Chaplain’s message Fr. Clint Ressler “Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one.” (1 Cor 9:25) On Super Bowl Sunday we all witness the combined results of literally years and years of training and sacrifice. We see players and coaches who have denied themselves many things to “receive a perishable wreath.” Our culture admires and sometimes even adores athletes and the amazing things we see them accomplish. Of course, this year the Texans are not in the Super Bowl and I, for one, am truly disappointed. I get to see first hand the level of sacrifice that these men make and its hard to see that effort come to an end short of the goal. As Christians preparing to enter the season of Lent, we can take a long look in the mirror—a 40 day look in the mirror, and ask ourselves quite honestly, “What level of sacrifice am I willing to make to achieve – with God’s grace – an ’imperishable crown’?” Are you willing to “exercise self-control in all things”? Where in your life have your priorities gotten out of whack? What areas of your life need to be brought back under control? Where do you need God’s grace to overcome the slavery that imprisons you? Lent is like a Spiritual and Moral “Spring Training” for Christian disciples. Let’s collect our ‘gear’ and prepare together for the ‘season’ ahead.

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE James Urbanovsky On behalf of the Brother Knights of our council, we graciously convey our congratulations to Brother Knight Father Clint Ressler, our Council Chaplain, in recognition of his devotion to vocations, service to the church, school, community, and the Knights of Columbus with the presentation by His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo of the “Outstanding Clergy of the Year” award, Friday, January 18, 2013, at the Annual Clergy Appreciation Night. His Eminence also presented an award to the members of Council 2917 in recognition of the donation of $500 to each of the 50 semi-narians, totaling $25,000, for the 2011-2012 school year. Diocesan Deputy Reggie Vasquez followed up with the promotion of the April 6 “Family Fun Day Festival” at the facilities and grounds of 2917. What a tremendous evening for Council 2917! With the “Family Fun Day Festival” just a couple of months away, there will be an elevated and intense focus on organizing the needs for the success of this event. As was noted in last month’s newsletter, the council, in addition to having control of the grounds and facilities, will have all the beer concessions, so there is a need for a large number of our members to step forward and help. Parking cars, working in the information and ID wristband booths will not require TABC certification. However, people selling and serving the alcoholic beverages must be certified. To satisfy this requirement the council will have and pay the fee for a TABC certification class to be held in Odin Hall on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at 6:30 pm. Please contact Brother Bennie Bronikowski at 713-560-6334 to enroll. There still remain unsold raffle and “Grilled Steak” dinner tickets assigned to our council, so we ask that you contact the Grand Knight at 713-861-6347 to help sell or purchase the tickets. We are still collecting donated silent auction items. Finally, I want to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for volunteering to handle the “Cake Raffle” booth and CDA Christ the King Court #1750 for the “Dessert” booth. Please continue to support and promote this festival with your talents and resources. The proceeds, after expenses, are earmarked for a very worthy project, a sonogram machine for a Catholic Clinic in Houston, with the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus matching the funds that this festival will raise toward this purchase.

Greg Okonski, Knight of the month for December. Ron & Judy Wendt, Family of the month for December.

Please welcome Brother Simon Kipiti, one of our seminarians, into our council family. Brother Simon was exemplified into the First Degree on January 21.

Brother Oscar Montemayor, Jr., was recently exemplified into the First, Second, and Third Degree having achieved full knighthood the same day recently at St. Basil Knights of Columbus Council 4204 in Sugar Land and became a member of Council 2917. Your Council 2917 Brother Knights welcome you in joining our council and look forward to your participation with us.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY Benny Okruhlik Bills for all members’ dues were mailed on December 26, 2012. Many members have already returned and remitted these dues. The second reminder will be mailed to all who have not paid before February 15th. If you are one of the members who have yet to act, please consider mailing your dues today. You will save your council the extra postage and, more important, you will save your officers a lot of extra work. Your trustees will be performing the semi-annual audit of books of the Financial Secretary and Treasurer at the end of January. The results will be announced at a regular membership meeting and published in the newsletter following the completion of the audit. The Supreme Council, State Council and your officers are very reluctant to suspend members for non payment of dues. Several of our members have been notified and questioned if they are in need of help. The Knights of Columbus is there for you when you are in genuine need. Such requests are investigated to protect your council. If you have been a recipient of one of these notices, consider some resolution before your officers have to act on your suspension.

