Introduction

Dharma Bharathi Mission (DBM) is a socio-spiritual organization for nation-building. It was founded in 2003 by Acharya Sachidananda Bharathi. DBM is responsible to provide moral and spiritual leadership to the Second Freedom Struggle for a hunger-free, caste-free and corruption-free India. This Second Freedom Struggle of India was initiated on 30th January 2008 from Gandhi Mandapam, Kanyakumari, in the concluding prayer meeting of the year-long ‘Desh Vandana-2007’ undertaken by Swami Sachidananda Bharathi.

'Dharma Bharathi Ashram' at Mulanthuruthy near Kochi is the spiritual home for members of DBM. Even though Sadguru Jesus Christ is honored as the Power and Spirit of the Ashram, Dharma Bharathi Ashram is not part of any Church or religion. The Ashramites respect all reli-gions and its’ distinct traditions. The Logo of DBM represents our three fold understanding of God and Truth.

History of NGO

DBM is placed under the legal ownership of Navasrushti International Trust. It functions according to its Manual approved by NIT and published by ‘Navasrushti Publications’. The DBM Manual is being revised from time to time by the National Coordination Council of DBM based on new experiences and insights that are being gained in its evolutionary growth. This is being done under the advice and guidance of the Acharya-guru of DBM.

Navasrushti International Trust (NIT) was founded by Acharya-guru Swami Sachidananda Bharathi to promote national regeneration of India and to usher in a civilization of love and culture of peace in the world based on the eternal moral and spiritual values common to all religions. It was registered in Kerala with a global coverage on 8th September 2005. The Registered Office of NIT functions from Dharma Bharathi Ashram, Mulanthuruthy, Kochiand Kerala - 682314. Swami Sachidananda Bharathi is an Air Force Officer turned seeker of truth and promoter of peace. Membership of Navasrushti International is open to all peace loving people of good will above 18 years of age, from all over the worlds, who are in full agreement with the aims and objectives of the Trust.

DBM has been functioning under the able leadership of Sri. Paramjeet Singh, IRS who has been serving as its National President ever since its re-dedication to God at Kanyakumari on 30th Jan 2008 as the ‘core organization’ for and within the Second Freedom Struggle of India.

Vision and Mission

‘Begin with self, begin today and begin small’

A spiritual rebirth of the individual, a moral regeneration of the human family, and an ecological rejuvenation of planet earth together constitute the three-fold vision and mission of Navasrushti International Trust. The declared aim of NIT is – 'To promote national regeneration

Health and hygiene project

DBM has reached 5000 students through all its programs in the year 2012-13

Vocational Training

Unemployed youth and shortage of skilled manpower are two ironies that co-exist in India. DBM has started the ‘Project Kayakalp’, which seeks to bridge this gap by providing a combination of livelihood and life skills training programs to the youth. Some of the training programs are:

Computer courses (Basic, Tally, MS Office) Basic Mobile repairing course Tailoring course Beautician Course Balwadi Teacher training course Para nursing course Mehendi course

Women Empowerment

The government of India and the state authorities worked for the economic betterment and development of women in India. Key instruments for supporting women’s empowerment are self-help groups, whereby 10-20 women from the same slum, mostly poor women come together to contribute two-weekly or monthly dues as savings and provide group loans to their members. DBM has formed two self-help groups (SHG), to enable them transform their lives by advising and training members in a variety of income generating activities.

PROJECT THEME

CHALO ENGLISH SIKHAYEIN!!!!

Dharma Bharathi Mission (DBM) an ngo is running Dharma Bharathi Mission Project Teach English campaign, Chalo English Sikhayein. The reason why this project came into existence was that an immediate need was expressed by the children at almost all the learning centers wanting to ‘Learn English’. During the 2008 Campaign, at the very first session children expressed the same to the volunteers. Those who knew some English greeted the volunteers as “Good morning Sir/Madam”.

Based on this, the focus of the Project, Teach English of DBM was teaching functional language or we can say Basic English, Moral Values and Civics to the children. DBM at present is running this project in three schools. The main purpose of the campaign was to build a bridge between those of us who have the time, knowledge and the inclination to help the less privileged to get educated.

