Core Visualization Project
10/9/2017Core Visualization: Report2
Problem: Researchers are not aware of all the resources provided by
cores or cores themselves. This can lead to duplication of resources and
under use of cores.
Goal: Increase the visibility of core resources
Old business: The topic of last year’s Core Leadership Retreat.
We discussed ways to improve the visibility of cores and core resources.
10/9/2017Core Visualization: Report3
Last retreat’s recommendations
Improvements
Improve search for researchers
Develop core families and site
Communications outreach
Web Content
List all cores
Minimum/required info on each family page
Workflows across cores
Links to family pages from cores and RRP pages
Link to resource search
Template (Drupal?)

Added some new cores: Gnotobiotics, IGI CRISPR Screening, LARC/Rederivation,
Patient Recruitment, CTSI CRS Nursing, Broad Center for Imaging, etc.
Combined some cores
Cleaned up database:
• Removed duplicates
• Corrected classifications / enhanced classifications

Faculty Handbook for Success
“Separately, UCSF Cores and shared laboratories provide
researchers with essential resources to promote scientific
discovery. These include access to state-of-the-art
technology; services for basic, translational and clinical
research; and expert advice on experiment design,
protocol development, and the analysis of results. The
Research Resource Program helps researchers navigate
this landscape with a search tool and “map” to core
functions. In addition, the Research Resource Program
offers planning, operational, and financial services,
including a grant for equipment purchases, to support the
development and management of cores.”
