Numbers - Counting To 10“Counting With My Friends”

Lesson Objective: Children will learn to count to ten with a song and movements.

Interactive Dialogue• Clap a pattern and have the children echo you. Vary the

number of claps in the pattern. After the children echo the pattern, repeat the pattern and count the number of claps.

• Explain to the children what an echo is and demonstrate with a word, short sentence, and/or clapping sequence.

• Ask one of the children to suggest the number of claps for a pattern. If you keep the pace moving, each child should have an opportunity to suggest a number.

• Using the set of large number pages 1-10, do a walk through of each number. Have the children hold up the correct number of fingers with each number.

• Hand out number necklaces from the Bridging Activity. Call out a number and ask the children to identify the child wearing that particular number necklace. Ask for volunteers to provide subsequent numbers, trying to engage all the children. With each number chosen, count as a group using the correct number of fingers.

• Using the Bridging Activity number flash cards, have the children color the numbers and use for further classroom discussion.

• Listen to the song Counting With My Friends and have the children observe as you do the movements.

• Invite the children to learn the song and movements. Walk the children through the movements in short segments. Have them repeat the movements as you say the words to the song.

• Play the song and have the children sing and do movements. Repeat.

1. Count to 10 with the children “alternating turns.” (i.e. you say “1” they say “2,” you say “3” they say “4.”)2. Play a variation of “Duck, Duck, Goose” but counting the children as you go around the circle. Have the 10th

child chase you around the group. Then that child will count heads with help from the group.3. Have the children find 10 red items around the room. Repeat with different colors or different items. 4. When at lunch or on recess break, have the children count out the items they have (i.e. raisins or rocks).
