§ WalkingTourofaTownship:Todaywillsurelybeaprofoundexperienceforthegroupasyouwillhaveapersonalizedtownshipvisitleadbyanexpert(fromtheGugaSthebeArtsandCultureCentre)withaninvitationintolocalhomesthere.(Theparticulartownshipwillvarydependingonthegroupsize.)Townshipswerecreatedasdormitory-styled,raciallydividedsuburbsforblackSouthAfricans.Onawalkingtouroftheareayou’llseedifferenthousingandsocio-economicareasandgaininsightintothehistoryanddevelopmentofthetownship.AvisittoatownshipisanimportantpartoftheSouthAfricaexperience,helpingvisitorstotrulyunderstandthehistoryofapartheidandtowitnessfirsthandthegrowthofthecommunitiessinceitwasabolished.

§ VisitRobbenIsland(weatherdependent),startingwithashortferryride.RobbenIsland,oncedescribedbyNelsonMandelaas“theharshest,mostiron-fistedoutpostintheSouthAfricanpenalsystem,”hasbecomeaninternationalsymbolofthetriumphofthehumanspirit.Overtheyears,the574-hectareislandhasbeenputtoavarietyofuses.Ithasbeenusedasapantry,ahospital,awhalingstation,amentalasylum,aleprosycolony,amilitarycamp,andamaximumsecurityprisontohouseanti-apartheidactivists.TodayRobbenIslandisalivingmuseumandWorldHeritageSite,atangiblereminderofthepastandasymbolofhopeforthefuture.Tourthevariousbuildingsbuiltfromtherockquarriedbytheback-breakingworkofpoliticalprisonersinthe1960sand'70s.Atthemaximumsecurityprison,wheremorethan3,000politicalprisonerswereheldbetween1960and1991,youcanviewthetinycellwhereNelsonMandelalivedfor18years,sleepingonthecoldcementfloor.Youwillbeprovidedwithdetailedinformationaboutthelonganddarkhistoryofthisonceremoteisland.

§ Todayyouwillhaveafull-daytour.TheCapePeninsulatourtakesinthewholeofthesouthernpeninsula,throughthedifferentareasofTableMountainNationalPark.StartingfromCapeTownyou’lltravelalongthecoastalroaddowntoHoutBayandthenoverChapman’sPeak(weatherpermitting).Atthevery tipisCapePoint,themostsouthwesterlypointofAfrica,theplaceatwhichlegendclaimstheAtlanticandIndianOceansmerge.Theseacliffisoneofthehighestseacliffsintheworld.Namedthe"CapeofStorms,"thisrockyheadlandwastreatedwithrespectbysailorsforcenturies.Bydayitwasanavigationallandmark,andbynight,andinfog,itwasamenacebesetbyviolentstormsanddangerousrocksthatlitteredshipwrecksaroundthecoastline.Rideafuniculartothehistoricalarea.You’llalsovisitBouldersBeach,hometoaland-basedbreedingcolonyoftherareAfricanpenguin.

§ TodayyouwillvisittheApartheidMuseum,thepre-eminentmuseumintheworlddealingwith20thcenturySouthAfrica,attheheartofwhichistheapartheidstory.Aseriesofexhibitionareastakesthevisitorthroughadramaticemotionaljourneythattellsastoryofastate-sanctionedsystembasedonracialdiscriminationandthestruggleofthemajoritytooverthrowthistyranny.Theexhibitshavebeenassembledandorganizedbyamulti-disciplinaryteamofcurators,film-makers,historiansanddesigners.Theyincludeprovocativefilmfootage,photographs,textpanelsandartefactsillustratingtheeventsandhumanstoriesthatarepartofthisepicsagaofSouthAfrica’shistory.ForanyonewantingtounderstandandexperiencewhatapartheidSouthAfricawasreallylike,avisittotheApartheidMuseumisanimportantadditiontoyouritinerary.

§ KliptownCommunityWalkledbylocalactivist.Kliptown,oneoftheoldestdistrictsinSoweto,is

anareasteepedinhistory—violent,restorative,sad,anduplifting.Itismostfamouslyknownasthesitewheremorethan3000peopleattendedwhatbecameknownastheCongressofthePeoplein1955toadopttheFreedomCharter,adocumentinwhichoppressedSouthAfricansformulatedideasofasocietyfreefromapartheidandwhichnowformsthepre-ambletotheconstitution.Despiteapoliceblockadebarringthearea,peoplecamefromfarandwidetoseetheFreedomChartersignedinJuneof1955,eagertoseethebeginningsofdemocracyforminthecountry.Today,thepopulationofKliptownstandsatroughly45,000—bleakandpoverty-strickenbutproudanddefiant.Theareawherethedelegatesmetin1955isnowatownshipbustlingsquarewithamarketplacefortraders,offices,shopsandahotel.AttheedgeofthesquareistheKliptownOpenAirMuseum,builtindedicationtoANCstalwartWalterSisulu.Throughvibrantartworks,photographs,song,narrationandnewspaperclippings,ittellsthestoryofhowheandotherleadershelpeddrafttheFreedomCharter,theresistancetheyfaced,andhowtheCharterultimatelyformedthebasisforSouthAfrica’sliberalconstitution.
