Modern Eye Make-up preparations

• The eye is a very sensitive organ• The area of the eye extends from the top of

the eye socket to the top of the cheek bone• Mascara, Eyeshadow, Eyebrow Pencils, Eye

Cream, Eyeliner, Kajal• These must be applied sparingly and correctly• Materials used should be pure, safe, non-toxic

and non-irritating

Desired Characteristics• Easy to apply with even application• No tendency to run and cause smudging• Must not cause the eyelid to stick• Should not dry too rapidly and interfere with

the evenness of application• Reasonably permanent once applied

• Correct application of mascara darkens the eyelashes and increases their apparent length

• The brightness and expressiveness of eyes is enhanced.

Cake/Block Mascara

1. Earlier products : mixture of soap and carbon black with sufficient water added to make a stiff paste, dried and stamped into a cake. 2. Ready to apply and permanent 3. Produced extreme irritation due to soap base 4. Sodium salt of coconut and palm oil used 5. Replaced by less alkaline, less irritant triethanolamine soaps 6. Consistency modified with oils, waxes, colours 7. Modern cake produced by melting together waxy materials, adding colour and mixing thoroughly 8. Pass through heated roller mill after cooling the mixture, remelt and cast into cakes

1. Prepared by milling pigment into vanishing cream base2. Colours may be incorporated into the base after completion of emulsification or while the mixture is still hot3. Agitation continued till product cools and then filled into containers
