From the Manager’s DeskWith my busy schedule, it seems like the deadline

for this article comes around weekly instead of monthly. I can only imagine how the folks

that put together this great magazine feel. This month I was suffering a little from writer’s block and was not sure what to write about until I did my daily tour of the

community. About a third of the way around, it hit me. The beauty of the community and the activity

inspired me just when I needed it. The greenest grass you can imagine and palm trees with colorful native plant life thriving in the middle of the desert. The people out walking, running and taking the family pet for a walk while taking in the natural beauty looked like a modern day Norman Rockwell rendition of small town USA. There were folks standing on the corner and visiting with each other in the outstanding weather on another sunny, gorgeous Corte Bella day. What about the all surrounding mountain ranges off in the distance, do they ever lose their majesty? Coming here for the first time, you think you are on another planet as I remember. There was activity everywhere I went and lots of smiling faces. It made me feel like I had the best job in the world and I am not so sure that I don’t. I love everything about this place.

At the age of 55 and just when I was starting to convince myself that I knew everything, I get to come to work every day and hear great stories, interact with unbelievably talented and experienced people while improving upon my own character and education at

the same time by simply listening. What a way to make a living. There is so much talent and kindness here. Now I’m not saying it does not have its moments but, come on. Are you kidding me? People say to me all of the time “I would not want your job”. I understand the sentiment but don’t share the thought. Just this morning, I attended and spoke at the monthly Welcome Committee event where I met a whole new group of incoming Corte Bellans. Most looked like kids in a candy store with big eyes ready to enjoy the obvious, amazing lifestyle that Corte Bella provides. It was like; here we go! Does it get any better than that? I say no, it does not. I am impressed that you made it here and hopeful that you will stay. What a great choice you made to come here. As always, it is the great privilege to serve you that I look forward to. Everything that I love about life is represented right here in Corte Bella.

Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager

The 2 March Annual Membership meeting went very well. Several presentations were given to some 80 residents on a variety of topics. Jim Williams did an updated reprise of “Our Community”

presentation to emphasize what that phrase really means for all of us. Walt

Kearns gave the Treasurer report. Highlights: the Association had a net operating surplus in 2014 in nearly every budget category, including Anacapa, that has had a surplus for third year in a row.

CB Events Group has had a surplus for two years running. Jeff Ablin offered a

look at Finance Committee focus areas last year and this year. 2015 will see added emphasis on budget and business process enhancements, and expanding financial guidelines. Regina Shanney-Saborsky gave a short recap on projected 2015 waste water and water activities and ARC accomplishments. Bob Baldesari introduced the APS subcommittee and summarized past, current and projected efforts. NASC Al Schroeder provided a recap on priority projects and progress on security issues and actions being considered. Web Administrator, David Wright, presented details on using and navigating the community website, and the Visitor Management System. The meeting handout and all of the presentations are available on the Community Website ( Main Menu item HOA, then Community Documents>>Board Room>>Annual Meetings>>2015 ).

Well – what suspense! With four candidates vying for four positions. The Board of Director election results are: Donna Norton, Jim Williams, Walt Kearns and Larry Leighton. Congratulations to them all! The official ballot count is:

Donna Norton: 537 Jim Williams: 537Walter Kearns: 533 Larry Leighton: 509

The Revenue Ruling question passed overwhelmingly 558 (yes) to 13 (no). That ruling provides that net excess income carried forward to the following year is not taxable.

There were 649 Ballots received (646 by mail, 3 handed in at meeting), of which 618 were certified eligible. 31 ballots were certified ineligible – 24 of the 31 because there was an incorrect, or no name and address on the ballot envelope. The other ineligible ballots had various errors including duplicate ballots, empty or incorrect ballot envelope, and non-listed owner.

First Service Residential (FSR) conducted mandatory Director training on 10 March. Elected Directors will meet other requirements of the Election Policy in preparation for their certification and seating at the 1 April Organizational meeting. Board Officers and Committee Liaisons are selected, and other assignments are made at this meeting. Stay tuned for results.

Would like to close with a sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU to Regina for her eight years of unselfish and dedicated service as the first Director to serve a full three terms. Regina was absolutely surprised by the special award presentation at the Annual Meeting to recognize her stellar service to the community. On behalf of the Board, the GM and the Community, I wish her the best possible future.

