NEWS AND NOTESLast Time OutCornerstone opened its 2016 campaign in Chicago with a 3-1 weekend that saw them defeat Judson, Trinity Christian and Bethel. The Golden Eagles had a pair of 5-set matches that they won and picked up a nice road win over the host Trolls of Trinity Christian.

Fresh FacesCornerstone saw three players make their first appearance in a CU uniform last weekend. Freshman Kenzie Engelsma and Alyssa Veihl were joined by junior transfer Paetyn Cummings in helping CU post a 3-1 mark.

5-Set ThrillersCornerstone went 2-0 this past weekend in matches that went to five sets. That mark is already significantly better than the 2015 one that saw them drop their only two 5-set matches. CU defeated Judson and Bethel at the TCC/SXU Crossover.

A New Look OffenseCornerstone had a lot of fresh faces on the court last weekend in their opening tourney. Aside from Hope Leppink and Kendra Zwart, many of the players who saw significant playing time were all new to the Golden Eagle offense. Freshman Kenzie Engelsma on the outside as well as junior Heather Green put away the majority of the attacks while junior Maria Ma made her first appearance since her freshman campaign in 2014. Defensively, Mackenzie Vallad made the start at libero in all four matches.

Scouting Peru StateThe Bobcats boast an 8-1 record under interim head coach Joan Albury. Peru State has won its last five matches all via a 3-0 sweep as they won their own tourney with wins over York, Mayville State, Johnson and Wales and Presentation. PSC had five players averaging over 2.0 kills per set led by Rian Kirby (2.72) and Kira Shapiro (2.71).

Scouting BellevueThe host Bruins come into their annual Labor Day Classic with a 4-4 mark as they continue to play some of the strongest competition across the country. 11th year head coach Trish Siedlik and her team went 2-2 last week while picking up wins over No. 13 Dordt and No. 24 Northwestern (Iowa). BU is led on offense by senior Pakalana Helekahi who is averaging 2.94 kills/set and is second on the team with 81 digs.

Scouting Culver StocktonHead coach Caren Kemner is in her 6th season at the helm of the program and has a veteran group in 2016 that is off to a 1-3 start. The Wildcats, who feature seven upperclassmen, won in their final contest over Bethany College at the Missouri Valley tourney last weekend. Madeleine Halford led the team with 24 kills as seven different players had at least 10 on the weekend.

Scouting Briar CliffThe Chargers have played some tough competition so far in 2016 as they went 2-2 at the Red Raider Classic in Orange City last weekend. Fourth year head coach Trevor Schirman has a big roster that features over 25 players. Briar Cliff has been led on offense Courtney Schafer (35 kills) and Nicoletter Lavulo (34 kills). Breanne Hankins is the top defender for the Chargers as she is nearing 100 digs through the first four matches.
