Fonts: a systematic approach

Well-managed fonts can strengthen your brand internally and externally, and simplify workflow. Poorly managed fonts can create confusion and cost precious time and money. Someone needs to make sure everyone is using the right fonts in the right version and format. If that “someone” is you, FontShop can help. With our extensive knowledge from more than 16 years in the business, FontShop can advise you on all aspects of font management, even the more tedious ones. Whether we’re researching a typeface or making sure everyone in your company is using the right font data, we’re happy to help – so you can concentrate on more important things.

OpenType is the future

If you’re looking for fonts that are easy to manage and implement across your organization, OpenType is the answer. Developed by Adobe and Microsoft, OpenType is a relatively new font format that eliminates PC/Mac font compatibility issues. With an OpenType font, everyone in your organization – both PC and Mac users – can use the same font file. So you can stop worrying about garbled text, misalignments, and other type problems that are common in a combined PC/Mac workflow. An OpenType font can also contain far more characters than older formats (about 65,000 vs. 256). Before OpenType, a font family might include multiple fonts for each platform, each with its own separate file. Now, all those files can be contained within a single OpenType font, making life much simpler and easier for both users and the IT department. Let us help you choose from the more than 10,000 available OpenType fonts, or create a custom OpenType font to meet your specifications.

Every workstation needs a license

Everyone who uses your corporate font – employees and third-party vendors alike – needs a license. It’s that simple. FontShop can help you navigate the complexities of licensing. If you already have a font, we’re happy to (discreetly) check to make sure you have the right license. Based on your requirements, we can tell you if you’ll ultimately save money buying a multi-user license (MUL) instead of a basic user license. We can also negotiate licensing agreements on your behalf; our longstanding relationships with leading foundries often enable us to negotiate better licensing fees, reducing your costs considerably.

A custom-designed typeface can actually save you money

“Custom” means “expensive,” right? That’s not necessarily true. Sometimes, a large multi-user license (MUL) for an off-the-shelf typeface can actually cost more than a custom-designed typeface. And with a custom typeface, you’ll have unrestricted use and never have to pay licensing fees. For example, a space-saving typeface, custom-designed for a specific application, can also reduce your paper, printing, and shipping costs. As pioneers in the digital type business, FontShop has been designing typefaces specifically for the digital medium since 1990. Our award-winning type designers have created unique branded typefaces for a variety of corporate clients, including Nissan, W Hotels, and Bank of America.

Own your typeface, protect your brand

Imagine that your company has just spent months developing a new corporate identity and selecting a new corporate typeface. Then one morning, you open the newspaper and you see it, right there in front of you, in 36-point – it’s your typeface, in your competitor’s ad. The typeface that was the cornerstone of your new corporate identity is suddenly no longer unique and there’s nothing you can do about it. Actually, there is. You can avoid this situation altogether and protect your brand by commissioning a custom-designed typeface. You’ll own it. Nobody else can use it without your permission. FontShop can create a unique, branded typeface that can be your company’s signature.

Most fonts were not designed for global use

Say your company plans to expand into new international markets next year. You’ll need to create marketing materials in Cyrillic, Greek, and other languages. But like many fonts, your font was designed for Western European readers so you’ll need to modify it. FontShop has extensive experience modifying fonts to meet our customers’ specific needs. Whether you need an additional language or a new set of fractions, our expert type designers will ensure that the new character sets retain the original characteristics of your corporate identity. We’ll make sure your brand looks and feels the same everywhere your words appear, in every language.

One typeface does not fit all

What should your type communicate about your company? How many people will use the fonts? In which languages? Choosing the right typeface is more than just finding something that “looks nice.” It’s an important business decision that should be based on your company’s specific brand and business requirements. At FontShop, we’ve been helping our customers make well-informed font decisions for more than 16 years. We can guide you through the selection process, asking the right questions to identify all your present and future requirements. With this information, we can then help you find a family of fonts that suits your particular products or applications.

“FontShop’s technical expertise and ability to create a truly global typeface is impressive.”

Your typeface can make your brand

A successful brand is memorable. To create a strong and lasting impression, companies employ distinctive images, colors, and type, among other design elements. But the ever-increasing availability of stock photography means that fewer and fewer images are clearly “ownable” by any single brand. Type is one of the few remaining opportunities for a company to be truly iconic. FontShop can help you select a typeface that sets you apart from your competition. Drawing upon our extensive knowledge of typefaces, we can provide several off-the-shelf options that are appropriate to your brand and your industry or we can custom design a unique proprietary typeface.

“Over the past twenty years, Audi has developed a comprehensive global identity. The Audi corporate typeface, delivered by FontShop, contributed to that success.”

Type is an expression of your brand. Like colors, images, and other design elements, a typeface conveys your core brand attributes. The way your words look on your brochure, screen, package, or product can influence your customers’ perceptions and leave a lasting impression. Every letter can distinguish your brand. That’s why choosing the right typeface is critical.
