiti has
really troubled them over the years. They are susceptible to hurricanes due to their geographic location. The island also sits upon a fault line that causes earthquakes. The primitive housing has little chance of survival during earthquakes. A third problem is that the mountains on the Dominican Republic side of the island tend to prevent the moisture rich air from the ocean from reaching Haiti.
Economy Typical Haitian Community KitchenThe Haitian economy is very
poor. Many people live on very little. The average Haitian makes around $2/day. It is not that the people do not want to work. It is just that there are very few jobs available due to the corruption that has plagued the country throughout its history. Most Haitian do not even have the opportunity to gain an education unless their family can afford to send them. Most families don’t even have indoor plumbing or electricity.