The theme of the project is to educate and teach Basic English to the student so that they can speak fluently.

The Project Teach English program has divided the entire curriculum to teach English to the children in 11 sub-themes where 1 sub theme is to be covered in a week. Since we had only 3 weeks in hand, we had covered maximum part of the curriculum.

PROJECT AREA

We were asked to teach at Trombay Public High School situated at Mankhurd. Students coming to the schools are from lower middle class families residing at the slums of Mankhurd, and since the financial condition of the family are so bad that the parents don’t have time to look after their children as both are working. What we had read in Google thatthe children there are indulged in unwanted activities like drugs, smoking, alcohol consumption, etc. So what we can say is that Trombay Public High School has come up as a ray of hope for the children of Mankhurd who always wanted to learn and speak English fluently and also as a ray of hope for all those parents who are working and don’t have time to look after their children because somehow if their children are at school there is less possibility that the children would indulge into any bad habits.

13

Page 14: Corporate Social Responsibility

Outputs

We as team tried our level best that whatever do somehow have a positive effect on children and their lives studying there. First we did an ice breaking session with the students by making them introduce us so that they may become open to us and discuss their fear, problems with us and also build an understanding with us. We use to prepare their curriculum every day as in what we have to teach them on daily basis. We as teaching committee was not only there just to teach them English but also to make them good human beings, as the environment and the locality where they are living has a bad impact on them and since both the parents are working they cannot keep an eye on their kids. So we did are level best in teaching them the importance of getting up and sleeping on time, drinking milk, eating fruits and vegetables, respecting your elders, parents and teachers, greeting parents, friends and teachers every day, being helpful, honest, cleanliness, etc. We showed the importance of all these things through the help of posters, videos and through motivational lectures. We were also asked to teach them some civic sense also so we taught them about our national flag, Mahatma Gandhi, about our country, President, prime minister, name of the country and its capital.

Outcomes/ Results

The fear with which five of us came to Trombay Public High School that will the children understand what we teach them, but the major fear was will they actually listen to us when we teach them. But our motivational level went up when we saw that curiosity among the students to learn English. The period of 15-20 days were a great experience for us as well for those children because whatever we taught them and the way we taught them they enjoyed it and also grasped it. The change in all the classes where we taught was visible. The children started wishing each other in English and tried using English sentence like MAY I GO AND DRINK WATER, in front of their teachers. Then biggest victory for us was when the principle of the school Ms Halima appreciated us because she can see that visible change in the students which she had observed in within these 15 days in her children and can see a revolution taking place in her school which she didn’t see. Even parents of many children came to meet us and were very much interested in continuing their Childs education that to in English. But for all of us the results were shell shocking because we had hardly spent 15-20 days with them teaching them. Ms Halima also marked out one thing to us that the level of confidence in her children has also increased which was lacking before in them

14

Page 15: Corporate Social Responsibility

Major activities

The major task with which we came to Trombay Public High School, Cheetah Camp, at Trombay was to teach English to the students. The main task which Dharma Bharathi Mission gave was CHALO ENGLISH SIKHAYEIN!!!! Since the entire team had to teach students who belonged to various backgrounds especially the ones who didn’t had any English background. So we had to teach them in such a way that they could easily understand what we are teaching them and able to grasp quickly what they were being taught. The entire team did a lot of brain storming as in how to make the curriculum that may create interest in the students and listen to all the teachers attentively. We all knew we had to teach kids and retaining their interest for long is difficult. So we opted for using more of innovative ideas to teach them. As we know it’s a human tendency, more the innovative methods, more the students are interested in studies. So we used various games through which we planned to teach them like target game, fruit salad, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi etc. We taught them various English words which they had to use it while they play. Also we taught them how to introduce themselves in English,Pronunciation of words, parts of body (Body parts and their names in English), vowels, tenses, and family relations, Name of Days, Months, Festivals, Seasons. Also use of Where, What, Why, When, Which, How.

THE TARGET GAME

We wanted to teach students the importance of trusting each other. Through the target game we did this. We first blind folded the students and then their team members have to guide them and put the dot in the target. Also through this game the children learned the following new words.

