A Note from the Playhouse - Member Supported Theatre

Welcome to Coronado Playhouse and to Altar Boyz, the very first show of our 71st Season – A Season of Award Winners. We are so excited to mount a fully staged production of this multi-award winning musical after last season’s limited weekend run. The show’s director and choreographer, Michael Mizerany, is no stranger to San Diego audiences having worked at all the best theatres in town. Now he can add Coronado Playhouse to his resume! This extremely talented cast, the wonderful band, and our exemplary crew and production team have been working with passion and dedication to bring you the ultimate boy band experience! There’ll be sinfully spectacular dancing, angelic ballads, high-energy rock numbers and heavenly harmonies as we all share the message at the heart of this show, brought home in the closing number, “I Believe In You,” a message of fellowship, support, acceptance, hope and charity. We have so many more award-winning productions to look forward to as our Season continues. There’s murder, mystery & mayhem in The 39 Steps; Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach is this year’s family show and again we’re excited to co-produce with our friends from Pickwick Players; Shakespeare’s classic romantic

comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, will grace the Playhouse stage in July and August and will – as always – be free to the public thanks to continued and generous support from the City of Coronado; everybody’s favorite “Horticultural Horror Story” is up next, when Shirley Johnston (last seen as Cassie in A Chorus Line) and one of our most popular musical directors, Kirk Valles, bring you Little Shop of Horrors; and we close the year with a San Diego première, the touching and beautiful new musical Fly By Night, set against the backdrop of the northeast blackout of 1965.As we launch the Season, the Board of Directors and Playhouse staff are reminded that it is our pleasure and privilege to thank YOU - our audience, our friends, donors and members - for making every year memorable. You fill our Playhouse with your open minds and open hearts, you generously support our non-profit partnerships, and you remind us every day why we love making theatre. So brace yourselves and get ready for the night of your lives! The Boyz Are BACK! THE ALTAR BOYZ – and they’re going to ALTER your mind!Katy Skyrud Managing Director Coronado Playhouse

Most of you may not know this, but I am a Broadway baby. I grew up loving, and performing in musical theatre. I caught the fever when I was in elementary school. I played the Cowardly Lion in Good Shepherd Catholic School’s production of The Wizard of Oz. From there, the theatre at Rosary High School and Hazelwood Central High School beckoned. I took to the stage in the chorus of Annie Get Your Gun, Anything Goes, Bye, Bye Birdie and South Pacific. In college, I majored in theatre for about two seconds. As part of the theatre major, I was required to take a beginning movement class. The next semester, I changed my major to dance. Of course, I still dabbled in musical theatre, but contemporary dance took center stage. Then, in 2012, Noah Longton asked me to choreograph Altar Boyz, a good-natured, musical spoof of Christian pop music and trendy boy bands.

Altar Boyz has always held a special place in my heart. One reason is that it was the first musical I choreographed in

over 25 years, but more importantly, for its universal message. Yes, it is a musical comedy with sly humor, parody ballads and energetic dancing, but it also represents what any faith could and should be – a way of spreading love, compassion and peace.

That is why the final image of the show is so important. A white male, an immigrant, a gay man, a self-proclaimed bad boy and a person of another faith holding hands and singing, in harmony, “I Believe In You.” Not a bad mantra to live by.
