What is a sampler? When most people think of samplers, they think of cross-stitch projects featuring an alphabet and traditional motifs. But a sampler is so much more! In a nutshell, a sampler is a “sam-

pling” of different stitches or different motifs stitched on fabric to form a pat-tern or learn a particular technique.

At one time samplers were used as a learning tool to teach young girls theneedlework skills necessary for daily living, including darning, mending, andgeneral sewing, as well as ways to add decorative embroidered elements to basichousehold items. The most common decorative embroidery techniques taughtwhile working a sampler included cross-stitch, counted-thread stitches, darningstitch, and surface embroidery stitches.

In this book you will learn to work an assortment of sampler types, from colorful modern band samplers to traditional alphabet samplers, in a variety of techniques. You’ll build your stitch repertoire with each new technique you learn, much as young girls did in the past.

This book contains 24 different sampler designs that you can stitch, includ-ing smaller projects inspired by their larger and more involved counterparts.Full-size patterns are provided for the surface samplers, and detailed charts or diagrams are included for the counted-thread projects. Diagrams for all of the stitches used in the projects are provided as well, starting on page 73, and you can finish your projects using the basic finishing instructions in thefinal chapter.

So pack your workbag, select your project, and grab your floss . . . it’s time to stitch!

Stitch a classical sampler set using cross-stitch and backstitch in a Spanish lace design using variegated

red floss. The set includes a square sampler and a smallersquare design that can be finished as a scissor fob, orna-ment, or pincushion. Select one of the letters from the alphabet to use in the center of the small square to cus-tomize it for yourself or a friend.

Just a single color of floss is used, so you can easily swap another color for the red. Variegated blue, black, or a multicolored over-dyed thread would work equally well.

Materials

■ 18 x 18-inch piece of 28-count white or antique white evenweave linen for sampler

■ 6 x 6-inch piece of 28-count white or antique whitelinen for the smaller design

■ DMC 6-strand embroidery floss in color 115Variegated Red

■ Size 24 tapestry needle

This interesting sampler is not for the faint of heart andis most suitable for intermediate or advanced stitchers.

In this project, you’re counting over three threads in thefabric rather than the two threads you would normallywhen working a sampler on an evenweave fabric. Insteadof the stitches covering the three threads, a thread is leftunstitched between each cross-stitch, making it one offfrom the accompanying stitch (hence the clever name I gave this technique).

Surface embroidery stitches including stem stitch,French knots, and detached chain stitches are used for the floral sprays that enhance the alphabet. Refer to theimage showing the stitching detail when working the design if you need help placing the lettering while usingthe one-off technique.

Looking for a project that will keep you busy for a while? This cross-stitch sampler with counted-thread borders

will definitely do the trick. Although the sampler isn’t dif-ficult, it is time-consuming to create, with each ball orna-ment composed of 363 individual stitches. The projectcalls for 25 different colors of thread, so you’ll need a largeproject bag.

If you’re pressed for time, you can make the matchingpillow using just four of the lettered balls to spell NOEL,or use the balls to spell out any holiday sentiment youwish: JOY, CHEER, or WELCOME are just a few ideasfor coordinating projects.

Make a set of four seasonal samplers worked in a vari-ety of surface embroidery stitches. The four differ-

ent designs—one each for spring, winter, summer, andautumn—can each be framed, or you can use one frame

and simply change the insert with the seasons. You mightalso want to stitch the four motifs into a little wall quilt, as the motifs are made to fit an 8 x 8-inch block.

NCE THE LEARNING TOOL that helped generations of

girls master basic needlework skills, the sampler—any

project featuring a “sampling” of different stitches or

techniques—is still a great way to learn and practice

embroidery skills, as well as a creative way to add color to a room

or a fabric item. This book brings the sampler into the twenty-first

century with 16 beautiful, contemporary designs for sampler art

using cross-stitch, surface, counted-thread, and freestyle embroi-

dery (including instructions and diagrams for each technique).

Each design can be framed like a traditional sampler or finished

with a number of creative ideas for taking sampler art beyond the

wall hanging.

Cheryl Fall is the author of thirteen books, including Embroidery Basics and three titles in the popular Dummies series, and more than two thousand articles on crafts. She maintains the NeedleKnowledge.com website and was the host of the nationally distributed PBS Plus series The Creative Life. Cheryl has been designing professionally since 1986 and has been a designer for DMC Threads and J&P Coats/Anchor. She lives near Portland, Oregon.
