We remember all those who have died recently especially Stephen McGrail and those whose anniversaries occur at this time: Esme Enright, Catherine Jones, Michael Bray, Edith Gallagher, Joan Bird, Michael Hogan, Colette Slatter, Helena Eatough, Leela Kuriatose, Elizabeth Gange, Bernard Halls, Lucy McCluskey ,Thomas Lynch, Bob Nesbitt, Elsie O’Donnell, Winifred Passmore, Les Southwood, John Staniland, Jean Widger, Osias Prado & Fiona Geraghty. Last Friday we had a visit from the children at St George’s Pre-School, as they came to explore
the Church. As ever, with young children, they were full of amazement and excitement as they saw
so many different aspects of the building. More often than not, we take so much for granted and we
lose the sense of awe that our church gives to its visitors.
With my Induction, this coming Thursday evening at 7.00pm, I am sure that many of our visitors
will also have a sense of awe at the beauty and the sheer size of St George’s Church. At the service
of Induction the new Parish Priest is asked to accept responsibility for the spiritual and temporal care
of the people in his charge. The Pre-School children marvelled at the many faces looking down on
them whilst they were sitting in the nave. In addition, they saw the host of angels, with their various
musical instruments, heralding the heavenly liturgy. By the way, do you know how many angels are
depicted in the church? Well, it is over 30 - so see if you can spot them all. One of the children was
disappointed when I corrected his statement that I was God; I advised him that I was just a friend of
his who worked here.
Thus, I hope and pray that I may keep a sense of awe and wonder in the coming years and that
together we may seek the face of Christ, helping others to find him as well.
