Writing – Instructor Information

Instructions for the Advisor:

A structured writing assignment is designed to enable difficult or dramatic events and/or

situations (e.g., conflict) to be processed. Through repeated confrontation with the event,

the impact of the emotions decreases. A form of habituation can occur, so it is important

that you learn to look at the situation with fresh eyes (cognitive restructuring) and maybe

challenge or ‘rescript’ some of your thinking. It is this reduction of emotions and the

different perspective on the situation/event which explains the impact or effectiveness of

the written assignments

This structured writing assignment is designed to help in the processing of difficult or

dramatic events/situations (e.g., conflict)

You may wish to use this assignment during meetings 3 to 7

In order to complete the assignment the client needs the written instructions and

directions

Summary of the procedure for the client’s written assignment:

This needs to be completed in a quiet space for up to half an hour, twice a

week

The client writes about what comes to his mind first

The process is completed by answering the same four questions (see the

form)

After working on the written assignment, the client should relax for 15 minutes
