Change….Change is not easy and often not fun! One of my favorite books is

“Change Is Good – You Go First”. Change is necessary for any of us to grow!

You will see some changes in the next few months. I consider Berny Unruh a

mentor and friend. However, we have different styles and probably some differing

focus. This doesn’t make either of us right or wrong – just different!

For those who haven’t had a chance to get to know me yet, I’ll provide a brief

update. I spent 20 years in banking (most of them in Barton County) and was

involved in a variety of community activities during that time. My husband of 30

years and I ranch with his family in NE Barton County where we have raised two

kids (who were Eureka Homesteaders!). Our son is an archaeologist and, after 5

summers of international archaeological digs, is pursuing a graduate degree in

Cultural Resource Management. Our daughter is a free-lance Ag. Journalist and

handles advertising, social media, and public relations for the ranch.

Our kids and I are all K-State alumni and are counting the days to the first home

football game. We have the neat opportunity to meet my parents and my sisters

with their families at each game.

I grew up in 4-H in Doniphan County and was involved in sewing, home

improvement, photography, crochet, and sheep. For the record, I was terrible at

showing sheep! 4-H took me to Clovia 4-H Leadership House at K-State where I met

some of my dearest friends and a couple of them are from Barton County!

I have spent the last three years in the Midway District (Russell and Ellsworth

Counties) and I am excited to be close to home with the opportunity to make an

impact on the youth here!

Life is a Grand Adventure – Make every day count!

All State Fair entries (except livestock) must be

Fair and will need to enter it with your other

projects!

If you are interested in Photography Judging and

exhibited photography at the county fair, the

contest will be held Sunday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 am.

Let us know so we can select a team and try to get a

practice in.

Poultry 4-H members should consider the Poultry

Judging Contest on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10:30.

We will contact the top Life Skills (FCS) judgers to

Q1. Kansas State Fair (KSF) —who qualifies, what are deadlines, what else do we need to

know?

Answer: For the most part, if you are 9 (4-H age) and received a purple at county fair, you are

eligible to exhibit at the State Fair! Fashion Revue does require age 14. Not all areas that we

have at the county fair have eligible classes at State Fair so not all exhibits have an option—be

sure to check the Kansas State Fair fair book or the Extension Office. We have also included a

list with this newsletter. If you didn’t qualify for State Fair, I would encourage everyone to

make a short trip and check out the 4-H exhibits for inspiration and goal setting for next year!

The deadline for KSF entries at the Cottonwood-Barton office is 5 pm on Aug. 9th.

The Extension Office will transport all non-living exhibits as long as the item is not too

large. Non-perishable items (clothing photography etc) can be dropped off any time.

Perishable items (food and horticulture exhibits) MUST be in the office and ready to leave by

8:30 am on Friday, Sept. 6. We will have the office open at 7:15 am for drop off of Foods and

Horticulture items.

Q2. How do we find out about classes, entries, schedules for the KSF?

Answer: The KSF fair book is a great resource https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-

activities/fairs/kansas-state-fair/index.html and the KSF website https://www.kansas4-h.org/

events-activities/fairs/kansas-state-fair/index.html . Of course, the Extension Office is always

happy to answer questions also!

Q3. Can we purchase advance tickets to KSF?

Answer: Youth tickets (age 6-18) can be ordered at the Extension Office by Aug. 6 and MUST

be paid for at the time of order. An order form is enclosed. Reduced price tickets can also be

purchased at Dillon’s through Sept. 5th.

This page is dedicated to the new and not-so-new 4-H families who may have questions about upcoming events and activities. If

you have a question, send it to Michelle and we’ll include it!

LEADERS’ CORNER

THANK YOU to the Club Leaders and Project Leaders who invest your time and energy for 4-H youth!

There are a couple of deadlines coming up in the next few months to begin planning.

1) Record books and KAPs (Kansas Award Portfolio) - does your club have a plan in place to review and sign

off on each of these?

2) Financial Reviews—every organization that holds a financial account (club, 4-H council, Junior Leaders

etc) MUST provide a completed financial review form. The deadline for a completed form is Oct. 25.

These will be presented to the Cottonwood Extension Board for review at the November or December

meeting. Be sure these are completed timely as this can affect the status of your charter.

3) Volunteer Renewals—annual renewals are required each fall and the easiest time is during enrollment!

Remind your club parents who are volunteers to update their information when they enroll their 4-H

members and complete the needed steps. There are some changes happening to this process and

Michelle will keep you up to date as changes occur.

Curriculum Spotlight

Did you know that the Extension Office has a

wide variety of 4-H Project Materials available

for check out!

If you have a new family or a family who wants

to look at a new project, have them contact

the office for some great resources!

The Photography Curriculum set includes

three books covering a range of topics. Focus

On Photography highlights equipment basics,

taking pictures, and concepts of lighting and

flash. Controlling The Image explores depth of

field, aperture and shutter speeds, hard and

soft lighting, and flash techniques. Mastering

Photography provides insight on use of wide-

angle and telephoto lens, filters, light meters,

and shooting photos with different light

sources.

484H

What does your club have planned for 48 Hours of

4-H?

August and September are the times to begin

planning community service projects. Be sure to

register them with Kansas 4-H!

484H will be Oct. 12-13 and Kansas 4-H will be

updating resources soon. Be sure to check out

https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/

conferences-events/48-hours-of-4-h/index.html for

more information.
