A Reflection from Bringing Home the WordCountering Our Culture By Mary Katharine Deeley When my children were school age, my husband and I decided to use TV commercials as teaching tools. “What are they trying to sell you?” we’d ask. “How are they trying to get you to want it?” Their answers grew as they did: “They want you to think you’ll be cool.” “They’re showing you that rich people have this and hope you want to be like them.” I often learned as much as our children did, and I like to think that, as a result, we were a little less vulnerable to the techniques. A consumer culture like ours depends on making people want more and better than they have. To support it, manufacturers must convince us that this cereal is better than that, this present will fill the void we have experienced, or that our true happiness depends on a brand name, location, degree, or career. “Do not conform yourselves to this age,” Paul tells us in today’s reading from Romans. This age tells us we cannot be whole until we’ve achieved or obtained certain things. In reminding us that our goal is not to be formed with this age, St. Paul states, rather, it lies in changing our form with Christ—actually changing our mind and heart so we can know and love God ever more deeply. So rather than conforming, we are better off transforming. What does changing form look like for the Christian? It looks like loving the enemy, caring for those who have less, gathering at the eucharistic table, being good stewards of resources and, yes, taking up a cross and following Christ— even to death, if necessary. There we will find our joy and our freedom. † © © 2017 Liguori Publications, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO 63057. A Reflection from Bringing Home the Word…

Countering Our Culture By Mary Katharine Deeley

When my children were school age, my husband and I decided to use TV commercials as teaching tools. “What are they trying to sell you?” we’d ask. “How are they trying to get you to want it?” Their answers grew as they did: “They want you to think you’ll be cool.” “They’re showing you that rich people have this and hope you want to be like them.”

I often learned as much as our children did, and I like to think that, as a result, we were a little less vulnerable to the techniques.

ORANGE SHIRT DAY will be marked Saturday, September 30th across Canada. This day grew out of “Phyllis' story” of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of residential school. The orange shirt symbolizes all that was lost and the resilient spirit that remains. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools. This non-gathered event requires nothing more than to wear any orange shirt that you have on September 30th and look for opportunities to explain to people why. For more information, please call: Myron Rogal, Coordinator of the Office of Justice and Peace, 306-659-5841 or e-mail: [email protected]

SASKATOON CHURCH CURLING LEAGUE is looking for curlers to join us every Wednesday evening (October –March) at 8:45 pm at the Granite Curling Club for fun and fellowship. Join us as a regular or spare. Enter a team or come on your own and we will put you on a team. Please call Glade Penner, 306-955-1009 or email him at [email protected] for more information.

FROM MOURNING TO DAWN: The diocesan grief support group for widows and widowers is hosting their fall session, beginning on September 19th. This program is open to participants who have been widows/widowers between 2 months and 2 years. Sessions are held at the Catholic Pastoral Centre in the Cathedral of the Holy Family on 8 consecutive Tuesdays, beginning September 19th from 7:00-9:00 pm. The cost is $35. For more information or to register, please contact Elan at 306-679-7717 or email at [email protected].

OTHER NEWS

PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP Praise to you, Lord our God, our eternal shepherd and guide.

In your faithfulness, grant to the Diocese of Saskatoon a shepherd whose watchful care and kindly zeal will continue the good work of his predecessors.

In your love for us, give us a shepherd who will lead us in being Christ’s heart of mercy, voice of hope, and hands of justice.

May our new bishop fill our minds and hearts with the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments,

and the desire to build up your holy Church.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

PRAYER FOR THE HARVEST Heavenly Father, King of the Universe,

you are the sole source of abundance. We give thanks for the fruits of the field which

are now ready for harvest. We ask You now, in Your mercy, to bless the crops and

the farmers who harvest them. Preserve them, and keep them from all harm. We

pray this, in Jesus’ name. Amen

Need a laugh?:

Jesus was standing over the woman caught in adultery and

challenged the crowd that “He who is without sin, cast the first

stone.” Suddenly, a rock hit the back of his head. Jesus turned and

exclaimed, “Mom!”
