Young President, Texas A&M University CBE Recommendation: Approval of Spirit Plaza Details In accordance with presidential action dated March 16, 2018, the concept for Spirit Plaza was approved, but the details as presented were not recommended for approval due to outstanding concerns. The Class of '69 worked with the CBE, the Design Review sub-council Chair, and the Director of Division Communications for the Division of Finance and Operations to address the noted concerns, finalization of text, and refinement of details. Funding for this project now involves four classes: '69, '72 , ' 91 , and '95. The proposed concept to make this area into a plaza to honor the Silver Taps and Muster traditions and create a home for the existing stat ues remains the same. Hi storical markers (similar to ones on Military Walk) will describe the Silver Taps and Muster traditions. The hi storical markers will be approximately 42 inches in height and 8 feet in length to match the size of those along Military Walk. This is in alignment with the Campus Master Plan guidelines for keeping an open space and maintaining view corridors. A portion of the materials for the historical markers will be granite from the same quarry as those on Military Walk. Sunset Red (matches Military Walk) will be utilized for the top and Keystone Blue will be utilized for the base as well as the text inset. The existing Silver Taps and Muster bronze sculptures would be relocated to this area and placed on pedestals adjacent to the corresponding hi storical markers. Cast stone cap and brick wrapped seat walls (consistent with campus standard style) will be added to line the existing flower beds on each end of the plaza. The new design increases the amount of green space for new landscape in the middle area ofthe plaza by about 20% on each side. This inclusion allows for a 26' wide fire lane I emergency vehicle access through the center of the plaza. The entire plaza surface is proposed to be comprised of brick pavers to match those of Military Walk. On the right side of the plaza (facing the Academic Building) closest to Military Walk is the Silver Taps historical marker and sculpture. The marker tells the story of Silver Taps , including a timeline depicting the day 's event. The new pedestal for the sculpture will be designed to be at a low level so they can be viewed and read per the original intention of the sculptor. Directly across from that will be the Spirit Plaza marker. Directly across from that will be the marker with a bronze reproduction of the Donald Coward lette r. Since the year 2000, the letter has been read to incoming freshman during Fish Camp to explain the Silver Taps Tradition. Two green benches (matching ones on Military Walk) will be placed on either side ofthe marker. The marker will be approximately 42 inches in height and 4 feet in length. A small donor plaque will be located on the front face of the marker. Jack K. Williams Administration Building Suite 100 1248 TAMU College Station. CBE Recommendation: Approval of Spirit Plaza Details

In accordance with presidential action dated March 16, 2018, the concept for Spirit Plaza was approved, but the details as presented were not recommended for approval due to outstanding concerns. The Class of ' 69 worked with the CBE, the Design Review sub-council Chair, and the Director of Division Communications for the Division of Finance and Operations to address the noted concerns, finalization of text, and refinement of details. Funding for this project now involves four classes: ' 69, '72, ' 91 , and ' 95 .

The proposed concept to make this area into a plaza to honor the Silver Taps and Muster traditions and create a home for the existing statues remains the same. Historical markers (similar to ones on Military Walk) will describe the Silver Taps and Muster traditions. Sunset Red (matches Military Walk) will be utili zed for the top and Keystone Blue will be utilized for the base as well as the text inset. The existing Silver Taps and Muster bronze sculptures would be relocated to this area and placed on pedestals adjacent to the corresponding historical markers.

Cast stone cap and brick wrapped seat walls (consistent with campus standard style) will be added to line the exi sting flower beds on each end of the plaza. The new design increases the amount of green space for new landscape in the middle area ofthe plaza by about 20% on each side. This inclusion allows for a 26 ' wide fire lane I emergency vehicle access through the center of the plaza. The entire plaza surface is proposed to be comprised of brick pavers to match those of Military Walk.

On the right side of the plaza (facing the Academic Building) closest to Military Walk is the Silver Taps historical marker and sculpture. The marker tells the story of Silver Taps, including a timeline depicting the day 's event. The new pedestal for the sculpture will be designed to be at a low level so they can be viewed and read per the original intention of the sculptor. Directly across from that will be the Spirit Plaza marker. Directly across from that will be the marker with a bronze reproduction of the Donald Coward letter. Since the year 2000, the letter has been read to incoming freshman during Fish Camp to explain the Silver Taps Tradition . Two green benches (matching ones on Military Walk) will be placed on either side ofthe marker. The marker will be approximately 42 inches in height and 4 feet in length. A small donor plaque will be located on the front face of the marker.
