    Secret Explored

    38/130

A few years ago, Alan Schoenfeld, a math professor atBerkeley, made a videotape of a woman named Renee as shewas trying to solve a math problem. Renee was in her mid-twenties, with long black hair and round Silver glasses. In thetape, she's playing with software Program designed to teachalgebra. In the figure below are a Y and an X axis. The programasks the user to type in a set of coordinates and then draws theline from those Coordinates on the screen. For example, whenshe typed in 5 on the y axis and 5 on the x axis, the computerdid this:

    38

  • 8/6/2019 Copy of Self Study Plan Updated March9pg

    39/130

At this point, I'm sure, some vague memory of your middle-schoolalgebra is coming back to you. But rest assured, you don't need toremember any of it to understand the significance of Renee'sexample. In fact, as you listen to Renee talking in the next fewparagraphs, focus not on what she's saying but rather on how she'stalking and why she's talking the way she is.The point of the computer program, which Schoenfeld created, wasto teach students about how to calculate the slope of a line.Slope, as I'm sure you remember (or, more accurately, as I'll bet youdon't remember; I certainly didn't), is rise over run. The slope of theline in our example is 1, since the rise is 5 and the run is 5. So thereis Renee. She's sitting at the keyboard, and she's trying to figure outwhat numbers to enter in order to get the computer to find out theslope of a line that is absolutely vertical, that is directlysuperimposed over the y axis.

    39

  • 8/6/2019 Copy of Self Study Plan Updated March9pg

    40/130

Now, those of you who remember your high school math will know

that this is, in fact, impossible. A vertical line has an undefined slope. Its rise is infinite: any number on the y axis starting at zero and goingon forever. It's run on the x axis, meanwhile, is zero. Infinity divided byzero is not a number. But Renee doesn't realize that what she's tryingto do can't be done. She is, rather, in the grip of what Schoenfeld callsa "glorious misconception," and the reason Schoenfeld likes to show

this particular tape is that it is a perfect demonstration of how thismisconception came to be resolved. Renee was a nurse. She wasn'tsomeone who had been particularly interested in mathematics in thepast. But she had somehow gotten hold of the software and washooked. "Now, what I want to do is make a straight line with thisformula, parallel to the y axis," she begins. Schoenfeld is sitting next toher. She looks over at him anxiously. "It's been five years since I didany of this. She starts to fiddle with the program, typing in differentnumbers .

    40

  • 8/6/2019 Copy of Self Study Plan Updated March9pg

    41/130

"Now if I change the slope that way...minus 1 . .. now what I mean todo is make the line go straight. As she types in numbers, the line onthe screen changes. "Oops. That's not going to do it. She lookspuzzled. "What are you trying to do?" Schoenfeld asks."What I'm trying to do is make a straight line parallel to the y axis. What do I need to do here? I think what I need to do is change this alittle bit." She points at the place where the number for the y axis is."That was something I discovered. That when you go from 1 to 2,there was a rather big change. But now if you get way up there youhave to keep changing. This is Renee's glorious misconception. She's noticed the higher she makes the y axis coordinate, the steeperthe line gets. So she thinks the key to making a vertical line is just

making the y axis coordinate large enough. "I guess 12 or even 13could do it. Maybe even as much as 15. She frowns. She andSchoenfeld go back and forth.

    41

  • 8/6/2019 Copy of Self Study Plan Updated March9pg

    42/130

She asks him questions. He prods her gently in the right direction.

She keeps trying and trying, one approach after another. At onepoint, she types in 20. The line gets a little bit steeper .

She types in 40. The line gets steeper still.

    42

  • 8/6/2019 Copy of Self Study Plan Updated March9pg

    43/130

"I see that there is a relationship there. But as to why, it doesn't seemto make sense to me What if I do 80? If 40 gets me halfway, then 80should get me all the way to the y axis. So let's just see whathappens. She types in 80. The line is steeper. But it's still not totallyvertical .

"Ohhh. It's infinity, isn't it? It's never going to get there." Renee isclose. But then she reverts to her original misconception. "So what

do I need? 100? Every time you double the number, you gethalfway to the y axis. But it never gets there... She types in 100."It's closer. But not quite there yet.

    43

  • 8/6/2019 Copy of Self Study Plan Updated March9pg

    44/130

She starts to think out loud. It's obvious she's on the verge of

figuring something out. "Well, I knew this, though... but... I knewthat. For each one up, it goes that many over. I'm still somewhatconfused as to why... She pauses, squinting at the screen. "I'mgetting confused. It's a tenth of the way to the one. But I don't want itto be... And then she sees it. "Oh! It's any number up, and zeroover. It's any number divided by zero!" Her face lights up. "A vertical

line is anything divided by zero and that's an undefined number.Ohhh. Okay. Now I see. The slope of a vertical line is undefined.Ahhhh. That means something now. I won't forget that!"