*Footnote: Regina advised she would continue as a volunteer member of GAC, and provide advice to ARC. She will continue to be available to help where and when needed, and that’s a good thing!

The weather has been beautiful here in Sun City West and is only going to get better moving into spring. Keep an eye on our calendar of events for special buffets and menus coming up.

Here is a light Brunch dish that has been a favorite of mine for years. Easy and versatile, you can make it that morning and let set in a warm oven until ready to serve. Enjoy.

Happy Spring Season from the Anacapa Restaurant

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant

A Fun Rolled-up Rolled Omelet Recipe

A Fun Rolled-up Rolled Omelet Recipe

• 2 cup Eggs • 2 dash Worcestershire Sauce• 2 cup Milk • 2 dash Tabasco• 4 oz Flour • 2 pinch salt

In a small bowl, Mix ½ the milk with the flour until smooth. Add the rest of the milk. Add other ingredients and strain. Use now or Refrigerate for later.

1 cup + Cooked bacon, or any ingredient you like, chopped1 cup spinach, sliced1 cups + of your favorite melting cheese

Rolled Omelet Directions.• On a small cookie pan. Lay a sheet of aluminum foil across

so that it overlaps on all sides. Try not to make any creases• Carefully push the aluminum foil into the corners of the

cookie sheet with the edges up so that the edges of the aluminum are up over the lip of the cookie sheet sides.

• Using a clean dry cloth, put two fingers in the cloth and smooth out the corners and ripples in the aluminum foil with a rubbing motion, like your polishing the foil.

• Spray well with nonstick spray. • Ladle your batter into the foil. Have about half inch

coverage, more if you want it thick.• Sprinkle any vegetable or meat ingredients into the egg

mixture evenly, leave cheese for after baking.• Place in a 325 degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes, turning

once, until the egg mixture has just set, no wet spots. Pull from oven.

• Sprinkle cheese over and let cool slightly on counter, about 2-3 minutes, until cheese is starting to melt.

• Using your hands with gloves or small towels. Pick up the lip of the foil and fold over the first inch of egg to start the roll. The egg should easily slide off the foil.

• pushing the aluminum foil down and away from you. Slowly start the roll until to the other end of the cookie sheet. Take the back lip of egg and fold it onto the roll.

• Use the aluminum foil to wrap the egg roll. Keep rolled in foil tightly for about 5-10 minutes until set. (The cheese holds the layers together). Can hold in a warm oven for up to 2 hours.

• You can unroll and slice at any time, thick for a plated dish or thinly for a buffet.

Actually, we want you to do the complete opposite. As we all know, word of mouth advertising is the best you can get. Executive Chef Dan Haywood and Food & Beverage Manager Fred Hernandez, continue to set high standards and surpass our expectations. Below are several recent comments from Corte Bella residents and two well known on-line travel and dining websites. Spread the word about your Anacapa restaurant!

“Susie, the Hostess at Anacapa .... Lovely is the word. Truly caring about each and every patron. Saying goodnight by name to each couple/person. Asking pertinent questions about their dining experience. How fortunate we are to be graced by her presence.” - CB Resident Jane Barlow

“We recently had lunch at the Anacapa Restaurant who are now fully open for business in the freshly renovated establishment. The tables are roomier and they have added to the menu. The renovation was a success and the service is still first class” - HOODSY1292 via tripadvisor.com

“Fred and Dan, This is a bit delayed, but most sincere. Tom and I would like to say thank you for a lovely buffet dinner, atmosphere, and service on Christmas Eve. We brought family members with us. All was wonderful! Thank you for your hard work.” - CB Residents Tom and Barbara Beshers

“Every time we go, we like it more. Service is great... a very comfortable, friendly bar and very good food. And close to home! - Mike O. via Yelp.com

“Today (Tuesday, 13 January) I had a wonderful and delicious lunch at our community restaurant. From the moment I arrived at the reception desk, I was served with efficiency and style. My soup was so good... a vegetable beef soup with whole small mushrooms and chunks of savory beef and vegetables. It was perfect for this rainy day. My curry chicken sandwich was so very tasty with the cranberries and the excellent curry flavor. All is all, my experience was wonderful and the staff was perfect in their attention to my needs. I’m so very happy with the Anacapa and will dine there whenever I can.” – CB Resident Linda Wright

“Even though the Anacapa Restaurant is located inside the gated community of Corte Bella, it is open to the public. The newly renovated interior is quite posh. The service is extremely welcoming and attentive.” Jsweeps via tripadvisor.com

Also, when dining at the Anacapa, we would really appreciate it if you took the time to fill out the comments card about your dining experience. This is a very important way to ultimately improve your dining experience. By filling out the card, you provide valuable information that is reviewed by the restaurant management staff and acted upon.

