Spelling Bee spectacular

What an amazing week it has been! We have had many activities being held in our school with the big one yesterday for the Premier’s Spelling Bee regional final. We hosted students from 17 schools from the region in a fantastic competition. As I listened to the amazing spellers in both the junior and senior sections I reflect back on my days at school and the words we were taught. I was in awe of their ability to visualise the words and spell them out like it was second nature. Congratulations to our participants Portia, Cohen, Aria and Evelyn. You are a credit to our school and we are very proud of you.

I would also like to say a big congratulations to our Stage 3 helpers on the day as they were tremendous ambassadors for our school. They welcomed everyone with a smile and guidance, they carried themselves with pride and you could tell by the way they went through the day they are proud of our school. Thank you and congratulations. The comments we received and the positive feedback is testament to the staff and the students who put such a great effort into our school and the way we represent the local community. Thank you to Mrs Creamer and Ms Stanton as well as our cleaning staff who dedicated their time to ensure the hall was presented with professionalism and style.

Possum magic

Yesterday was the day magic came to life for the K-2

students as they went to see the Possum Magic stage show. From all accounts they were not tricked by the sneaky possum and had a wonderful time. Being part of the Arts is a fabulous opportunity for everyone and brings a little bit of magic into our world.

Project Rockit

Today Stage 3 welcome Project Rockit as they continue on their anti-bullying awareness path. Bullying is something we are very aware of and we are constantly looking at ways that our students can beat the beast we call bullying. Raising awareness is very important, especially on a day like today (R U OK Day) as we check on our friends and raise awareness of the mental health struggle we have in our nation.

We want your feedback

We have posted links to our Tell them From Me survey on Facebook, the Skoolbag app and emails. Please support us by completing the survey. Your responses are valued and they do lead to the changes needed to improve our school. Please take a small amount of time to complete the survey and provide us with your essential feedback.

For over 11 years Senior Constable Matt Smith has been an integral part of our school community as our Adopt-A-Cop. When the school approached the NSW Police asking for someone to fill the role at our school, Matt enthusiastically accepted the opportunity and was officially ‘adopted’ by our school.

The aim of the Adopt-A-Cop program was to develop positive relationships between our students and the local police, increase awareness of the role of police and encourage dialogue.

Over his time with our school Matt has:

• Delivered talks to classes on the role of police and facilitated Q&A sessions on community and safety topics

• Assisted in classroom activities including reading and writing

• Conducted guided tours of the local Police station

• Supported our attendance initiatives

• Attended excursions to Melbourne and local destinations

• Been a regular presenter at our presentation days

• Popped in at lunch and recess breaks to connect with students and even play the occasional game of football.

The level of excitement that our students demonstrate when he arrives and the confidence with which they interact with Matt shows that he has developed very positive relationships and that our aim in adopting him has been realised.

So, it is with great sadness that we have to say goodbye to Matt as he moves onto the Albury Highway Patrol and the next stage of his career.

Our school is extremely grateful for his time, attitude and approachability and we thank him everything he has done for our students and school community. We wish him well in his new endeavours and hope that he finds time to visit occasionally.

Farewell Constable Matt!

The MS Read-a-thon by Matilda Hicks

Bailey and I have been doing the MS Read-a-thon for all of August. I have read 127 books and Bailey has read 65 books.

Our goal was to raise $200, but together we raised over $1000 for people who live with Multiple Sclerosis and their families!

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us and helped us to raise so much money. We are very grateful and proud.

Stage 3 'I am' poetryDid you know that Stage 3 classes have been participating in classes with Corowa High School English teacher, Miss Allen? Recently, students have been working with Miss Allen on constructing 'I am' poems in an effort to focus on

thinking imaginatively about person's interests, desires and emotions in creative writing.

Below are two 'I am' poems about staff members written by Quokka students Tahli Ray and Evelyn Hooper.

Miss DoughtyI am quiet and polite I wonder what it would be like to teach a 5, 6 class I hear children back chatting I see children completing work I want to see the best for my class I am quiet and polite

I pretend to be strict but deep down I am kind hearted I feel like I am floating I touch the pets from the pet store I teach a 2, 3 class I cry when thinking what the future may hold I am quiet and polite

I understand I am quiet I say not a lot I dream to have kids one day I try my best to succeed I hope to become the world’s greatest teacher (even though she is)I am Miss Doughty

Miss BaringI am fashionable and caring I wonder what life would be like if I went to London for dance I hear children cryingI see children having a blast I wanted to become a famous dancer I am fashionable and caring

I pretend to be strict but deep down I am kind-heartedI feel like I am in my childhood days I touch my engagement ring I teach a K1 class I cry thinking of the past I am fashionable and caring

I understand I am pretty I talk confidently I dream to have a beautiful wedding I try my best to succeed I hope to become the world’s greatest teacher (even though she already is)I am Miss Baring