Brendan Cahill, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Vincent Rizzotto, Bishop George Scheltz, Past CDA Director Duchess Collins and State Deputy Jim Collins, His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Supreme Director Javier Martinez and his lovely wife, and Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Fiorenza.

The members of Knights of Columbus Council 2917 were recognized with an award from His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo for the generous donation of $500 to each of the fifty seminarians, the amount totaling $25,000 for the 2011-2012 school year, at the Archdiocesan Knights of Columbus Chapter Clergy Appreciation Night, Friday, January 18, 2013, in Stafford, Texas. Pictured is GK James Urbanovsky accepting the award from His Eminence.

Council 2917 Chaplain Fr. Clint Ressler accepts the "Outstanding Clergy of the Year" award and a $200 check from GK James Urbanovsky. Fr. Clint was unable to attend the Clergy Appreciation Night due to a previous commitment and in his absence St. Rose of Lima Seminarian Jesse Garcia accepted the award and check for Fr. Clint from His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo.

Pictured are Worthy Advocate Don Psencik and his lovely wife JoAnn presenting a donation of $2,000 to Council 2917 GK James Urbanovsky for use toward the purchase and installation of an Automated External Defibrillator(AED) in Odin Hall. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. Thank you Brother Don and JoAnn for your generous gift.

BINGO UPDATE Benny Okruhlik Members were given the opportunity to sign up to work bingo at the January 14th meeting. If you are interested in working bingo, please call Benny Okruhlik at 281-353-5892. A worker must obtain a DPS clearance from the Lottery Commission before working Bingo. We have the application forms for this purpose. The Commission will issue a name badge upon clearance by the DPS. You do not have to work every week. You can choose which and how many weeks a month you wish to help. You can call Benny if you have further questions. Here are a few facts from the summary of K of C 2917 Bingo Operations for 2012. Bingo is not a one time event each year. Instead, it consisted of 52 weekly occasions during 2012. When combined for the 52 weeks, it is about the largest fund raiser that Bishop Odin Council 2917 has each year. Bingo paid the NorthSide Columbus Club a total of $30,600.00 in rent during 2012. The event purchases approximately $10,000.00 worth of paper cards, etc. just to be able to play the games. Each volunteer is offered a $10.00 stipend each week for coming to help work bingo for a total cost of over $8,000.00. Your Bingo account purchased a new monitor camera and four new additional monitors at a cost of over $1,500.00.

In spite of all of these costs, your Bingo account made charitable contributions totaling over $17,000.00 to the State Knights of Columbus Charities, Assumption Food Pantry, St. Rose of Lima Food Pantry, Dominican Sisters and others. While we play bingo each week, our Ladies Auxiliary operates the kitchen. Our ladies distributed the kitchen profits as charitable contributions totaling $9,000.00 to several organizations of religious sisters within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. It should be noted that Bingo operated 52 sessions of games during 2012. Our summary indicates that the same twelve to eighteen people volunteer to work bingo every week. The number does not include the three or four ladies that work the kitchen. Volunteers for the kitchen are limited to the same four to eight ladies. You are asked to show your appreciation and thank all these volunteers. Bingo volunteers for December were Ken Boudny, Joe Campise, Augustin Carillo, Lydia Clifton, Frank Culver, Zygmont Jankowski, Vincent Lima, Jose Limas, Maxie Mendoza, Miguel Navarro, Nicholas Navarro, FS Benny Okruhlik (Operator), Pete Palasota, Don Psencik, Floyd Rekieta, Sandra Rekieta, Tony Saenz (Chairman & Operator), Bill Selvaggi, Delores Tobola and Grand Knight, James Urbanovsky.

The visitation schedule for 2013 is: Feb. 17, Apr. 28, July 7, Sept. 15, Nov. 24. Please contact Anton Swiech, our VA Chairman, at 713-697-6846 if you are able to visit.

Brother Knights John Dziedzic, Gus Sivcoski, and Felix Sivcoski, all members of Council 2917, volunteer for V.A. Burial detail. They have assisted in this vocation for the past 13 years, paying final respect to 664 deserving veterans. They each have over 1300 hours performing this service, a total of almost 4,000 service hours. The ceremonial detail they performed amounts to 13,097 hours over a period of 263 days for 654 funerals. The ceremonial detail, in addition to these 3 men, may include 8 or more men. They have a bugler, narrator, 2 flag folders, 3-4 men for the gun salute. When you add the hours for all these men, it comes to 13,097 for the past year. If we could all come close to matching what these 3 men do, imagine what we at 2917 could accomplish!

