Issue introductionWelcome to 2070.

As you all know our world is rapidly changing. Over the last 50 years there have been major developments in multiple areas of our daily lives. We have seen massive economic growth and decline; we have seen territorial fights and new alliances being formed. As the Earth was rapidly changing so were the countries inhabiting the Earth. In 2020 the Earth consisted of 206 countries, whereas it now consists of 17 countries. There were drastically different ways in which the nations were formed, some by democratic agreements, others through the use of sheer force. Now that we have a new world order there are other pressing issues at hand.

Today, January the 1st 2070 we stand on the edge of a major energy crisis. With the global oil supply running dry, and the only country still having oil being the Islamic State, worries are justified.

Humanity used around 7,24 x 1020 Joules of energy in 2069. The estimate production for 2070 is 2,49 x1019 Joules. Because of this we can assume that by the end of the month we will run out. This incredible lack of energy is mainly caused by global ignorance regarding the crisis as many countries thought their economies more important than the future. Now that 2069 is over and future production is insufficient, we will finally run out of energy; we have no other option than to face the consequences.

Islamic State is the only country to have any kind of oil left on Earth. However, they have already stated that since a large portion of their economy thrives on this oil they are not willing to share.

There are countries that have taken the necessary measures to prevent this problem. The Scandinavian Democracy has used the fjords on the west side of their country to generate electricity; they do this by using the tides. Over the course of 10-15 years the Scandinavian Democracy has placed large stations that allow water to flow through after pushing against large pedals that in turn use generators to create electricity. By doing this they create enough electricity for themselves and have something to spare, however, this is by far not enough for the entire world.

Furthermore, the Saharan District has used the Sahara to their advantage. Using the extreme heat and amount of sunshine, they have placed large numbers of solar panels. In addition, they have been using the sun to boil water in high-pressure tanks whereby the pressure caused by the steam creates more energy. This option is a lot easier and cheaper, however, the conditions necessary are a lot more limited.

Despite these two examples we are still nowhere near producing the energy necessary to survive. If this crisis is not averted fast, we will be in major trouble, but even now the consequences of our ignorance are critical. Transportation has come to a near halt, as petroleum and kerosene are nowhere to be found.

History of the New World Order

It is the year 2037. International tensions have reached a critical point; World War III seems almost unavoidable. Then without warning the Chinese military invades its neighbouring countries. Myanmar is the first to fall quickly followed by Bangladesh; India holds on the longest but must eventually give in to the overwhelming military power of China. The entire invasion takes less than 9 months.

In a defensive move against the upcoming superpower several countries unite themselves forming the Southern Islands. Since they are now prepared, the countries together prove too great a force for China (now called the Chinese Empire). Since the problems outweigh the reward, the Chinese Empire leave them alone, for now.

Seeing the invasion by China as a starting sign, Russia starts to invade several countries in an attempt to reclaim its former glory when it formed the Soviet Union. In reaction to this the members of the European Union decide that a simple alliance is no longer enough and unite themselves under one flag as one country; the Central Powers. In the ensuing chaos several other countries conquer, unite or surrender to the now unstoppable world powers in an attempt to survive. Maps have to be redrawn and the situation is now called The New World Order.

Despite the large-scale changes most of the world settles down in 2051 and people adjust to their new lives under their new leaders. Alliances are rebuilt and wars end. However, some tensions remain, especially between the major world powers: the North-American Union and Central Powers on the one end, Communist Republic and Chinese Empire on the other. Tensions rise and Africa becomes the battleground where both sides support two countries (the Ticoast Empire and the Congo State) whom are at war; Both sides battle out their differences without being directly involved. This is still going on today.

As of right now most countries have formed their alliances and made their enemies. One thing is for certain; the world has forever changed and will never be the same as it once was.

Technological advancements

Lab meat

Scientists have found a way to artificially grow muscle tissue. This is relatively cheaper to produce than traditional meat, when looking at the negative side effects. This ‘meat’ is less nutritious than traditional meat and therefore one needs to eat more of this meat. It takes 18 months to fully grow a steak-sized piece of meat.

