Saints and Special Observances
From The Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
It is good to be back in the saddle. I had a relax-ing and refreshing vacation. Now, on to the busi-ness at hand. The next couple of weekends we will be treated to the Bread of Life Discourse found in John 6
th. Last weekend, we heard about the multipli-
cation of the loaves and fishes. The purpose of this miracle story was meant to prepare for Jesus’ teach-ing on the miraculous Eucharist, the sacrament we receive at each mass.
The problem, however, is that many Catholics today have lost the wonder and awe of the Eucharist. This is becoming quite evident in the way we ap-proach Mass. I have used this expression before in posts, but it is true – many people treat mass as though it is a fast food restaurant: McDonalds, Taco Bell or Arbys. We want to get in and get out as quickly as we can. And because the food and drinks are so convenient, we dress down. And, of course, we woof down our food without even contemplating perhaps how delicious or tasty it is. For us, it is just fast food. And, you know what health nuts tell us – fast food is NOT good for your health.
Fast food means we often will find ourselves get-ting our nourishment, not for conversation sake, but so that we might run back to work, get to the movies with our friends, go back to our hobbies, continue watching a basketball game, etc. Let me make this clear: The Eucharist is NOT fast food. It is an en-counter with the Living Lord Jesus Christ (and not in a symbolic way as our non-Catholic brothers and sisters like to argue.)
Often I get the impression that attending a week-end mass is sort of like an inconvenience for many Catholics. We just want to get it done and out of the way. We don’t want our mass obligation to interfere with a vacation with friends, a day of golfing, a baby shower party, or an afternoon sitting in front of the television. And, yet, we certainly focus on a huge wedding event. We dress up for the occasion and arrive early for the celebration. We spend practically the whole afternoon and evening partying, drinking, eating and dancing the night away. But, the mass (the grandest of all wedding banquets), well, you know how we treat it…
For those who have difficulty comprehending how powerful the Eucharist is, I have this recom-mendation: Sign up for Eucharist adoration at our parish. Just spend one hour with Jesus in the Eu-charist. One hour. That is all I ask. And that is all Jesus asks. Of course, He would want more if we truly loved Him. But, if you want to know Jesus and understand the power and majesty of the Mass, GET INVOLVED WITH EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. He is the Real Thing!
And now some funnies: #1 - General McKenzie was in charge of the Navy, and he was visiting his colleague General Marshall, who was in charge of the Army. McKenzie arrives at the military camp and is greeted by Marshall. They both walk around the place, and McKensie asks: "So how are your men?" "Very well trained, Gen. McKenzie." "I hope so. You see, my men over at the Navy are so well trained, you could see they're the bravest men all over the country." "Well, my men are very brave, too." "I'd like to see that." So Marshall calls Private Cooper and says: "Private Johnson! I want you to stop that tank coming here with your body!" "Are you crazy? It'd kill me, you idiot! I'm out of here!" As Private Johnson ran away, Marshall turned to a bewildered McKenzie and said: "You see? You have to be pretty brave to talk like that to a general." #2 – A major was assigned to a new office on a mili-tary base. While he worked to set up his office, a pri-vate knocked on the door. The major quickly picked up the phone and motioned for the private to enter. On the phone the major said, "Yes, General Schwarzkopf, I think that is an excellent idea. . . . No sir, that's fine, you feel free to call me any time. I'm glad I can help. . . . Yes sir, I will, and you give my best to your family as well. Thank you sir, and a good day to you too, General Schwarzkopf." As the major hung up the phone he turned to the private and asked, "What can I do for you, private?" Sheepishly, the private mumbled, "Um, sir, I'm just here to hook up your phone." #3 - Military Laws - Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you. - No battle plan ever survives contact with the en-emy. - Friendly fire ain't. - The most dangerous thing in the combat zone is an officer with a map. - The problem with taking the easy way out is that the enemy has already has it mined. - The buddy system is essential to your survival; it gives the enemy somebody else to shoot at. - Incoming fire has the right of way. - If your advance is going well, you are walking into an ambush. - If you really need an officer in a hurry, take a nap. - The only thing more accurate than incoming en-emy fire is incoming friendly fire. - Don't be conspicuous. In the combat zone, it draws fire. Out of the combat zone, it draws ser-geants. Fr. Murphy

In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows
aboard ship while emigrating to America. They bought a house in Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direction of a priest. Soon they relocated to Washington. There, the "pious ladies," as the neigh-bors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the president of Georgetown University, to begin a religious community. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visitation Order founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s. The unique vision of this order followed a sensible rou-tine, less arduous and more flexible than most tradi-tions, and also accepted widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visitation be-gan without reference to the "rule" of the Order. Most of the European convents had been lost under the "reign of terror," and the rules and customs of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially established the monastery. By then, some French nuns had regrouped, and they sent a habit and cross to be copied. (No religious wore the habit in public in the United States until after the Civil War.) From the be-ginning, the Georgetown nuns had an educational mis-sion, even though they discovered in the "rule" that such work was officially off-limits for the contempla-tive life. In America, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visitation is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic education, and the adjacent monastery is the oldest monastic foundation in the original thirteen United States.

Film is about Sr. Clare Crockett, a budding actress who leaves her career and the open doors to fame behind to give her life to God. Some might see this as a total failure. But was it? Those who knew Sr. Clare speak in this film. After her tragic death in the 2016 earthquake in Ecuador, the fail-ure might be seen as having reached its devastating end. Yet, many think that the story doesn’t end there. Thanks to the Servant Sisters’ archives with over 15 years of photos and videos of Sr. Clare’s life. HM Television Presents this documentary to show you the real-life story of this Sister who gave her ALL to God, keeping NOTHING back. GOD'S WORK
We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God?
We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being "God's work." But everything
we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God's work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct
connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is "God's work?" "This is the work
of God, that you believe in the one he sent" (John 6:29).
