Athletics schedule: Check the online calendar for all upcoming events. https://www.tempeunion.org/Page/1578. Please remember, no backpacks or outside beverages (except sealed water bottles) allowed at our events. PARENT COMMUNICATIONS: AcLab: Students should sign up for an AcLab starting Friday after 2:15 pm until Tuesday before 3 pm. Students should receive an email at their CDS school email address confirming their AcLab choice for Wednesday. Student drop off/pickup: Rural lot: Parents, please do not form a line of cars onto Rural Rd. when picking up your student in the afternoon. Please find an open parking spot to wait and communicate with your student where to find you. There cannot be a line of cars backed up onto Rural Road. Please remind your students to use the crosswalks at all times when crossing any street. This is for their safety and the safety of others. Please obey all the traffic signs around campus and remember there is no drop off or pickup on Knox Road in the West direction and No Parking on the north side of the street. The area is clearly marked No Parking. In addition, please, no U-turns on Knox Road – this is very dangerous. We greatly appreciate your help as we try to keep everyone safe. Drop off/pick up of students is allowed in the Rural Lot and on the South curb of Knox Rd. Drop off in the LDS church lot is not allowed. Attendance Auto-Call: If you receive an automatic call stating your student missed first hour and you know you have already called to excuse your student, please disregard the auto-call. There is no need to call us again. Due to the high volume of attendance calls, it may take us a couple of hours to listen to your message/excuse your student. Attendance Line: When your student is absent, please remember to call the Attendance office within 48 hours of the absence. Always include your student’s ID number. Attendance Policy: High school attendance is ultimately the responsibility of the student and his/her family. It is important that parents and students recognize the direct relationship that exists between academic success and regular school attendance. Students should remain out of school only when necessary. Students are allowed 10 absences (excused or unexcused) per semester. The eleventh total absence may result in loss of credit, unless there are extenuating circumstances. School-related absences do not count toward your student’s total absences.

Calculators: The CDS Math department recommends purchasing a Texas Instruments 84 TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator. While CDS has a limited number of these calculators, we will not be able to accommodate every student who does not have a calculator. If you have any concerns, please email Don Guess at [email protected]. No item holds: The Corona del Sol front office does not hold items for students to pick up, including lunch. The exception is your student’s ID. Please arrange to meet your student between classes to give them other items during passing periods. We will not call students out of class to pick up items. Please call us at 480.752.8888 to find out the correct passing times. Off-campus pass: For an off-campus pass, a parent/guardian must call the attendance office on the day of the pass, at least one hour prior to the time of the pass. Students must have their CDS IDs to leave. No off-campus passes during lunch hours (10:15 am – 12:15 am). A parent/guardian must come in and sign the student out. Students feeling ill must report to the nurse. The nurse will contact the parent/guardian to release your student. ParentVUE/Schoology: For Schoology help, please email [email protected]. If you need a ParentVUE access key or your account is disabled, please leave a message on our ParentVUE hotline at 480.752.8775. Parking: A limited number of parking spots remain for the 19-20 school year. If you have done the online registration but have not yet paid, please do so as soon as possible, or see the Principal’s assistant in the front office. Student IDs: All students are required to wear their IDs around their necks and visible at all times during the school day. Please help us keep our campus secure and remind your students to wear their IDs. Skateboards: Please remember riding skateboards is not permitted on campus. Have your students bring locks and lock them up before entering campus. We do not hold them in the front office or in the classrooms.

Corona del Sol Celebrates National Merit Students

On Wednesday, October 23rd, Counselors and Administrators recognized our 12 National Merit Semifinalists, 11 Letter of Commendation recipients, and 3 National Hispanic Recognition Scholars at our Annual National Merit Recognition Breakfast for their outstanding test scores on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

National Merit Semifinalists The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of US high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, these academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million.

Letter of Commendation About 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

National Hispanic Recognition In keeping with the College Board’s mission to help students take advantage of the opportunities they have earned, each year the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) recognizes about 7,000 academically outstanding Hispanic/Latinx juniors who achieve the minimum required PSAT/NMSQT cut score for their region and have a cumulative junior grade-point average of 3.5 or higher to be named a National Hispanic Scholar.

Senior students and parents: FAFSA Opened October 1st – File as soon as you can!

What do you need before you fill out the FAFSA?