Council 2917 donated an overhead projector and screen to the Vietnamese Dominican Sisters and were invited to attend their Christmas Party. Those in attendance were: Deputy Grand Knight Chad Horelica, Financial Secretary Benny Okruhlik and his lovely wife Earline, Trustee Jim Descant, and NorthSide Columbus President John Buck. The lunch time meal began with 100 Sisters entering the room singing in Vietnamese and English. After all the Sisters were present, The Mother Superior, Sister Maria Goretti, greeted everyone in attendance including members of the Serra Club. After Sister Maria made introductions of all the guests to the 100 nuns, a prayer of thanks was said and lunch was served. After the meal, Sister Maria Goretti showed appreciation by presenting each organization in attendance with a framed picture of the Sisters of the Convent. The program ended with the Sisters once again singing and then they presented everyone with a box of homemade cookies.

NORTHSIDE COLUMBUS CLUB John Buck, President Thanks to all the workers this past month. Many of these workers are steady volunteer workers, weekend and weekday. If you would like to join this group, we have a job available for you—skilled or not, just the desire to assist on the improvements of your KC home. These workers receive no pay, other than coffee and donuts in the morning, lunch at noon, and a thank you from those that cannot come out and participate. With the Family Fun Day on April 6th soon approaching us, we have many chores to do to make our home shine. If you have the time to help, weekend or weekday, contact me at 713-398-6196. We have two very generous men to thank—Steve McClintock and Kerry von Arb. Steve donated another professional paint job on the grounds. He has not com-pleted the painting yet, but it will be done by next month. We had a leak in the roof of the walkway from the Roemer Hall to the parking lot. At first, 2917 was supposed to make the lumber repairs that needed to be done before Kerry von Arb made the roofing repair. After meeting with Kerry, he decided to do the whole job, lumber repairs and roofing repairs—material and labor—at no charge to the council. Guys, we are truly blessed and thankful to have you involved in our council. Thank you! Thank you to the following Brother Knights and Lovely Ladies that came out to work on Jan. 19: Mike Goins, James Urbanovsky, John Buck, Bennie Bronikowski, Ben Kaminski, Leo Landry, Ed Okonski, Augustin Carrillo, Joe Campise, Robert Miller, Ron Wendt, John Klessel, Greg Okonski, Sam Okonski, Nick Navarro, Charles Heinrich, George Stokan, Floyd Rekieta, Joe Earthman, Don Christen, Dennis Roeder, Lydia Clifton, Judy Wendt and Mickie Wendt. These were the people that signed in. I apologize if I missed anyone. Thank you all for your hard work!

Painters from McClintock Corp. paint the sidewalk cover from Roemer Hall to the BBQ Pit, Booth Cover posts, entrance side of Roemer Hall, and prepare to paint the inside of the outside restroom in preparation for the Archdiocesan Chapter Family Fun Day Festival scheduled for Saturday, April 6, 2013. Our heartfelt thanks to Steve McClintock for this donation of all the labor and paint not only for this project but also for his many other donations of painting projects at our facilities.

Brother Don Christen presents a check to Fr. Clint Ressler in the amount of $200 and GK James Urbanovsky presents one to Fr. Albert Zanatta sponsoring both in the "running” in the Archdiocesan 5K Run Steps for Students slated for Saturday, February 2, 2013 from the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Fr. Albert's goal this year is to raise $25,000 for Assumption School and Fr. Clint's personal goal is to raise $20,000 for St. Rose of Lima School and the school's total goal is $50,000. Good Luck Fr. Albert and Fr. Clint for a successful 5K Run benefitting your respective schools!

Pictured holding a plaque given to the council from the Marines in appreciation for a successful Toys for Tots event are some of the members that helped with organizing the Toys for Tots BBQ Cookoff and Dance that was held on Nov. 30th & Dec. 1st. From left to right are: Greg Okonski, Ed Okonski and John Buck. Not pictured are David Willgus, Sam Okonski and Larry Tobias. This year's event was the best turnout we had since the Cookoff started about 12 years ago. There were 36 cooking teams that came out to compete for the Master Chef award. There was a great crowd at the dance with a little over 300 people that filled Roemer Hall listening and dancing to music by the Telstars band. The Marines were in attendance as well collecting the toys and there was an abundance of toys this year. We had many compliments on what a great event this is. We see a lot of familiar faces each year along with some new ones and of course many of our council members also participate in the cookoff. It was also great to see 6 cooking teams from Chappell Hill join us this year. We hope to see you all again next year. Check out the website for pictures.