    End of Experiment

Over the course of his career, Schoenfeld has videotapedcountless students as they worked on math problems. But theRenee tape is one of his favorites because of how beautifully itillustrates what he considers to be the secret to learningmathematics.

    44

  • 8/6/2019 Copy of Self Study Plan Updated March9pg

    45/130

Twenty-two minutes pass from the moment Renee begins playingwith the computer program to the moment she says, "Ahhhh. Thatmeans something now." That's a long time. "This is eighth-grademathematics, Schoenfeld said. " If I put the average eighthgrader in the same position as Renee, I'm guessing that after thefirst few attempts, they would have said, I don't get it. I need youto explain it.' " Schoenfeld once asked a group of high school

students how long they would work on a homework questionbefore they concluded it was too hard for them ever to solve.Their answers ranged from thirty seconds to five minutes, with theaverage answer two minutes. But Renee persists. Sheexperiments. She goes back over the same issues time andagain.

She thinks out loud. She keeps going and going. She simplywon't give up. She knows on some vague level that there issomething wrong with her theory about how to draw a verticalline, and she won't stop until she's absolutely sure she has itright. Renee wasn't a math natural..

    45

  • 8/6/2019 Copy of Self Study Plan Updated March9pg

    46/130

Abstract concepts like "slope" and "undefined" clearly didn't comeeasily to her. But Schoenfeld could not have found her moreimpressive."There's a will to make sense that drives what shedoes," Schoenfeld says. "She wouldn't accept a superficial'Yeah, you're right' and walk away. That's not who she is. And that'sreally unusual." He rewound the tape and pointed to a momentwhen Renee reacted with genuine surprise to something on thescreen. "Look," he said. "She does a double take. Many studentswould just let that fly by. Instead, she thought, 'That doesn't jibe withwhatever I'm thinking. I don't get it. That's important. I want anexplanation.' And when she finally gets the explanation, shesays, 'Yeah, that fits.' At Berkeley, Schoenfeld teaches a course onproblem solving, the entire point of which, he says, is to get hisstudents to unlearn the mathematical habits they picked up on theway to university. "I pick a problem that I don't know how to solve,"he says. "I tell my students, 'You're going to have a two-week take-home exam. I know your habits.

You're going to do nothing for the first week and start it next

week, and I want to warn you now: If you only spend oneweek on this, you're not going to solve it. If, on the otherhand, you start working the day I give you the midterm, you'llbe frustrated. You'll come to me and say, 'It's impossible.' I'lltell you, Keep working, and by week two, you'll find you'llmake significant progress. We sometimes think of beinggood at mathematics as an innate ability. You either have "it"or you don't.

However Math's is not very different from reasoning(Both are logical)

Before you give up on Math's consider the followingfacts

To clear the BBS entrance you cana) Attempt as low as only 50% of the Math's question.b) Attempt only the easy questions and leave every

    WHAT DOES PERCENTILE MEANS ?

90 %ile Means your score is better than 90% students in the test

    How to interpret the percentiles?

First 2 mocks- Percentiles are not too indicative. These reflectbroadly 3 different levels3 rd Mock onwards- Percentiles are roughly indicative ofpossible college for you.

    Step 1-Expecta lowscore

If you try to post a big score your teamwould be bowled out soon.

Similarly if you try and attempt questionsfast you might not be able to solve many.

    Step2-

    Leavea lot ofballs

Pick only easy balls without beingtensed.

Similarly you have to be comfortablethat the number of attempts would be

    low.

Let us take a cricketing corollary. How to Play Cricket on a tough bouncy track

    59/130

    Step 3-Havedifferent

    Approach todifficult balls

Do not attempt too many aggressive shots.Similarly you must be very slow and gradual in

    attempting tough questions :

    A toughquestion is

    usually multistep.

2 to 3 step questions are easy and fast tosolve. Multi step question have to be

solved patiently and step by stepTake multi step approach- When you arenot able to crack a tough question. Come

back to it after your paper is complete.

This is one of the mysteries of subconscious mind. When weget tired and cant figure out a solution. Solution strikes us

immediately when we look at the question after a breakTherefore a tough paper you realize is a test of both aptitude

    and temperament.59

A Commerce students (especially those not at EduMentor) don't study as

much for Entrance (In comparison to boards ). So your rank atEduMentor is not indicative of your actual rank.

B Complacency of good performers would mean top rankers might loosetheir top ranks.

    C

Performance in initial mocks is dependent less on preparation and moreon natural talent. The role of natural talent would diminish with time. If

you keep studying hard you would cover up for difference in talent.

    Consider this.

Our Experience tells us that you cant predict performance till even the lastweek before exams. So toppers stay sharp. Emerging students must study till last week asdifference is going to get created in last few weeks.