Neighborhood Awareness & Safety Committee Report PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALKSPedestrians have the right of way when crossing at crosswalks in Corte Bella. It is the law. Please be courteous and observe this regulation for the safety of our residents.

TRAFFIC STUDYThe Traffic Study project is nearing

completion and NASC will be ready to report the findings to the community as it relates to dangerous intersections and the identification of sections where there is serious speeding.

RESIDENT VISITOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

It is very important for residents to register into the system so Security Staff can grant admittance to those you have registered.

This is most important in helping our level of security. You can do this by going to the HOA office. In addition you are able to register your vehicles. Our goal is to register everyone in Corte Bella. Please help us to achieve this important goal.

TAILGATINGTailgating continues to be a problem causing damage to the barrier arms. The safest way to enter through the gate is to leave enough room between your vehicle and the one in front of you to give the arms a chance to fall completely back into place. Our biggest problem is vehicles that follow too closely and try to enter right behind the vehicle in front of them on the same gate opening.

NEXT NASC MEETINGThe next NASC meeting is on Thursday, April 2 at 9 AM in the Laguna Room of the Anacapa Restaurant. All homeowners are invited to attend.

Bill Blake, NASC Liaison

On March 18 the Government Affairs Committee’s APS Team presented their recommendations and planned approach to resolving the APS streetlight issues to the Corte Bella-HOA Board of Directors.

History:In 2007, when Pulte Homes transferred ownership to the Corte Bella Country Club, Inc., they also transferred responsibility for 22 service agreements with APS for 285 streetlights of varying types throughout the community.

The term of the agreements was 5-10 years in accordance with an established E-47 Dusk-to-Dawn rate schedule, which included the cost of the lamp, dusk-to-dawn lighting, the anchor base and the poles paid each month.

Team Recommendations to the Board:• Do not go dark;• Do not purchase street lights;• Immediately replace the HPS (High Pressure Sodium) lamps

with LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lights;• Simplify service agreements by re-structuring under one

contract as LED’s are installed;• Possibly pursue a tariff schedule change with the ACC; and

• Establish maintenance provisions in tariff schedule to reduce street light pricing after an established cost recovery period or other pricing alternative.

Summation:The APS Team is committed to working with the Government Affairs Committee through the Corte Bella-HOA Board of Directors. We intend to pursue all available avenues of discussion with APS and others in a positive, energetic spirit of cooperation to benefit the Corte Bella Community.

Volunteers: Corte Bella’s Busy Bees!April is National Volunteer Month, and April 12-18 is National Volunteer Week. It’s a good month to not only recognize those who volunteer, but a time to simply renew your efforts, or to take the opportunity to look at ways that you can help out.

The Board of Directors defined a Volunteer Recognition Program (VRP) May 2013. Done because it is important to honor the people who dedicate themselves to helping the community. The VRP program drives this second annual CB Times volunteer recognition issue, periodic Kudos Korner articles, and the annual volunteer appreciation dinner (13 April). The CB Events Group is coordinating all aspects of the dinner; from decorations, program, emcee, menus and seating, they are doing it all. They also came up with this year’s great theme “BEES”, and hence the title of this article. It really is appropriate, and as they advised me – this conjures up everything from “volunteers at CB create a great BUZZ” and “to BEE or not to BEE a volunteer”, to “BEE the change you want to see”.

We 45 and 55 plusers must persist with volunteerism and the spirit of giving. Most of us have successfully completed one or more careers, and are now reaping the benefits. We are fortunate to find ourselves living the good life at Corte Bella – living the American Dream. Remember – that Dream is a connection to the idea that we want to support each other in pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. And, that connection is sustained by the support of family, friends, community and even strangers. As 45/55 plusers, our skills, knowledge and experience represent valuable volunteer resources.