LADIES' AUXILIARY Delores Tobola Happy Valentine's Day. The February board meeting will be on February 20 at 6:15 P.M. and the regular meeting will be on February 20 at 7:00 P.M. Dues are now due for 2013. You must pay your dues by March 31 to be considered a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Dues are $10.00 and can be paid at the meeting or you can mail them to Sandra Rekieta at 3435 Keygate Drive, Spring, Tx 77388. Heads up to all auxiliary members, wives or friends of all K.C. members. On Saturday, April 6, the K.C. Galveston-Houston Chapter will have a Knights for Life Family Fun Day here at 2917. Proceeds from this festival will go towards the purchase of an ultrasound machine. An ultrasound enables an expectant mother to see her developing child, hear the baby’s heartbeat, and recognize the miracle of the new life within her. The Ladies' Auxiliary will be in charge of the cake walk booth. That means—we will need lots of homemade baked goodies: cakes, brownies, cup-cakes, pies, cookies, etc. NO STORE BOUGHT. We will also need workers, so if you can help out for an hour or two, it will be greatly appreciated. Also, I have raffle tickets if you would like to take a chance: Prizes are $5000.00 - 1st prize Visa Gift Card, $2000.00 - 2nd prize, $1000.00 - 3rd & 4th, $500.00 - 5th & 6th all Visa Gift Cards. They are $5.00 each, or a book of 5 for $20.00. If interested, please call me at 218-350-2773 and I will arrange to get them to you. Ladies, I know some of you do not bake or no longer drive. However, if you would still be willing to support this worthy cause, we are accepting monetary donations. We have people who are willing to bake in your place. You can send your donations to Sandra Rekieta at the address above. Please note on your donation that it is for the cake booth. Your donation will be greatly appreciated. Fr. Albert Zanatta will run in the 5K "Steps for Students" on Feb. 2, 2013. The Ladies Auxiliary was happy to make a $100.00 donation to support Fr. Albert's goal and for the support of his school. We want to extend our sympathy to Angie Heinrich on the death of her sister, Sister Emely Bolocerek. Also, want to send get well wishes to Elizabeth Busa. Let's keep all our members and their families in our prayers. Also, bless the troops and their families that cannot be together at this time. Workers in the kitchen for December were: Mickie Wendt, Judy Wendt, Pat Lahrman, Earline Okruhlik, Janie Okonski, Dorothy Urbanovsky, Delores Tobola, Kathy Bronikowski, Theresa Burkett, Pete Rodriguez. FOURTH DEGREE NEWS

With the 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, January was a very busy month for the Fourth Degree Sir Knights of our assembly. We want to express our appreciation particularly to those Sir Knights who served “double duty” by exhibit-ing the “visible arm of the Order” with the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants at the Catholic Charismatic Center the morning of January 19th and serving as the honor guard to His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo at the Annual Respect Life Mass in the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart the afternoon of the same day. Your service for the “Dignity of Life” in the Archdiocese is extraordinaire. Our Lord called another Sir Knight to his eternal rest on January 13, 2013, SK Alex Hernandez. Please pray for the repose of his soul and for comfort to the family. Following the tradition of the Fourth Degree, Sir Knight Hernandez’s family will receive an engraved Chalice to be placed with a Priest, Church, Mission or Missionary for use in the Sacrifice of the Mass with the intention of remembering Sir Knight Alex whenever the Chalice is used. I am honored and delighted to accompany 2 Council 2917 Third Degree Brother Knights to the Fourth Degree exemplification in Winnie, Saturday, February 9, 2013. It is always exciting to see Third Degree Brother Knights journey to achieve the highest Degree of the Order. Should you have any interest in joining our Fourth Degree Sir Knights, let me know and I will be happy to discuss the opportunities and duties of the Patriotic Degree. James Urbanovsky, PFN Msgr. George A. Wilhelm Assembly -The Fourth Degree
