2.　How　Cybozu　built　itself

　How　we　came　to　use　OSS　and　how　it　benefited　users　and　Cybozu.


▐ Three　young　men　started　Cybozu　in　1997

▐ IBM　Notes,　MS　Exchange　dominated　the　groupware　market

▐ At　that　time,　IBM　Notes,　MS　Exchange　etc.　used　client-server　system　which　was　very　difficult　to　administer


▐ Lotus　Notes　users　use　a　client-side　application　to　access　Lotus　Domino　server　software.　

▐ At　that　time　in　the　market,　existing　Groupware　was　hard　to　administrate　

▐ They　used　client-server,　the　server　was　very　difficult　to　handle,　and　we　needed　to　manage　all　of　the　clients.　After　setup,　the　applications　needed　to　be　designed!


▐ To　rescue　the　system　administrators,　Cybozu　made　our　first　Groupware　product　(with　web　technologies)

▐ The　benefits　were　immediately　clear　to　the　market:– Easy　installation– Significantly　reduced　administration　effort


▐ Cybozu　introduced　software　that　solved　all　of　these　problems:– Easy　installation– Web-browser　based　system　so　only　the　server　needs　administration

– No　need　to　design　applications;　just　create　users　and　go!


▐ The　first　products　were　built　on　CyDE　(Cybozu　Development　Environment)

▐ CyDE　enabled　us　to　make　a　dead-simple　installation　process.

▐ Because　the　installation　was　so　light,　it　was　easy　to　download　over　pre-broadband　connections.

▐ We　marketed　directly　through　the　web.


▐ We　kept　growing,　and　we　came　to　a　turning　point　where　we　knew　we　had　to　advance　CyDE.


▐CyDE　platform　has　two　issue　as　follows;– ScalabilityCyDE　was　too　small　scale　to　run　the　enterprise　company.

– CustomizeCyDE　was　proprietary　platform

▐We　resolved　to　employ　OSS　in　order　to　solve　these　issues


▐We　decided　to　employee　the　OSS　technology　after　comparing　any　other　DB

▐We　considered　the　performance　of　world　wide