Where and how do you begin volunteering? Charity begins at home and in this case home is Corte Bella. So, in your own back yard look no further than your HOA Office or contact some of the various volunteer groups. There is plenty of need to go around - the various Committees, CB Events Group, CB Times and web administration – all need volunteers to continue their excellent work. Several groups and individuals provide support from within Corte Bella to a wide variety of causes. For example, the annual pet drive supported by Gail & Stan Peskin, Water Drive to Survive supported for eight years by Rita and Alan Richards (and their Halloween Drive), those supporting the Salvation Army (Angel Tree, San Ramon Stringers and others) The SOuL group (Smiling Out Loud) holds several annual Corte Bella charity events supporting Eve’s Place and the St Mary’s Food Alliance. The Ya-Ya Interest Group supported the Susan G. Komen for Cure, Toys for Tots and Santa Photo Op. The CB Veterans Group supported several Veteran related charities during 2014.

There are many more possibilities outside Corte Bella. To name a few: Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, Hospice care, medical escort, or be a senior companion by reading, running errands and doing lunch. The list is endless. The VolunteerMatch.org website will make your search easier. There are hundreds of volunteer opportunities currently available in Surprise, Sun City, Sun City West and Peoria alone. BEEing a volunteer pays off!

Please take the time to thank a volunteer – an encouraging word helps and pays forward. That is one purpose of this Annual Volunteer Recognition article – the volunteers are listed below. A sincere, personal THANK YOU for all you do, and for enhancing Corte Bella!

For the third consecutive year, Corte Bella’s Charity Group SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) partnered with Corte Bella native daughter Bonnie Stenzel and with Sun City Grand’s Katie Iverson to offer an evening of musical entertainment for our community. Bonnie and Katie once again provided a treasure trove of songs for more than 300 attendees at performances on two consecutive evenings in Corte Bella’s Social Hall. The concert, titled “Let It Go

– an Evening of Songs of Hope and Courage,” was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The concert was made even more special and memorable by the contribution of Carlyn Vigil, who created a wonderful video montage of Corte Bella pet dogs and cats. A raucous applause was raised each time owners recognized their pet’s

images on the two video screens. Bonnie and Katie donated both their talent and their precious time to help SOuL support two charitable organizations, Eve’s Place (a center for domestic abuse victims) and Sun Valley Animal Shelter (a non-profit, private animal shelter). All proceeds from the concerts are being equally split between the two non-profit organizations.

SOuL wishes to thank both Bonnie and Katie for

the genuinely unselfish donation of their wonderful voices and for their thoroughly entertaining programs. What an amazing gift to our community! What a wonderful donation to two worthwhile organizations! SOuL is also thankful to everyone who purchased a ticket and attended the concerts. Thank you all for your continued generosity and support. Finally, a great big “Thank You” to those members of SOuL who sold tickets and helped promote this wonderful fund raising event.Bonnie Stenzel

Visibility for bike riders is of the utmost importance. Years ago, my husband and I were driving on a long desert highway and saw in the FAR distance something pink. As we drew closer, we saw that it was a young woman on a bicycle wearing a day-glow pink jacket. We saw “pink” long before we saw her. We immediately went out and bought bright day-glow jackets for our bike trips.

Our tree lined and narrow streets give the community of Corte Bella its unique character. But caution for bicyclists and joggers is advised especially at dawn and dusk. A lifesaver vest with reflective tape, the type worn by lawn maintenance workers, can be purchased at most home improvement stores. Bike safety helmets are a must. Blinking red lights give extra protection. Always carry a cell phone for emergencies and have your name, address and emergency contact information in your saddlebag or pocket.

As warm weather approaches and spring break brings family and visitors into our community, we will see an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic on our streets. Our visitors may be on a borrowed bike, riding in a group, enjoying the scenery and perhaps not wearing a helmet. Be prepared!

While driving at the 25-mile per hour speed limit, it takes just three minutes to reach either gate. An extra measure of caution as you drive through the community will insure that you and your neighbor reach your destination safely.