If you need financial aid to help you pay for college, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

(FAFSA®) form. The 2020–21 FAFSA form just opened this week on Oct. 1, 2019. You should fill it out as soon as

possible at the official government site, fafsa.gov. All information below is provided by the U.S. Department of Education.

Federal funding is limited, so experts urge students and families to file their FAFSAs as soon as possible.

Students can file the FAFSA online at FAFSA.gov. The U.S. Department of Education provides email and live chat

assistance for FAFSA filers as well as a helpline at 800-4FED-AID.

Here’s what you’ll need to fill it out.

1. Create your FSA ID

An FSA ID is a username and password that you can use to log in to certain U.S. Department of Education (ED) websites.

Each student, and one parent of each dependent student, will need an FSA ID to complete the FAFSA process

on fafsa.gov. We recommend creating your FSA ID early—even before you’re ready to complete the FAFSA form—to

avoid delays in the process. Here’s the information you’ll need to receive your FSA ID:

— Social Security number

— Alien Registration number (for non-U.S. citizens)

— Federal income tax returns, W-2s and other records of money earned

— Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)

— Records of untaxed income (if applicable)

IMPORTANT: Do NOT create an FSA ID on behalf of someone else. That means parents should not create FSA IDs for their children and vice versa. Doing so may result in issues signing and submitting the FAFSA form and could lead to financial aid delays. (Also, it’s against the rules to create an FSA ID for someone else.)

To summarize:

Anyone who plans to fill out the 2020–21 FAFSA form should create an FSA ID as soon as possible. If you are required to provide parent information on your FAFSA form, your parent should create an FSA ID too. Because your FSA ID is equivalent to your signature, parents and students each need to create their own FSA IDs using

their own email address and phone number. Parents should not create an FSA ID for their child and vice versa.

Page 9: CORONA DEL SOL - HOME OF THE AZTECS...2019/11/08  · CORONA DEL SOL - HOME OF THE AZTECS November 8, 2019 AZTEC HIGHLIGHTS FAFSA completion event: FAFSA (Free Application for Federal

2. Have your driver’s license number handy - If you don’t have a driver’s license, then don’t worry about this step.

3. Find your 2018 tax records

On the 2020–21 FAFSA form, you (and your parents, as appropriate) will report your 2018 income information. You cannot use your 2019 tax information. We understand that for some families, 2018 income doesn’t accurately reflect

your current financial situation. If you have experienced a reduction in income since the 2018 tax year, you should complete the FAFSA form with the info it asks for (2018), and then contact each of the schools to which you’re applying to explain and document the change in income. They have the ability to assess your situation and make adjustments to your FAFSA form if warranted.

You cannot update your 2020–21 FAFSA form with your 2019 tax information after filing 2019 taxes. 2018 information is what’s required. No updates necessary; no updates allowed. 4. Locate any records of your untaxed income and records of your assets (money)

The FAFSA questions about untaxed income may or may not apply to you; they include things like child support received,

interest income, and veterans’ noneducation benefits. On the 2020–21 FAFSA form, you’ll report 2018 tax or calendar

year information when asked these questions.

There is a section on your assets which includes savings and checking account balances, as well as the value of

investments such as stocks and bonds and real estate (but not the home in which your family lives). You should report the

current amounts as of the date you sign the FAFSA form, rather than reporting the 2018 tax year amounts.

5. List of the school(s) you are interested in attending

Be sure to add any college you’re considering, even if you haven’t applied or been accepted yet. Even if there is only a slight chance you’ll apply to a college, list the school on your FAFSA form. You can always remove

schools later if you decide not to apply, but if you wait to add a school, you could miss out on first-come, first-served financial aid.

The schools you list on your FAFSA form will automatically receive your FAFSA results electronically. They will use your FAFSA information to determine the types and amounts of financial aid you may receive once you apply to the school.

If you add a school to your FAFSA form and later decide not to apply for admission to that school, that’s OK! The school likely won’t offer you aid until you’ve been accepted anyway.

You can list up to 10 schools at a time on your FAFSA form.

Common FAFSA Mistakes can be found at - https://blog.ed.gov/2017/09/12-common-fafsa-mistakes-2/. This page has

not been updated for the 2019-20 year, but has great information.

*TUHSD will continue to host district and site specific FAFSA completion events and

information events. Dates will be on the district website and in the newsletter, as well as

Naviance emails to students and parents.

**Students and families should be working directly with Financial Aid offices at the institutions

and/or with college admission counselors with specific questions regarding the FAFSA and

awards.
