Work with circular economy and recycling experts
on real business challenges in the recycling industry
Description• Large corporations need to develop a flexible innovation culture
and environment where innovations can be generated fast and brought to market rapidly (Lean Startup, ‘fail fast’).
• Especially, the trend of digitalisation including digital business models and the need to constantly generate new products are a major challenge companies are facing.
• The recycling industry is affected not only by technological progression in the various recycling processes but also by emerging technologies in all industries which are able to impact the nature, amount or flow of waste and services.
• Further, shifts in behavioural patterns of society, e.g., sharing economy, zero waste ideal etc., are able to influence our business.
• In an innovation environment students will explore and analyse challenges REMONDIS is facing and develop solutions for real business challenges.
Structure• Working in small groups (3-5 students) on case studies
(6 cases) from REMONDIS with a focus on digital business models, innovation and strategy.
• Workload is equivalent to 6 ECTS (180 hours) consisting of: - Participation in four mandatory meetings - Written term paper (group work) - Final presentation
• The second and final meeting will be held at the REMONDIS HQ in Lünen. It will include a guided tour of the Lippe Plant - Europe’s largest industrial recycling centre. Costs will be covered.
• Teaching elements: - Guest lectures from REMONDIS experts - Interviews with REMONDIS experts and external practitioners
or customers (depending on topic) - Insights into the innovation ecosystem at REMONDIS - Interactive discussions and mentoring
• Methodological approaches to seminar topics may range from scientific analyses to practical approaches, such as, design thinking, ideation workshops etc.
Assessment• Research proposal (10%), Interim presentation (15%) • Academic paper (40%): 7-10 pages/person • Final presentation (35%): 15-20 minutes/group • For all counts: Scientific evaluation (50%)/Expert evaluation (50%)

Seminar topics will cover six different business
challenges of a sustainable future

Plastic recycling innovations Even tough plastic provides many advantages for society there are challenges in recycling the different kinds, especially composite packaging. Novel recycling processes, i.e. plastic eating bacteria or recycling it back into crude oil, are interesting solutions. Landscape these plastic recycling inventions and treatment possibilities and debate the impact of them.
Decentralised recycling plants There are several startups that concern themselves with providing plant operations such as waste-to-energy, water treatment or industry filtration on a small scale. These innovations can address whole new target groups such as B2C customers or public e-car charging. Research and discuss existing and uprising technical solutions and elaborate on the diffusion of these mobile plant inventions.
Alternative fuel for trucks For a long t ime sc ient i s ts are researching technologies, that could replace diesel for trucks. Have a look at evolving technologies and unused potentials to find an answer to: How will the truck industry develop in terms of fuel resources? What influence will this take on the biodiesel industry?
RETRON exhaust gas solutions REMONDIS’ innovative transport and storage system for lithium ion batteries seals battery waste and secures the environment from exploding batteries. In case of ignit ion, exhaust gases are a particular challenge. Therefore, analyse the exhaust gas composition and propose sustainable solutions for the exhaust system of the RETRON battery recycling bins.
Smart Water Management Connecting devices securely, reliably and providing high performance capabilities are cornerstones for smart cities. At the moment there are three uprising Low Power Wide Area Network rad io technology standards (NB-IoT, Sigfox, LoRaWAN) with different pros and cons. Compare these and dig deeper into evaluating economically viable LoRaWAN u s e c a s e s f o r w a t e r r e s o u r c e s management.
IIoT plant optimisation IIoT technologies that are combining sensors with artificial intelligence offer new ways of improving plants. Look for best practices in predictive maintenance, energy utilisation and resource input/output optimisation for plants across industries. Against that background build a framework for optimising recycling plants taking the example of a waste-to-energy plant.