In the LoopThis month’s column is a discussion about shop

vacuums and their many uses. Every garage should have a shop vacuum on hand for

general use and in case of emergencies. The shop vaccan be used for picking up wet and dry. It is the ideal vacuum for cleaning out a car interior where there might be rocks and other debris that would damage a regular

vacuum. I personally own a twenty gallon shop vac which can pick up an incredible amount of

debris before it has to be emptied. Emptying is a cinch because when you remove the top all that is left is an empty drum that can be readily dumped into a garbage bag. There isn’t very much that a shop vac can’t pick up and live to tell the tale, unlike a regular vacuum.

The feature that separates a shop vacuum from a regular vacuum is its ability to pick up water and wet debris. It is extremely

useful in cleaning up both solid and wet animal waste, especially from carpet. A spray bottle of water and a shop vac becomes a somewhat clumsy and yet efficient version of a carpet cleaning extraction machine. Next time your pet has an accident pull out the shop vac and use it to pick up the mess. It saves times and does a better job of overall cleaning, short of having professional cleaning equipment available at all times. The biggest difference is that you can get the mess out of the carpet with no damage to the fibers. If you were to take a rag you would damage the fibers between blotting and rubbing.

Shop vacuums are good for emptying the water out of a water feature when it is time for a cleaning. I’m able to vacuum the water out of the little pools in my waterfall and clean out all the debris at the same time.

The emergency use I mentioned was in regarded to having a flood, such as a pipe break, heavy drip or a water heater leak. Unlike a mop the shop vacuum can get into tight places to pick up water. The best part is that they are a are relatively inexpensive vacuum, usually costing under $100. If you have any questions, such as how to clean up a pet mess contact me at [email protected].

Corte Bella Vets The Corte Bella Vets guest speaker for the March meeting was Roger K. Ferland, the 2014 Outstanding Disabled Veteran of the Year. In 1968, Mr. Ferland was diverted from law school when he was drafted into the Army. Sent to Vietnam, he first served as a squad leader and then platoon sergeant before he lost both legs and severely injured an arm when he

stepped on an explosive device. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor (V) device, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. In 1974, he graduated from Duke University Law School and began a distinguished career in environmental law.

Mr. Ferland has written several publications and proposed rules on Greenhouse Gas Emissions regulations as well as opportunities in Renewable Energy Projects in Indian Country. After practicing for more than 35 years and serving on the Military Legal Assistance Committee of the Arizona State Bar, the DAV Chapter Service Officer worked with his local DAV to spearhead clinics providing

pro bono legal assistance to veterans, particularly in the area of family law.

After receiving the DAV Outstanding Disabled Veteran award for 2014, his immediate response was to ask “Why me?” “We were blessed to survive our injuries while many others did not”. That precious gift of survival imposed a responsibility to do something meaningful with our lives, and that responsibility is continuing and will continue as long as we live,” Ferland said.

Gerry Berger, a veteran and Corte Bella resident coordinated the program for the CB Vets. Mr. Ferland talked about his early childhood and other events leading up to his college days and the draft in 1968. As a platoon Sergeant serving in Vietnam in 1970, he stepped on a land mine and discussed his experience of evacuation and recovery. A CBS video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2INkFnGJQM) ) depicts the exact location of his unit and the other servicemen who were rescued and taken back to Hawk Hill. After returning to the USA, Ferland’s passion was to complete law school, dedicate his time to Veterans, help the blind and work on conservation issues. His effort on behalf of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) continues today providing veterans with support on Wills, Estate Planning, Power of Attorney and other valuable legal benefits that are not currently provided to Veterans by the VA. Over 50 attendees attended the event and Mr. Ferland answered questions after his presentation. Mr. Ferland continues to give back and his efforts are greatly appreciated.

Taking CareYou’re healthy and young, for your age; but I have a few aches and pains that I didn’t use to. My balance isn’t what it was, resulting in Emilie banning me from ladders. And I no longer easily regain my balance when I stumble. Falls are a leading cause of injury for young people like us and not just after that extra glass of wine.

Speed makes biking and running particularly dangerous. But people fall when simply walking or playing golf. And falls inside the house are even more likely. People trip on doorway thresholds and stumble over Fido and Fluffy, who just love to follow closely behind.

Our bathrooms are usually the most dangerous. Wet floors, wet bodies and simply getting into or out of bathtubs are all hazards. Grab bars at our bathtubs and showers may not be placed just where you are likely to grab for them. While you might use a towel bar to balance when drying your feet, they will not support your weight when you fall; they’re attached only to the drywall.

