10 Tips on Winning a Scholarship 1. Start searching for scholarships as soon as possible. Don't wait until spring of your senior year in high school to start searching, or you'll miss half the deadlines. Continue searching for scholarships even after you are enrolled in college. Consider this like a full time job. 2. Answer all of the optional questions on a scholarship matching web site for about twice as many matches. 3. Use a free scholarship matching service like Fastweb.com. The Fastweb database is updated daily, and the site will email you notifications of new scholarships that match your personal background profile. www.cappex.com and www.studentscholarhips.org are also very good. 4. Pick up applications for local scholarships in Ms. Gilman’s office (when available) or the financial aid offices of local colleges & universities and check out the public library's jobs and careers section. 5. Apply to every scholarship for which you are eligible. Pursue less competitive scholarships, such as small awards and essay contests, since they are easier to win, and the money adds up and helps you win bigger scholarships. 6. Don't miss deadlines. Use a calendar and checklist to get organized. 7. Tailor your application to the sponsor's goals. Read and follow the instructions carefully. 8. If you have difficulty writing essays, try recording yourself as you answer the question out loud, and transcribe the recording later. Most people can think and speak faster than they can write or type. Create an outline afterward to organize your thoughts. 9. Personalize your essay and be passionate. Write about something of interest to you. Make your application stand out from the crowd. Talk about your impact on other people. Give examples and be specific. 10. Google your name and make sure you have a professional online profile. Use a professional email address such as your Coral Reef email. Clean up the content of your Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat/TikTok etc… accounts, removing inappropriate and immature material.

Application IS NOW open!!! Listed below are very important things the students need to know when applying for the

scholarship. Please feel free to share them with your students.

1. The student must complete the FIU admissions application which will include them

providing their test scores and transcripts.

2. Once they apply to FIU they will be given a Panther ID number.

3. They can then access our scholarship data base…. fiu.academicworks.com.

4. They would need to sign-in to the data base using their Panther ID number. They would

scroll to the MPAS/Golden Drum Scholarship. The scholars Click on it and it will take

them to the page where it tells them about the scholarship and the requirements. At the

bottom of that page they should also click in the right-hand corner to complete the

general application. They will need to upload the additional requirements for the

scholarship.

5. Once they are done completing the general application and the MPAS/Golden Drum

application and provided the additional documents they would hit the submit button.

6. Since a recommendation letter is required, the system gives them an option of an email

being sent to their recommender or them uploading the recommendation letter. The

recommendation letter must be signed, dated and on letterhead.

7. The deadline to apply is March 13, 2020 at 5pm. Since this process is done

electronically, if the student does not apply on time, the system will not allow them to

complete the application after the deadline. Please encourage them NOT to wait until

the last minute to apply.

8. We will not be accepting any hard copy applications or recommendation letters,

everything is to be uploaded to the site. The test scores and transcript information

will be linked from the student’s admission application, so they don’t have to worry about

uploading them again. But they must make sure they provided them with their admissions

application.

9. We will begin reviewing the applications in April and depending on the amount of

applications that must be reviewed, we hope to send out letters letting the students

know if they were selected no later than the second week of May. By that time they

should have been notified by admissions whether or not they have been admitted to FIU.

10. It is important that they know they must apply to FIU to apply for the scholarship or any

other scholarships listed on the fiuacademicworks site.

11. By the time we begin our review process they must have received notification from our

admissions office that they have been admitted to receive the scholarship.

12. Please encourage the students to have their English teachers review their essay.

13. Even though they can apply for both the MPAS and Golden Drum scholarship, they can

only receive one or the other NOT both.

14. Incomplete applications WILL NOT be considered. So they need to make sure they have

completed both the General and MPAS/Golden Drum scholarship applications and

submitted all required documents.

15. If a student has college credits (including dual enrollment credits) the total number

of college credits cannot exceed 24 in order for them to considered for the

MPAS/Golden Drum scholarships.

look through and see if there are any other scholarships on the site that they can apply for.

NEW!! Bottar Leone Scholarship Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming for any student. Having represented injured children for more than three decades – many

of whom have lifetime special needs – the medical malpractice and personal injury lawyers of Bottar Law, PLLC know, first-hand, that the transition for a

student with a physical or learning disability is often more difficult.

In the collegiate environment, a student with a physical or learning disability must make a number of difficult and complicated decisions, including

whether to e.g., disclose the specifics of his/her disability, request special accommodations in the classroom, or request other types of campus

assistance. In addition, paying for college can provide different challenges, as students with physical or learning disabilities may need to purchase special

equipment or hire private tutors to facilitate their collegiate learning experience. Typically, students with disabilities do not receive special financial aid

consideration from the federal government. Through the Bottar Law, PLLC Scholarship, we hope to reduce barriers to education for students with

physical or learning disabilities by providing additional financial security as they pursue their studies in college.

You may apply for FRA Education Foundation Scholarships if you are affiliated with the USN, USMC or USCG through your own service or that of your

spouse, parent, grandparent or great-grandparent. FRA members in good standing, their spouses, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are

eligible for a wider range of FRA Member Scholarships. Scholarship recipients must be U.S. citizens and be full-time students at an accredited college

and university in the United States.

Some of our scholarships have broad criteria for eligibility, while others are more specific. Here is a list of FRA's scholarships and their eligibility

NEW!! Florida Engineering Society Scholarships

The Florida Engineering Society, an organization of approximately 3,800 engineers practicing throughout the state of Florida, is pleased to offer a

scholarship program for graduating seniors interested in pursuing engineering careers. Six scholarships of $2,250 are being funded by the state

organization, with additional scholarships, in an amount to be determined, funded by our local Miami chapter.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

• Be a high school senior.

• Have been enrolled in one semester and will graduate form a FL school.

• Be a citizen of the United States at the time of application. G Have at least a 3.5 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale.

• Attain a minimum test score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or the American College Testing Program (ACT). The minimum scores,

listed on page two are used as a minimum threshold level, with actual test scores being weighted into the scoring process.

• Enroll in an engineering program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and

Technology (ABET).

• Certified transcript must be included with the application.

• Official lB & AP test score sheet must be included with the application

NROTC Scholarship Program Eligibility Requirements

The Navy adheres to strict moral, physical and academic standards. This applies to students in the NROTC program. Here is a list of some of the basic

requirements to apply for the program. You must:

• Be a U.S. citizen

• Be not less than 17 years old by September 1 of year starting college and no more than 23 on June 30 of that year

• Not have reached your 27th birthday by June 30 of the year in which your graduation and commissioning are anticipated

• Have acquired a high school graduation or equivalency certificate by August 1 of the year you plan to enter the NROTC program

• Have no moral obligations or personal convictions that prevent conscientious bearing of arms and supporting and defending the Constitution of the

United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic

• Be physically qualified by Navy standards

• Not have 30 or more semester hours or 45 or more quarter hours of college credit upon application

• STEP 1 — COLLEGE BOARD SCORE RELEASE

• Authorize the testing agency to release your scores directly to the NROTC Scholarship Program (program code 0656). No other means of

providing scores to the program is acceptable. Scores forwarded directly from the applicant or a school will not be accepted.

• The minimum SAT scores are 530 Critical Reading, 520 Math

• The minimum ACT scores are 21 Math, 22 English

• Graduates in the top 10% of their class will be considered

• Scores will be accepted no earlier than Feb. 17 and will not be accepted after December 31
