Disappointed in the lack of critical coverage of the arts in Ann Arbor?

Consider following these local sources!

Susan Isaacs Nisbett has been writing professionally about the arts since 1975. Her work has appeared in the Ann Arbor News, for which she was the longtime dance and classical music critic; the Detroit News; the Miami Herald; the New York Times; Dance Magazine; and other publications. She has been the recipient of National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in both dance and music criticism.

a2downbeat.com

Jenn McKee spent nearly a dozen years covering the local arts scene for the Ann Arbor News/AnnArbor.com/MLive Media Group until their recent layoffs. Though first hired to specialize in theater, film, and books, she came to cover a much broader range of events and artists living in the area, and aims to continue doing so.

synopsis

Setting: Venice, Italy, present day

ACT IAt the crack of a new day, four young people: Ferrando, Guglielmo, Fiordiligi, and Dorabella, arrive in Venice. Accompanied by their chaperone, they set out on an exciting adventure in a new city. Don Alfonso debates women’s constancy with Ferrando and Guglielmo, young officers who insist their sweethearts -- the sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi -- are faithful. Alfonso bets that if they give him one day and do everything he asks, he will prove the sisters are like all other women -- fickle. Fiordiligi and Dorabella are comparing pictures of their boyfriends when Alfonso pays a visit, bringing news that Guglielmo and Ferrando have been ordered away with their regiment. The two men appear, and the sisters, overwhelmed with grief, bid them farewell. Alfonso is delighted with his plot and feels certain of winning his wager. Despina consoles the ladies and advises them to forget their old lovers with the help of new ones. The girls, scandalized by Despina’s depiction of men as swaggering liars, depart. Alfonso convinces Despina to help him introduce new suitors into the sisters’ favor, then brings in “gondoliers” — Ferrando and Guglielmo in disguise. Fiordiligi and Dorabella don’t warm to the newcomers at all, with Fiordiligi likening her constancy to a rock in a storm, and they take their leave again. The men, confident of winning their bet, are thrilled, and Ferrando sings amorously of his steadfast sweetheart, but Alfonso reminds him the day is not yet over. As the sisters debate what to do next, the gondoliers storm their cabana claiming to have taken poison. The women call Despina, who urges them to care for the men while she fetches a medic. She returns disguised as a lifeguard, pretends to draw off the poison, then watches with Alfonso as Fiordiligi and Dorabella waver under renewed protestations of love.

ACT IIIn the afternoon, Despina urges Fiordiligi and Dorabella to choose their favorite, and each picks the other’s suitor. After the gondoliers serenade the sisters, Despina and Alfonso give lessons in courting and leave the young people together. Guglielmo, courting Dorabella, succeeds in replacing her gift from Ferrando with a new charm. Ferrando has no such luck with Fiordiligi, who still thinks guiltily of Guglielmo. Comparing notes later, Ferrando is furious over Dorabella’s betrayal, but Alfonso is not finished yet. Under Despina’s supervision, Dorabella tries to persuade Fiordiligi to give in, but Fiordiligi decides that she and Dorabella must join their lovers at the front. Ferrando appears, however, and wins her over. Now Guglielmo is furious, but the officers still owe Alfonso time: as night falls he plans a double wedding. The couples are married by a “notary” -- again Despina in disguise. As they sign the contracts, the women hear a military march that heralds the return of their original suitors. They force the gondoliers into hiding and try to compose themselves for Ferrando and Guglielmo, who shed their disguises and enter, dressed as soldiers. Confessions are made by the sisters, and forgiveness is begged. Alfonso bids the lovers learn their lesson, and with a hymn to reason and enlightenment, the day comes to a close. — courtesy of Opera News

Wolfgang amadeUs mozart (Composer) Born in Salzburg on January 27, 1756, Mozart was a child prodigy. His earliest known composition was written when he was five, and he began performing publicly a short time later. By the age of 13 he had written concertos, sonatas, symphonies, a German operetta, and an Italian opera buffa. In 1771 Mozart was appointed concertmaster to the archbishop of Salzburg. He moved to Vienna in 1781 where he married Constanze Weber. Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio, 1782), a singspiel combining songs and German

dialogue, brought Mozart some success. With the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte he created the comic masterpiece Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro, 1786), which, after a lukewarm reception in Vienna, became a sensation in Prague. From that city also came the commission that resulted in Don Giovanni (1787). In the space of three months in 1788 Mozart composed his last three symphonies—No. 39 in E Flat, No. 40 in G Minor, and the Jupiter Symphony. Returning to Vienna, Mozart composed his clarinet quintet (1789); his last opera buffa, Così fan tutte (1790), and his last piano concerto, the Piano Concerto in B Flat (1791). In Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute, 1791), Mozart returned to the German opera in the singspiel. Its composition was interrupted by a commission from a wealthy nobleman for a requiem mass and by the composition of La Clemenza di Tito (1791). After the production of Die Zauberflöte, Mozart worked feverishly on the requiem, with the foreboding that it would commemorate his own death. He died at the age of 35 without finishing it.

lorenzo da ponte (Librettist) (1749-1838) The son of a Jewish tanner and leather dealer, Da Ponte entered the seminary and was ordained as a priest. After leaving the seminary, he went to Venice, where his romantic adventures eventually led to a fifteen-year banishment on charges of adultery. Da Ponte went to Vienna, where he became poet to the Italian theatre for nine years. There he wrote the libretti of three of Mozart’s operas— The Marriage of Figaro (1786), Don Giovanni (1787), and Così fan tutte (1790)—and many other works. Banished again because of scandal, he wandered through Europe settling in

1791 in London. There he worked as a tutor of Italian, a bookseller, and a librettist to the Drury Lane Theatre, until he went bankrupt in 1804. He set out for America in 1805, but he failed as a grocer in New Jersey. The rest of his life he spent as a celebrated teacher of Italian language and culture. He taught nearly 2,000 private pupils and was appointed professor of Italian language and literature at Columbia in 1830. In 1833 he helped establish the Italian Opera House in New York City, where 28 performances of Italian opera were given before the theatre was transferred to other management. Da Ponte’s last years were marred by poverty and the failure of his Italian opera. He wrote a remarkable collection of memoirs (ed. by Arthur Livingston, tr. 1929) detailing his extraordinary life.

Since 1974, Friends of Opera has supported the SMTD Department of Voice and its distinguished opera program, allowing voice students at the University of Michigan

to experience the greatest opportunities for study and performance. Gifts to the Friends of Opera provide discretionary support to the Department for programmatic needs such as covering the cost of opera scores for students performing in main stage productions, enriching the opera workshop program, and funding a cash prize to the winner of the annual Friends of Opera vocal competition. Gifts to the Friends of Opera Endowment provide funding for student scholarships and assist the Department in attracting top talent to its program.

The following opera enthusiasts have made a recent gift to the Friends of Opera. Their support makes a difference at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and also throughout the opera world, by ensuring that our students develop the skills, artistry, and experience they need to become the next generation of great opera singers. Thank you!
