The Things That Are God’s – Part 3 There’s a story of young boy who built a model sail boat. He worked very hard on it. He made all the sails. He carved the wood and sanded it and painted it. He carefully and meticulously assembled all the parts. He put on the masts and attached the sails. It was a beautiful model sailboat. And when he was finished with it, he put it on his shelf in his room. And he was very pleased with his work. One day, he decided to test the boat to see how well it sailed in the open water. So he took his boat down to the river and put it in. It sailed along beautifully. But then it began to pick up speed and go farther and farther out. The boy could no longer reach it and it got away. The boat was lost and the boy went home very sad. Another time, he was walking downtown and he passed a shop that sold used items. He looked in the storefront window and there before his eyes was his very own boat! It was a miracle! He went in and told the store owner what had happened. The store owner said he was sorry but he couldn’t just give the boat to him based upon his story. And so the boy came up with the money and purchased his boat back. As he was walking home with his beloved model sailboat, the boy said, “you’re doubly mine: first I made you, then I bought you!” And so we belong to God. First He made us in His image and likeness. And then He sent His own Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross to save us from our sins and to win us back to Him. We bear the image of God. We owe everything to God, especially our selves, our souls and bodies. We are to submit to Him to become like Him. We are to grow into the likeness of Jesus Christ. We do so by His grace, and by obeying Him, following Him, reading and hearing His word, and by eating the Bread of Heaven, His flesh and drinking the Cup of Salvation, His blood. Yes, we are also to be good citizens. We enjoy many things that the State provides. We want good roads to drive on. We want protection from lawless people who are mean to do us harm. We want to send our children to good schools where they will be safe and can get a good education. If our homes were to catch on fire, we want someone to come to put the fire out as soon as possible. And so on. All these things and more are provided by the government. We are therefore obligated to support the State, to pay our fair share of taxes that support all these things. But we do not owe the State our hearts and souls. We are not to put our faith in the State as we ought to put our faith in God. Render unto God the things that are God’s. Amen.

Y entonces nosotros pertenecemos a Dios.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Tuesday 4:00 a.m.—5:00 a.m. Wednesday 11:00 a.m.—12:00 Noon Wednesday 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. Thursday 9:00 p.m.—10:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

martes 4:00 a.m.—5:00 a.m. miercoles 11:00 a.m.—12:00 medio dia

miercoles 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. jueves 9:00 p.m.—10:00 p.m. viernes 8:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m.

Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Pauline Sanchez, Katie Spurlock & Tina Jobes. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

DO YOU NEED PRAYER OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES?

If so, then please come to the Prayer Booth at this year’s Fall Festival for a time of private, personal

prayer with another person who CARES.

The Prayer Booth is located by the wooden cross, between the church and the Social Center.

This is a non-ticketed booth.

Sponsored by The Daughters of Notre Dame.

from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Judith Kilian (who shares a birthday with him) tells us about Paul VI: Pilgrim Pope, by Michael Collins.

This recent publication in Liturgical Press’s People of God series portrays the life and legacy of Blessed Paul VI, the soon-to-be-canonized Pope, who still speaks to our modern society from his encyclical Humanae Vitae. The Second Vatican Council drew to a close during his papacy, with its reforms bringing about much controversy and change. Dealing with the upheavals resulting from the changes, such as religious and priests leaving the church, a traditional Bishop refusing to accept the new liturgy, and age creeping up on him. Paul VI became discouraged, but would still discharge his duties against medical advice. He was known for his many foreign trips, some being to countries never visited by a pope before. His visit to Africa helped to bring about many converts and vocations there. Paul VI was instrumental in bringing about dialogue with other Christians and encouraging help to the impoverished. History will judge him, but the church is bestowing the title of saint on him this October.

The winner of the festival early bird drawing was Paul Zohlen. Congratulations to Paul and thanks to all who turned in your tickets for the early bird drawing.

Celebrating 106 Years

Notre Dame Catholic School Annual Festival

The festival is quickly approaching! As a parish school we need all your support! We ask that you help us in the following ways:

1). Pray for a successful weekend – A community filled with faith, enthusiasm, community, fun and

fundraising – and of course good weather! 2). Bake your cakes and cookies. It is suggested that each parish family provide 2 cakes and 2 dozen

cookies, but more is always welcomed! The Cake Wheel is extremely popular and is a WIN-WIN for everyone.

3). We are looking forward to this year's festival and we are looking for exciting new silent and live

auction items. We have received a variety of items: Some beautiful prints, jewelry, homemade arts and crafts, restaurant gift cards, theatre tickets, symphony tickets, Wash Tub certificates, Y If you have something to donate please drop them off at the church or school office! As soon as possible please.

4). See the Sneak Peak Preview. 5). Be prepared to say “YES” and volunteer a couple of hours at one of our booths or BBQ dinner.

We can still use your help! Please contact me if you are interested in serving on any of the volunteer teams, I will put you in contact with the appropriate chairperson: some of the areas include: cake wheel, Cake room, Kids Korner, BBQ DinnerY..

6). DO YOU NEED PRAYER or DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES? Then please come to the

PRAYER BOOTH, once again, the Daughters of Notre Dame, will beat this year's Fall Festival. Please invite your friends and family to come also! The Prayer Booth will be located between the Church and the Social Center by the Cross. You can also complete and drop off Prayer Requests which will be prayed over. This is a NON-TICKETED booth.

We will keep you informed weekly as to the progress and where we can use your help.

Thank you very much for your support and generosity. If you have any suggestions or want to volunteer or if you have any questions at all – call or text Katrina @(830)377-7051 or Pete @ (830)928-7383.

Save the Date – SEPTEMBER 15th & 16th!!! SEE YOU THERE! ! !

Have you ever asked yourself:

How can I make my life a gift for others in charity/to my church community?

Well, we have the answer:

By exploring the many opportunities to assist your parish as a catechist,

nurturing the seeds of faith in children, youth, and adults.

But then you think:

I can’t do that. I don’t know my faith well enough to serve in this capacity.

But you do:

While you would be exploring the many opportunities for your own faith formation you would also be

serving and helping in planting and/or nurturing the seeds of faith in so many, whether it be in our

children, youth or in our adults. We really need your help in many areas whether it be in preparing

parents and/or godparents at Pre-Baptismal preparation classes or walking with our children/teens in their

faith journey.

If you feel like you are being called please call the Youth and Family Ministry at 830 896-4233 for more

information. Perhaps God is tapping you on the shoulder.
