Our nutrition is determi-ned by various factors such

as social, demographic, econo-mic, and lifestyle, which for modern families, is marked by the lack of time, the need to do everything faster and in the shortest time pos-sible, requiring easy and fast to prepare nu-trients.

Today, nutrition is recognized as a major contributor to morbidity and mortality and the develop-ment of chronic non-commu-nicable diseases, such as car-diovascular disease and cancer. Poor intake and micronutrient de-ficiencies are both cause and conse-quence of poverty, since they can have negative and irreversible impact on the neu-ro-intellectual and physical development, cau-sing poor health, diminished cognitive abilities and low working capacity. [1]

That is why the growing trends in healthy food has provided great visibility for vitamins and dietary supplements (VSD) to consumers. In Colombia, it is one of the most important ca-

tegories within the industry of consumer pro-ducts for the health. Due to a disease refusal, with the ideal of better nutrition, recent public health policies have led consumers to buy VSD to feel better and have a better quality of life. There is also a consumer preference towards the use of nutritional shakes palatable, over the intake of supplements in capsules, as the

latter are associated with the treatment of diseases, while formats drinks

are part of the traditional and na-tural diet.

Some supplements can help en-sure an adequate intake of essen-

tial nutrients, and help reduce the risk of certain diseases. Indeed, there

are vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber and other subs-tances that have nutritional and physiological beneficial effects that may be necessary and / or contribute to the structure and functions of certain organs and various physiological sta-tes such as reproduction, conception, growth, development and body maintenance.

Some authors acknowledged that combinations of vitamins, minerals and herbal antioxidants offer a great potential for older peo-ple with mental disabilities. It has also been recognized that, since many years, sta-tes nutrient deficiency have been associated with impaired immune response a n d increased susceptibility to in-fectious diseases. Apparent-ly the use of certain nutrients such as glutamine and ome-ga 3 fat acids from marine sources would help counteract immune response.

th conditions. In order to supply these deficiencies, food consum-

mation should be carefully formulated to ensure the specific coverage. Therefore, such products should be easy to prepare, have a nice flavor and an attractive appearance to

ensure that the targeted population consumes it regularly and as of-ten recommended. This ensures that the individual to whom it is

intended not only demands the bene-ficial health effects but also the

satisfaction generated by consuming the product.

According to Euromonitor reports in 2012, a growth of 3% or more between on VSD sales in Latin America is expected between 2013 and 2018. This implies that this market repre-sent a great opportunity due to sales figures that have been increasing since 2008.
