Council Communiqué
Over the past several years, there has
been a gradual decline in the regular
attendance at our monthly Julliard
School Council meetings.
To that end, last month Council held
its first-ever School Council Meet &
Greet on Tuesday March 25th that
encouraged parents to, not only
attend, but to do so in an informal
and social setting. The usual formal
was dispensed in favour of an array of
food and beverages as well as a
stand and chat start that allowed
parents to engage with each other
and mingle before the agenda of the
meeting actually began.
During the "formal" part of the meeting
parents watched a video on social
media and it's impacts were discussed
by Vice Principal, Anita McQuarrie.
Also, Council Chair Audrey Wega
presented the Budget and explained
to the assembled parents how the
funds that were generated throughout
the year were allocated. Following
this, the staff representatives, Claire
Levy-Freedman (principal) and Anita
ArciMartello (staff rep) also made their
reports. The meeting concluded with
a very lively small group activity ---
Stop, Start, Continue --- that allowed
parents input into what they felt were
valuable facets in the school.
We look forward to more active
parent participation in our school
community in the future. Comments
from the meeting can be found on P2!

The questions that parents were asked at the end of
the meeting were
How did they feel that the meeting went?
Did they feel that it was productive in promoting
their understanding of the Julliard school
community?
Did they feel that parents were engaged in the
process?

I thought the meeting went well, there were a lot of good ideas
and my hope is that together, both existing parents as well as
the new parents that made the suggestions, can bring the
ideas to life. I think adding a small social aspect to the
meetings would generate more interest in being a part of
council on a regular basis. Jacqueline R.
We were both thrilled at the turnout to our last Council “Meet
and Greet”. There was an opportunity to introduce some new
families into the mix and to get some valuable feedback from
parents. It is important to have as many voices from our parent
community as possible when we are planning events and when
deciding on how we may support the students at Julliard. From
an Adminstrator’s perspective, we enjoyed sharing with
everyone some of the great things that have been happening
around our school and in the classrooms. Our discussion on
social media also elicited a number of comments and
responses from parents which we appreciated. We look
forward to seeing everyone again at April’s meeting and
perhaps a few more! Claire L-F & Anita M. (Principal & VP)
The following comments were made by parents who attended
but did not submit their names ...
Tonight's meeting went very well and parents were engaged. It
was a great opportunity to meet other parents and be involved
in the school.
(The) meeting was awesome and very productive and (I) felt
that everybody was fully into it. I would like to attend again.
Meet & Greet was a good idea.
This is my first time coming in. I think inviting (through the) Meet
& Greet was (an) informal way of inviting rather than
intimidating. It was great (and) lots of information about the
school was shared. I am looking forward to continue coming.
Thank you!
I am very happy to have come. It was very informative and
engaging with the parents. I now understand where all the
funds go and am very happy with the Council's choices.
I think the Council is effective and inviting, but I have been lazy
about participating. (I) will change and become more active.
(This was) a good way to engage parents in the process of
planning at Julliard's Parent Council.
Meeting went very well. I feel I understand the importance of
being part of the school more.

The Questions
The March School Council meeting was advertised as a MEET & GREET night. This was an informal opportunity for
parents to come out and meet fellow Julliard parents and to engage in conversation about our school community
and where we want to see it going.
Here is some of the feedback from that evening.
I enjoyed the Meet & Greet. It was vey informative and
I'm glad I came. It definitely made me want to attend
more meetings in the future to keep up to date with
school happenings. Zoe S.
Being the first time for me, the meeting was very
informative and thought-provoking. This was very
productive and (I) will be here next time. Thank you and
keep up the good work! Rajesa K.
Loved learning about what the School Council does. The
Start/Stop/Continue was very engaging. The meeting
helped (me) to meet other parents. Priya J.
The Meet & Greet was a great opportunity to get a
glimpse of what's going on and reinforce how important
parent involvement is. Our group was very engaged in
discussions around what's working and what's not.
Angelica
I think that it appears to be a success tonight. New face
and (it was) nice meeting people. Actually, (it was the)
most relaxed night in ages --- great welcome event.
Josephine
Meeting went very well --- I believe you did an amazing
job in attracting more parents in attending Council.
Thanks so much. Carla A.
I felt that this meeting went really well. I am very happy
that I attend(ed) this meeting. This is my very first time
(that) I am attending this meeting. P. Punita
The meeting was a great success and (a) lovely evening
in that there were many parents attending and excited to
share ideas. Our Julliard community is diverse and brings
to the school a cultural richness that is very special.
Everyone was interested in a common goal of creating
and nurturing a positive school and community spirit.

On Saturday February 22nd, 2014, we had our 7th
annual Julliard Family Skate Night and it was a
BIG success!
Students, teachers and their families came out to
enjoy a wonderful winter activity and at the same
time support a good cause. Students and clubs
(with teacher assistance) sold bracelets, baked
goods and water to name a few items to raise
funds for our charity this year, the Mully Children's
Family Charitable Foundation, a foundation that
helps school children in Kenya.
Family skate night is one of Julliard’s most popular
events, with everyone that comes leaving with a big
smile and a lovely sense of community spirit. School
Council is proud to host this event annually with the
help of parent volunteers on and off the ice.
However, we must give two special ladies from
Julliard School Council extra recognition, for their
dedication and organization for making this event
happen. Christine Gomes and Elsa Strano have
been coordinating this event for the past five years
and once again made Julliard Family Skate Night
2014 a night to remember.