Plant Plastics

The last mentionable invention made before 2070 was a new production process of plastic. This process is based on cellulose, a by plants produced substance that is able to form plastic, without the need for oil. This would be a lengthy process and would have a lot of steps. This would be an alternative for oil-based plastics.

Nuclear Fusion

Nuclear fusion is possible, however, it is very dangerous as it is still in the testing fase, it is labour intensive, very expensive and above all very difficult to produce (safely). When done successfully, nuclear fusion can yield incredible amounts of energy. When done improperly, the amount of uncontrollable energy would be able to wipe out tens of thousands of km2. To use a nuclear fusion reactor safely the workers need to be highly skilled, well educated and very precise. The schooling of such a labour force would take years to set up and execute properly.

Booming business

In the Islamic State, scientists have found a way to make a semi-stable form of the element Francium. This alkali metal is a highly reactive metal that when coming into contact with water has the same explosive value of 1 million times that of TNT. This means that 1 gram of Francium would have the same energy release as 1052kg TNT. The Francium element has a life span of 19 hours before falling apart into Iron, Copper and Germanium.

Global Population reaches 8 billionNereo Iadanza, born in Italy, is the 8 billionth human on Earth. His birth was largely celebrated by family and friends who until 20 hours later were unaware of the special status that their child had. His mother, Giuditta Iadanza, commented that despite this his upbringing will be “just like any other kid”. It took 13 years to go from 7 to 8 billion and birth rates are increasing especially in countries such as India. The global population is estimated to reach 9 billion by 2042.

China invades Southern neighboursIn a twisted turn of events China has invaded India. The Chinese government have completely shut off all communications with the outside world and seem hell-bent on a quick victory. Shocking to see are Chinese nuclear silos opened and apparently aimed at India. So far no nuclear weapons have been used, however, the Chinese government apparently is not averse to using them should the need arise. Several countries have reacted in outrage at this and demand an immediate retreat, America is readying its military and so is Russia. Yet, Russia has been awfully silent about the whole event, actions speak more than words apparently.

Climate Summit cancelled for the 9th timeThe climate summit that was supposed to happen in Lagos has been cancelled for the 9th time in a row. Despite the fact that certain climate issues are starting to become more and more urgent, several governments simply do not see or want to see the upcoming problems. Following the destruction that World War III brought upon the world, the already daunting task of reducing carbon emissions became near impossible. Yet there was hope when the African Union took it upon themselves to bring all the world leaders together and discuss these issues. Yet after the first successful summit in 2048 no summit followed leaving the people of the world wondering what the future will hold.

UN back?!What was deemed impossible has just happened. World leaders have agreed to come together in Lagos and discuss the global issues at hand. Such a large-scale collaboration hasn’t been seen since 2034, being the last United Nations conference. The news was received with great enthusiasm around the world. World leaders will form a new commission that will be named The Future Council. The Future Council is a bright point in the dark years that have passed. If all goes according to plan the chance of a peaceful and prosperous future is within reach.

Origin StoryThe African Union existed prior to the New World Order. However, just like the European Union, the African Union was rather an alliance than an actual country. After the start of the New World Order several member states thought it would be wise if they too united themselves to protect themselves and further strengthen their bond. They are now widely seen as the diplomatic centre of the world where many alliances have been signed. The African Union is a relatively well-developed country, which thrives on establishing diplomatic relations.

Origin StoryObsessed with the former glory of the British Empire, King George decided that because the world was in chaos already it was the perfect time to attempt to restore such glory. The entire British fleet followed the old maritime route towards the east. Underway they conquered the South of Africa. However, when they reached the Southern Islands they soon realised that conquering them simply was not worth the reward; so they took New Zealand and went back home. Australia was asked to join the Southern Islands. However, they soon realised that aid from the British Empire was of much greater value faced with the large communist world powers looming over their head. They agreed to become a part of the British Empire with the right to some minor autonomous decisions. The British Empire is now a large monarchy, which thrives on the large money supplies going around the world. The British Empire and especially the British Isles are widely considered to be one of the largest service providers around the world, especially when it comes to the large sums of money that go around the globe.