• Backward

• Right

• Down

• Left

• Up

• Forward

15

Figure 1 Target Game

Page 16: Corporate Social Responsibility

FRUIT SALAD

Fruit salad was an outdoor game to make students learn the names of the fruits in English. With this method they learned names of new fruits with their spellings also.

Figure 2 Fruit Salad

KHO - KHO

Taught students about team work and how every team is important and dependent on each other. From this we wanted to help students understand that unity is very important in a class or where ever and whatever you do.

HANDBALL

• CATCH

• HOLD

• PASS

KABADDI

Words like grab, run and come back, etc were taught to the students.

Figure 5 Kabaddi

17

Figure 4 Handball

Page 18: Corporate Social Responsibility

Body parts

The most important thing which we did was we asked the kids to draw the body parts on the black board and label those parts. The importance of this activity was that it will help the children to remember the parts of the bodies with the spellings. Even if they don’t remember the spelling at least they will remember which part is called what.

Figure 6 Pictures of Body parts

Figure 7 Teaching of Body Parts

Quiz

Quiz helps in bringing interest in the students and to learn the subject. Quiz helps in retaining the data taught for a longer period of time and yes this is a tried and tested formula. When children hear things from other sources they tend to learn it more quickly. Thus we kept quiz as an important part of curriculum and fear among the students to study. Also it give opportunity to all the students to participate in class.

18

Teaching through videos

Teaching through videos is a new method for teaching. Sounds and video clippings is a method through which students can learn quickly and grasp the information very quickly.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

CHALO ENGLISH SIKHAYEIN

In this project, the students are basically taught English. But as we know, it’s not feasible to teach a language in 15-20 days. So, we motivated them to learn English, so that they take the first step towards learning English.

We taught them simple words and sentences. To teach them in a better way, we conducted various games and activities and involved teaching English in them.

We taught them greeting and wishing people, according to the time and situation.

Introduction

Every person must be able to tell about himself/herself and that is the foremost thing we taught them. Also, daily we asked students to give their introduction in front of the whole class.

Fruits, Vegetables, Grains etc

Along with teaching the children the importance of healthy food, we also taught them the English words of the fruits and vegetables. An outdoor activity was also conducted for that called “Fruit Salad.”

Time, Date, Months, Years and Days

We made students to learn days (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday etc.) in English along with names of months and number of days in each month. We also taught students how to ask the time and how to tell the time. (5 O‘clock)

MORAL VALUES

Respect and Prayers

We taught the students, the goodness of respecting elders and why we should respect anyone for that matter. Also, we taught them that, as soon as we wake up, we should pray to god and thank him.

Thanks & Sorry

Students were taught the significance of the usage of these words. How a person is liked by everyone with right type of attitude and where these words are to be used.

20

Page 21: Corporate Social Responsibility

Encouraging everyone

We told them the story of crabs pulling their legs and don’t allow each other to come out of the container. This analogy is related to the ill effects of teasing others and pulling down.

Optimum Utilization of Water

Students were taught that water is a scarce resource and we must save it. We much water should we use to drink, how much water is wasted when the tap is left open while brushing the teeth etc.

CIVIC SCIENCE

Indian Culture

Students were explained about the diverse culture of India and that there are many religions, languages, dance forms, etc. We explained the students about the rich and eminent people of India. We told them the stories of people like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi, Sachin Tendulkar etc. in order to motivate them.

Country, States and Capitals

We taught the students about what a country is, what a state is and what the capital of a state or a country is. We also told them to include this in their Introduction. (I live in Mumbai.) We also taught them the number of states in the country.

General Knowledge

We told the students about our national game, bird, animal etc. to make them aware about our country. Other general knowledge was provided like, Father of our Nation, Current President, Prime Minister etc.

RTI (Right To Information)

We explained the students about this particular act that the Government has induced. We taught the students how this law can be a useful tool for them now and also in the future and how they can use this tool to help them when they need to.

21

Page 22: Corporate Social Responsibility

Findings

We have actually seen the classroom from the other side. (i.e., from the teacher’s side.) We have learnt how to teach and what techniques we should use in these 20 days.

We have tried and discussed many activities and techniques among our group members to gain ideas about what information to be given to the students and what will be beneficiary.

