Decimals are based on the number ten.

The value and position of each digit in a decimal determine how much the decimal is worth.

The decimal point separates the whole number from the part that is less than one.

Example 1Write 431.25 in word form.

Good to Know!When there is no whole number preceding the decimal point, only the part that is less than one is read.

Example 3Write 45.703 in word form.

Insert the decimal for “and”. two and = 2.
