Headphone System. Before operatingthe unit, please read this manualthoroughly and retain it for futurereference.

The MDRqF240RK is a cordless stereo

headphone system using infraredtransmission. You can enjoy listening toa programme free from the restrictionof the headphone cord by simplyconnecting the transmitter to a TV, oraudio components equipped with aheadphone jack or a line output jack.

• Cordless, noiseless infrared headphonesystem resistant to external noise, etc.

• Easy rechargeable battery system

automatically charges the headphoneswhen placed on the transmitter.

• Wide infrared reception range of up to 7m(23 ft.).

• Self_adjusting headband mechanismeliminating th_ need for headband

UnpackingCheck that you have the followingitems before using the headphones:

Charging thesuppliedrechargeablebatteryThe supplied rechargeable nickebmetalhydride battery is not charged from thefirst time you use it. Be sure to chargethem before use.

To charge the headphones, place themon the transmitter.

1 Open the battery compartment

6 Rest the headphones on the

transmitter so that the

headphones' contact pointmeets the transmitter's contact

pin while making sure that the

charging indicator lights up.

The charging is completed in about16 hours and the charging indicatorgoes off.

When the indicator is not lit

Check if the right and left headphonesare rested on the transmitter correctly.The indicator may not be lit if theheadphones' contact point does notmeet the transmitfer's contact pin. Takeoff the headphones and place them onthe transmitter again so that theindicator lights up.

To recharge the headphonebattery after use

Place the headphones on the transmitterafter you use the headphones. Since the

built-in timer recognizes whencharging is complete, there is no need to

take off the headphones from thetransmitter after the completion ofcharging.

Notes

• The transmitter automatically turns off

while charging the battery.

• This system is designed to charge only thesupplied rechargeable battery type

BP_HP550 for safety. Note that other typesof rechargeable battery cannot be chargedwith this system.

• If a dry battery is installed, they cannot be

charged.

• Do not attempt to use the supplied BP*

HP550 rechargeable battery for othercomponents. They are for use with this

system only.• Charge in an environmental temperature of

between 0_C and 40_C (between 32 _Fand

104°F).

When the remaining batterypower becomes weak

When the rechargeable battery becomesweak, the power indicator light dims.

Recharge the battery as soon aspossible.

Note

The rechargeable nickel-metal hydride

battery should be replaced with new one

when they last only half the expected timeafter a proper recharging. The rechargeable

battery type BP-HP550 is not commerciallyavailable. You can order the battery from the

store where you purcha_d this system, or atyour nearest Sony dealer.

Using the headphones with drybattery (sold separately)

Commercially available (size AAA) drybatteries can also be used to power theheadphones. Install the battery in thesame manner as described in steps 1through 3 of "Charging the suppliedrechargeable battery."

When dry battery is installed, thebattery charge function is notactivated.

Notes on Batteries

• Do not charge a dry battery.

• Do not carry a dry battery togetherwith coins or other metallic objects. Itcan generate heat if the positive andnegative terminals of the battery areaccidentally come into contact withmetallic objects.

• When you are not going to use theunit for a long time, remove thebattery to avoid damage from batteryleakage or corrosion.

Setting up thetransmitter

The transmitter is equipped with twoinput jacks, which allows for connectionto the specified output jacks: PHONES1N to the headphone jack, and LINE 1Nto the LINE OUT jacks of yourconnected equipment.

1 Connect the transmitter to an

• Do not connect to the PHONES 1N jack and

LINE IN jack at the same time. If you

connect two audio/visual components toboth jacks at the same time, both of the

audio signals may result in mixed output.

• Use only the supplied AC power adaptor.Do not use any AC power adaptor.

directly to an earphone jack (monaural

mini jack), the audio signal may not beoutput through the right channel. In such a

case, use the separately sold PC_236MS

plug adaptor (stereo mini jack 4=>monaural mini plug) between the

connecting cord and tho earphone jack.

Operating the system

Listening to aprogramBefore listening

To prevent your ears from beingdamaged, first lower the volume.

Turn on the audio/video

component connected to the

transmitter.

When the audio signal is input, thetransmitter turns on automaticallyand the infrared emitters glow butthey do not glow while thetransmitter is charging the battery.If the transmitter is connected to the

headphone jack, set the volumecontrol of the audio source

component as high as possible butnot so high that the audio signalbecomes distorted.

2 Turn on the headphones.

The power indicator on the upperpart of the right housing glows red.

3 Put on the headphones.

Be sure to put the right housing (R)on your right ear and the lefthousing (L) on your left ear.

4 Start playback of the

component connected to thetransmitter.

5 Adjust the volume.

If the infrared sensors are covered

by your hands when adjusting thevolume, the mute function will beactivated and volume may not beadjusted. To adjust the volume,move nearer toward the transmitteror orient the infrared emitters on the

left housing towards the transmitter.

After listening to theprogrammes

Take off the headphones, and then turnoff the power. You may also turn off the

headphones automatically by placingthem on the transmitter.

Note

You may hear some noise when youdisconnect the AC power adaptor from the

transmitter before taking off the headphones.

