    INTRODUCTION;- Corruptions are widespread phenomena in todays

    public life.

    In the past 60 years we have virtuallyinstitutionalized corruptions as an inseparable part ofour life.

    According to transparency international an NGObased berlin, India ranks at number 85 out of the 156countries in corruption perception index (CPI) of

    2007. The least corrupt country is Denmark and the most

    corrupt country is Afghanistan.

    From the ranking is obvious that India is one of themost corrupt countries in the word.

    INTRODUCTION- - - - - - - - - In our country the phenomenon of corruption

    is rampand not only in government officesbut even in politics.

    Corruption has become so commonnowadays that people are averse to thing ofpublic life without this phenomenon.

    Corruption has almost paralyzed the entireIndian system.

    INTRODUCTION- - - - - - - - - Mr. T.N.Seshan, former chief election

    commissioner of India, opined that every patchof Indian society has become corrupt.

    It is a lack of intellectual, moral and financialintegrity of a nation. It is anti-economicdevelopment, anti-national and anti-poor.

    Sadly, few people trust their governments orpoliticians. Eight out of 10 say political parties

    are corrupt or extremely corrupt, while half thepeople questioned say their government's actionto stop corruption is ineffective.

    NATIONAL SCENARIO Corruption in India is a consequence of the

    nexus between Bureaucracy, politics andcriminals.

    India is now no longer considered a soft state.It has now become a consideration state whereeverything can be had for a consideration.

    Today, the number of ministers with an honestimage can be counted on fingers.

    At one time, bribe was paid for getting wrongthings done but now bribe is paid for gettingright things done at right time.

    EFFECTS OF CORRUPTION Indian administration is tainted with scandals.

    India is among 55 of the 106 countries wherecorruption is rampant,

    According to the Corruption Perception Index2004 Report released by TransparencyInternational India. Corruption in India leads topromotion not prison.

    Corruption in India has wings not wheels. As

    nation grows, the corrupt also grow to inventnew methods of cheating the government andpublic.

    EFFECTS OF CORRUPTION- - - - - - - - To address these challenges, governments

    need to integrate anti-corruption measures inall spheres, from their responses to the

    financial crisis and climate change tocommitments by the international communityto eradicate poverty.

    CAUSES OF CORRUPTION The causes of corruption are many and

    complex.

    Emergence of political elite who believe ininterest-oriented rather than nation-orientedprogrammes and policies.

    Artificial scarcity created by the people with

    malevolent intentions wrecks the fabric of theeconomy.

    CAUSES OF CORRUPTION - - - - - Corruption is caused as well as increased

    because of the change in the value system andethical qualities of men who administer.

    Vast size of population coupled withwidespread illiteracy and the poor economicinfrastructure lead to endemic corruption inpublic life.

    In a highly inflationary economy, low salaries of

    government officials compel them to resort tothe road of corruption. Graduates from IIMs withno experience draw a far handsome salary thanwhat government secretaries draw.

    MEASURES TO COMBAT CORRUPTION Is it possible to contain corruption in our

    society?

    Corruption is a cancer, which every Indian must

    strive to cure.

    Corruption is a way of life and nothing can bedone about it. Only people from underdeveloped

    or developing countries are prone to corruption. We will have to guard against all these crude

    fallacies while planning measures to fight

    corruption.

    MEASURES TO COMBAT CORRUPTION - - - - Foolproof laws should be made so that there

    is no room for discretion for politicians andbureaucrats.

    The role of the politician should beminimized.

    Application of the evolved policies should be

    left in the hands of independent commissionor authority in each area of public interest.

    Decision of the commission or authorityshould be challengeable only in the courts.

    MEASURES TO COMBAT CORRUPTION - - - - Cooperation of the people has to be obtained

    for successfully containing corruption.

    People should have a right to recall the elected

    representatives if they see them becomingindifferent to the electorate.

    Responsiveness, accountability andtransparency are a must for a clean system.

    Bureaucracy, the backbone of goodgovernance, should be made more citizenfriendly, accountable, ethical and transparent.

    CONCLUSION: Corruption is an intractable problem. It is like

    diabetes, can only be controlled, but not totallyeliminated.

    It may not be possible to root out corruptioncompletely at all levels but it is possible tocontain it within tolerable limits.

    Honest and dedicated persons in public life,control over electoral expenses could be the

    most important prescriptions to combatcorruption. Corruption has a corrosive impact onour economy.

    CONCLUSION: It worsens our image in international market and

    leads to loss of overseas opportunities.

    Corruption is a global problem that all countries

    of the world have to confront, solutions,however, can only be home grown.

    We have tolerated corruption for so long.Proper utilization of funds is necessary in the

    sectors of health, education and infrastructure.However, the urgent need of the hour of healthis to adopt a zero tolerance attitude towardscorruptions.