Students of Trombay Public School have been very friendly and highly motivated to learn. We have observed that many students have started greeting in English along with using other basic words in English.

Conclusion

Now we are in a position to state very clearly that the responsibility that was assigned to us is 1000 % successful. We have added a new- dynamic, highly motivated, more enthusiastic, energetic, confident, youth brigade to the population of our country which will transform the fate of our country, i.e. the India which was dream of the father of our nation, Shri Mahatma Gandhi.

We know we can’t change the entire country in a jiffy but we know we can change it one day by adding up the values and education in this youth Brigade.

We have planted a new plant which will fruitful the entire society one day in a form of change that will leads to “Change in Nation”.

If you want to explore the change, the very first thing is to be the part of change. Here I would like to mention one of the comments that was put forward by Head Mistress Mrs. Halima Ma’am – She said,” She is surprised to see students frankly having interaction with the teachers, even the small kids are also interacting us in English, saying us “Good Morning, Thank You” like words. She very clearly stated something new, very new – magic is going on in school. There is some-thing new the air.

She said,” she is looking for the same interaction of students with teacher too in future. For this she will be taking open house debate with teachers soon.

We have learned that people might forget what you said, people might forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

22

Page 23: Corporate Social Responsibility

Recommendation to NGO

Outdoor Activities:

In the school, mostly Kho - Kho and Kabaddi are played by the students. So, School must encourage other games too which involve Physical Training (P.T.) Also, the students will get to know and understand about other games and sports.

Division Of Class:

We have observed that, it is quite difficult and in fact, less fruitful to teach students of 3 different classes together. We have noticed that, in the morning session, students of classes 2, 3, 4 and 5 were taught together in the same classroom. They are quite less in number and that’s the reason why the school arranged accordingly.

Creative Teaching Methods:

We have seen that, other than traditional method of classroom teaching, students require to be taught creatively. They must be taught using games, activities, presentations etc in order to impose the necessary impact. For example, teachers can conduct quizzes in order to revive the interest of the subject among the students.

Motivation

According to what we have seen and observed, we believe that motivation is what they need the most right now. We spoke to their teachers and principal and they’ve said that whatever they learn or gain knowledge, it is only from the school. Their lifestyle doesn’t allow them or may be doesn’t have that to motivate students to set and aim or to study.

Career Guidance

School must provide some guidance to students for their career options. They must make students understand their potential, what they are good at and let them judge their goal. Especially, the students of class 11th and 12th are needed to be guided. It’s always better to guide the students of class 9th and 10th to help them select the stream they want to study in for higher educations.

23

Page 24: Corporate Social Responsibility

Learning

As some body has said very true that “Study the past if you would like to define the future.”Yes today we are living in an ultra-fast world where no one has time to remember past but one thing that we can do to remember and learn all those beautiful past moments is to spend times with kids.

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.”I have learned that people might forget what you said, people might forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel i.e. the power of Insight.

We got a platform where we could implement all the theories and ideas that we have learnt in our school and college life. Various ideas that we had used from day 1 (when we were like intruders in a forest) to the last day when we became one of the responsible, credible and role model mem-ber of Trombay Public School were an Ice breaking Session, Insight Sessions, Team Building and Leadership skills.

We have learnt how to adopt and perform very well even in less resource and worse condition. We have learnt that doing crib always is not going to solve the purpose, initiatives has to be taken from your side and you are the only person responsible for your pros and cons.

Working on this project has help us to recognize our inner potential i.e. It has helped us to recog-nize the entrepreneur which is already there in each and every person. It has helped me in creat -ing and innovating new ideas and helps us to implement the same in very significant way.

When you really work in an uneven condition, the condition in which you haven’t ever dream of being there, than you can really know your inner potential and strength and it will help you to come up with new techniques, new ideas, new thoughts to coupe up with and at that point of time you are in the position to correlate your real life observation and theoretical learning.

We have learnt how to perform, how to act, how to react, how to put your points, how to moti -vate and how to build the team in which every member have different state of mind. We have learnt to build the “University of Diversity”.

The very important thing that we have learnt is that how you report your superiors as we will be doing the same in future.