Look at where grab bars can best help getting into and out of the shower and tub and onto and off the toilet. Then have them installed. Install hand rails or grab bars for getting through doorways safely too. Keeping yourself safe allows you to be well enough to assist Nellie Neighbor or Cousin Carl when they are dealing with an injury, disability or medical procedure.

That’s what our lucky good health is for, isn’t it? To be there for our special people when they need help, fooling ourselves into thinking we have finally found life’s purpose and come into sainthood. But don’t be fooled: being a caretaker, even for a short time, can really tax your saintly bits.

You may never have been with your best friend for two weeks straight, or you may have forgotten what it was like to live with your sister after forty years. She had quirks then, but they have gotten worse.

Duh! She’s sick, in pain, or anxious about her chemo and radiation! Of course she’s testy. Not everyone can act like a saint when their world is coming unglued.

And you probably won’t be saintly for long when you’re putting your life on hold to be with the patient who seems to resent that it’s him and not you. How can you keep from telling off the ingrate and earn your gold star in the Great Book?

Start by not expecting too much of yourself and by taking care of yourself as well as the patient. Get away, do things you want to do when you can, and don’t expect the patient to act like this is a vacation for the two of you. Even private-duty nurses have lives away from the patient.

Line up help for your friend through assistance organizations. (And if she doesn’t want that kind of help, maybe she doesn’t need help at all.) They are available to give rides to medical appointments, provide meals, sit and talk with her for an afternoon, and other services.

Look for them in phone books, on the internet, or through other organizations that you know. You might succeed in arranging enough help for your brother so that you can simply come for an enjoyable visit while you check to make sure that everything you have set up is going well.

Then you can imitate the patient, cheerful saint that you always wished was in you.

World of Friends is a Corte Bella Interest group bringing together friends and neighbors who are from or interested in other countries.

We all know that Alaska isn’t “another” country, but working and living in Alaska is quite “foreign” at least for most of us.

On Monday, April 13th, 2015 at the monthly gathering of World of Friends, the topic will be Alaska. Evie and Randy Hansen will share their fish tales accumulated in over 60 years of work within the seafood industry.

The World of Friends Corte Bella interest group is celebrating

its first year and invite you to attend this friendly gathering of residents who share a richness of history, music, customs, culture, and of course, travels.

Come if you were born in the USA, in another country, have spent time living or traveling abroad, as well as those who have not yet traveled, or if you are just... interested.

Bring your tales at 4:30 pm on April 13th and celebrate with a finger food appetizer from your country, a story to tell and any drink of your reference, perhaps a unique wine from your area.

Lady Putters of Corte Bella was organized in December 2004. Official play began on January 3, 2005 with 27 members. Fast forward to 2015 and we now have 104 members with 50-65 ladies putting weekly during the season.

We putt on Monday morning using the putting green behind the golf Clubhouse. The golf club

sets up the course for us and it changes every Monday because they move holes and tee markers for each hole. This varies the length and direction of the putt. We start at 9:15 from November through March and 8:15 from April through October. You do not have to join the golf club or know how to play golf to join Lady Putters. All you need is a golf ball and a putter. However, if you do play golf you know that putting is very important to lowering your score. We can help you practice your putting in a fun environment.

The cost to join Lady Putters is $65. This fee includes your one-year membership dues, a monogramed white golf shirt that says “Lady Putters of Corte Bella”, a purple apron and a nametag. Thereafter, the renewal fee is $20. We also pay $5 every Monday that we putt. Can’t be there every Monday? No problem. You only pay $5 when you putt.

A small birdie pin is awarded for each 5 holes-in-one. A large birdie pin is awarded for any 3 holes-in-one made on the same day. After putting 5 times, you establish a handicap and become eligible for money prizes. Monetary prizes are awarded monthly based on putting performance and are in the form of a credit which can be used for purchases at the golf shop or meals at the Grille.

During the year we have several fun events: Exchanges with Lady Putters from other Golf Clubs, a Member/Member and a Member/Guest tournament, Aloha Day, etc. Check out our Lady Putters bulletin board in the Ladies Locker Room at the golf club for copies of our latest Newsletters. Lady Putters is a great way to make new friends, have fun, and improve your putting skills. The newly elected officers of Lady Putters for 2015, invite you to come putt with us as a guest (you pay just the $5) to see how you like it. If you don’t have a putter, we can arrange for the golf shop to loan you one. Questions? Contact Diane Kingsley, President, at 623-234-8505. Hope to see you on the green!