Communism was reintroduced and within a year nearly everything was state owned. Right now every citizen of the Communist Republic owns the same amount of money and their profession is chosen by the state via a nationwide test taken by inhabitants at the age of 18. The Communist Republic is one of the largest military powers and a public supporter of the Ticoast Empire. Striving for ultimate equality following the beliefs of Karl Marx, the Communist Republic remains a key player for the Communist side of The New World Order.

Prompted by the on going wars in the east, countries quickly joined in this initiative. Nowadays Equatorian State works closely together with their southern neighbours. Origin StoryFacing defeat, the invasion of China was a golden opportunity for the caliphate Islamic State. While every country was fighting each other or fighting amongst themselves, they were given free reign; silently they took over several countries and by the time the major world powers realised what was happening, it was far too late. Islamic State had claimed land for themselves and there was very little that could be done without entering into a full blown war again which the already weakened countries could not risk. Right now Islamic State is a strong power being the only country that still has oil. However, they also realise that the major world powers have recovered from their wounds and are now eagerly looking towards the oil supply of the still somewhat unstable Islamic State. This places them in a precarious situation where they are the only ones with a certain resource but are barely able to defend such a resource.

Origin StoryAs the start of war approached, no one paid attention to what the DPRK was doing. As the USA was busy joining forces with Canada and focused their attention on China and Russia, they were too busy to help South Korea fend off the attacks from the DPRK. After the DPRK took control over South Korea, Japan was soon to follow. This took place over only three months and when the major powers realised what was happening, it was far too late. Today the Korean Republic is allies with the Chines Empire and the Communist Republic and stands strong among the other countries surrounding it. The Korean Republic’s goal is to increase its overall power.

Origin StoryLooking with increasing concern at the large communistic powers, the USA was the first to take the initiative. They amalgamated power with Canada and traded Greenland for military support with the Scandinavian Democracy once such an opportunity arose. Now they are the largest threat to the communistic regimes and most likely the only thing that keeps them at bay. The North-American Union is about the largest food supplier. Especially with regard to maple syrup which, as a result of its long shelf life and high sugar content, is a much-needed product in the countries that do not have a lot of food. They are also the largest military power, for now.

Origin StoryStarted by Ottoman Empire fanatic Recep Erdogan, a widespread belief arose in Turkey that they had been robbed of their former territories. Thus, when the Chinese invasion started, Turkey invaded on a large scale. Wholly unprepared, the other countries put up little resistance. As of right now the Ottoman Empire is a widespread empire reigned over solely by a Sultan. They are the general trade centre where countries that do not get along but need the products of one another, trade. The Ottoman Empire receives and delivers goods in exchange for a small portion of those goods and works closely together with British Empire both because of the large money flows that surround the Ottoman Empire and because of their shared beliefs in former glory.

Origin StoryAs the world turned to chaos the most logical step was to unite forces with the neighbouring countries. This process proceeded very peacefully. As the Scandinavian countries did not have any enemies before the war, they do not have any enemies now. They are friendly with everyone and have focussed on new and renewable forms of energy, a new way of disposing of trash and much more. The Scandinavian Democracy is focussed on the future and making sure the Earth is still around for future generations.

Origin StorySeeing their neighbouring countries being conquered, the Southern Islands united politically; especially where military bases were involved. This succeeded as they proved to be too hard to conquer considering what the lands had to offer. The Chinese Empire is still knocking on their door but the threat of them actually coming in has been reduced to acceptable levels. Large amounts of textile are produced and sold to the Chinese Empire. However, the Chinese Empire is using the threat of military action to bring the price of textile down. As a consequence, the Southern Islands are barely hanging on. Furthermore, they are not allowed to trade with anyone besides the Chinese Empire. Despite the Southern Islands still standing, they are under heavy pressure from their much stronger northern neighbour.