Charging automatically beginswhen you place the headphoneson the transmitter

- Auto charge function

Placing the headphones on thetransmitter automatically turns themoff, and then charging starts. Thiseliminates the need for turning on/offevery time you wear and take off theheadphones.

Sound is automatically muted ifnoise increases

- Mute function

If the infrared rays are obstructed, orthe headphones are used outside theireffective range, noise will increase andsound will become hard to hear. To

avoid potential ear damage as a resultof noise, this function mute any soundfrom the headphones. Sound isautomatically restored when you movenearer the transmitter or remove theobstruction.

If no audio signal is input formore than approximately 5minutes

The transmitter turns off automatically.

Note

The brightness of the infrared emitters maynot be uniform, however, this is not amalfunction.

Notes

• If you use the headphones at too great adistance from the transmitter, you may

hear a hissing noise and if there is an objectbetween the headphones and the

transmitter, sound may be interrupted.

These phenomena are inherent to infraredray communication and do not mean that

there is a problem with the system itself.• Do not cover the infrared _l_ors with

your hands or hair.

• When you use the headphones inside thearea in the illustration above, the

transmitter can be placed in front, behind

or by the side of you.

• The noise you may hear through theheadphones may vary depending on the

transmitter position and room conditions.It is recommended that you place the

transmitter in a location that produces thedearest sound.

• Do not use this system in areas expo_d to

direct sunlight or strong light. The soundmay be interrupted.

• Plasma displays may interfere with normaloperation of this system.

Replacing the earpadsThe ear pads are replaceable. If the earpads become dirty or worn out, replacethem as illustrated below.

The ear pad is not commerciallyavailable. You can order replacementsfrom the store where you purchased

this system, or at your nearest Sonydealer.

1 Remove the old ear pad bypulling it off.

2 Place the new ear pad around

the housing.

Precautions

• When the transmitter is not to be

used for a long period of time,disconnect the AC power adaptorfrom the AC outlet holding the plugand remove the battery to avoiddamage caused by battery leakageand subsequent corrosion.

• Do not leave the cordless stereo

headphones system in a locationsubject to direct sunlight, heat ormoisture (It is recommended to use

the headphones at a temperature ofbetween 5°C and 35°C (between 41°Fand 95°F).)

• Do not drop, hit or otherwise subjectthe transmitter or headphones tostrong shocks of any kind. This coulddamage the product.

Notes on headphonespreventing hearing damageAvoid using headphones at highvolume. Hearing experts advise againstcontinuous, loud and extended play. Ifyou experience a ringing in your ears,lower the volume or discontinue use.

Keep the volume at a moderate level.This will allow you to hear outsidesounds and to be considerate to the

people around you.

Be sure to bring the headphones andthe transmitter to Sony dealer whenrequiring repair work.

Troubleshooting

No sound/Muffled sound

Turn on the transmitter first, and then

put on the headphones.Check the connection of the audio/

video equipment or the AC power

adaptor.

Check that the audio/video equipmentconnected to the transmitter is turned

Oil.

If the transmitter is connected to theheadphones jack, raise the volume ofthe audio/video equipment connectedto the transmitter.The mute function is activated.

• Check if there is any object betweenthe transmitter and the headphones.

• Use the headphones near thetransmitter.

• Change the position and angle of thetransmitter.

The headphones' power indicator lightdims, flashes or goes off.• Charge the rechargeable battery if

the headphones' battery is weak, orreplace dry battery with new ones. Ifthe power indicator is still off aftercharging the battery, take theheadphones to a Sony dealer.

If you connect the LINE OUT jacks ofyour connected equipment to thePHONES IN jacks of the transmitter,volume may be too low. Use the LINEIN jacks of the transmitter instead. See"Setting up the transmitter".

Distorted sound

If the transmitter is connected to the

headphones jack, lower the volume of

the audio/video equipment conl_ectedto the transmitter.

The headphones' power indicator light

dims, flashes or goes off.

• Charge the rechargeable battery if

the headphones' battery is weak, or

replace dry battery with new ones. If

the power indicator is still off after

charging the battery, take the

headphones to a Sony dealer.

If you connect the headphone jacks of

your connected equipment to the LINE

IN jack of the transmitter, sound may

be distorted when raising the volume.

Use the PHONES IN jacks of the

transmitter instead. See "Setting up thetransmitter."

Loud background noise

Move closer to the transmitter. (As youmove away from the transmitter, more

noise is likely to be heard. This isinherent in infrared ray communicationand does not mean that there is a

problem with the unit itself.)

Check that there is no object between

the transmitter and the headphones.Check that the infrared sensors are not

covered with your hands or hair.If you use the headphones by a

window where the sunlight is toostrong, draw the curtains/blinds to

shut out the direct sunlight, or use theheadphones away from the sunlight.

Change the position or angle of thetransmitter.

If the transmitter is connected to the

headphones jack, raise the volume of

the audio/video equipment conl_ectedto the transmitter.

The headphones' power indicator lightdims, flashes or goes off.

• Charge the rechargeable battery if

the headphones' battery is weak, orreplace dry battery with new ones. If

the power indicator is still off after

charging the battery, take the

headphones to a Sony dealer.

used at the same time.

• Turn off other transmitter or move to

a place outside the range of thistransmitter.