HEALTH & FITNESS

If you visit the tennis courts at Corte Bella, chances are you will see a fun-loving couple who have recently moved here. Doug and Patsy Kitts are new to Corte Bella, but they are not new to the game of tennis. And while they have fallen in love with Corte Bella’s resort atmosphere, they also have fallen “back in love” with tennis.

They both played tennis in high school in the state of Washington where they grew up. While raising

their children, they were busy and put away their racquets for about 15

years. Following a vacation with friends who enjoyed playing tennis, they decided to take it up again.

They enjoy the game because it offers them a chance to get some exercise and to be competitive. It is an activity they share with their kids and is a sport that “we can do together to keep us active and moving.” Tennis helps agility, eye-hand coordination, and brain fitness. Whether playing singles or doubles, tennis has allowed Doug and Patsy to work together.

Tennis is a great way to meet people wherever they might be. In 2006, they traveled with Doug’s 3.5 men’s team to the Nationals in Tucson meeting players from many different areas of the country. They take fun tennis vacations, some of which have included going to the Indian Wells tennis tournament several times to watch the pros play, and their goal is to get to all of the majors.

Doug also restrings tennis racquets, and if anyone needs their racquet restrung, please call him at 253-377-2366.

They have many memories of tennis, but a day that stands out for them happened on Labor Day weekend in Anthem in 2012, when a man on another court collapsed and was unresponsive. With Doug’s law enforcement background and Patsy’s dental

background, they both knew CPR. For 15 minutes, Doug administered CPR while Patsy remained on her cell phone with the 911 operator relaying information until the ambulance arrived. The man had quadruple bypass surgery but took Doug and Patsy out to dinner a month later! That friendship has continued to this day. Patsy recalls, “It was an amazing situation to find ourselves in!”

Tennis is a game that ages with you. Doug agrees with Patsy when she says, “Some of the best players have been much older than us and know exactly how and where to place the ball! Maybe as you get older, you get smarter?” Adjusting the game as we age comes on gradually. Older players learn not to muscle the serves or overheads. They learn to say, “good shot” to their opponent rather than overdoing it trying to get to the ball. No one wants to get into the same situation as the man at Anthem in 2012. Most importantly, we need to eat right and exercise, making sure we are getting enough cardio. In addition, they advise that if you want to learn the sport, you need to take lessons. “Learn the correct habits, not the bad ones”!!

Doug and Patsy are enjoying their new home in Corte Bella and they appreciate the close proximity of the courts to their home. They relish meeting new people “in a beautiful setting”.

The current membership in our pickleball club is 118.

So what’s going on this spring?

• Club member play now every morning except Sunday: 8:00 - 11:00 a.m. Courts are designated for both novice and intermediate players so everyone can join in.

• Evening play (club membership not required) Monday - Thursday evenings: 6 - 8 p.m.

• Open session for novice/intermediate players to improve their skills: Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m.

• Simon arrives! We ordered a ball machine similar to what you use in tennis to practice - but “Simon” is only for use with pickleballs. A great way to improve your serves and various shots.

• Improved facilities at the courts. Member Jim Farley made some new ball holders plus the great racks under the lanai to hang our backpacks and place our rackets to hold a spot for the next game. Thanks, Jim!

Rescheduled from January was a wonderful charity event held at Sun City West that raised nearly $10,000 to benefit the Helping Hands organization. Corte Bella had great representation, sending the following teams:

Holly Peterson and Robyn Ornstein - Gold medalGwen Miller and Bill Spiller (SCW) - Gold medalCarol Cooper and Ozzie Miller - Bronze medalLiz Kozloski and Rudy Black - Bronze medalMarc D’Olivo and Dave Schneider - Bronze medalGeri Tremaine and Cheri LandersSteve Connelly and Naj KlonerKen Tremaine and Jack LandersMary Luparello and Heather PeekMaggie Mikos and Marty MarshPat Seller

In March we held another popular beginners’ clinic and our final social of the season. Three tournaments were scheduled: stay tuned next month to see the results.

We’ll look forward to seeing everyone out on the courts.
