SafeguardingWe place great importance inensuring the care, safety and wellbeing of all our children. All staffhave received relevant training insafeguarding and all the necessarysafeguarding checks are in place.

The school and Children's Centrehave a Child Protection Policy andProcedures in place in accordancewith the local authority and DFEguidance. A copy of these areavailable on request.

CurriculumChildren from birth to 5 follow theEarly Years Foundation Stagecurriculum which is based onpractical hands on experiences todevelop the whole child. This

spelling and handwriting skills, andtheir use of grammar andpunctuation.

In Maths we place emphasis onteaching mental and writtenmethods of calculation, includinglearning number facts such asmultiplication tables. We also attachimportance to using and applyingmathematical skills and concepts toother subjects and to real lifesituations.

In Science children develop theirknowledge and understanding ofscientific processes. They areencouraged to explore andinvestigate in a range of practicalscientific activities.

The Foundation Subjects are ;- History Geography Art Music PE Design Technology.

Where appropriate these are taughtas part of a cross curricular theme.By working in this way we aim todevelop children’s creativity, makinglearning relevant, interesting andenjoyable.

CurriculumTargetsWe set specific curriculum targetseach half term for every child inEnglish and Maths and track theirprogress on these targets. We senddetails of these home so that youcan help your child with them.

TrackingProgressWe look very closely at each child’sassessment results and use these setnew challenging targets to ensureevery child is enabled to do as wellas they can. We track and monitoreach child’s progress at least once aterm and put in extra support if it isneeded to ensure they meet theirtargets.

Pupil Progress& AssessmentEvery parent wants the very best fortheir child. We are committed toworking with you to make sure yourchild has every opportunity toachieve their full potential whilstthey are at our school.

InvolvingParentsWe consult regularly with parents.We have a parents’ evening inOctober when you are invited tocome in and speak with your child’steacher about their progress. Justbefore Easter we send you adetailed written report. At the endof the summer term we hold asecond parents’ evening and giveyou written details of your child’send of year assessments. If at anyother time either home or schoolhas any concerns then additionalmeetings can be arranged.

Special NeedsOur school has a strong commitmentto Inclusion and we work hard toensure all children can have accessto all aspects of the life and work ofour school. We have a lot ofexperience of successfully workingwith children with a variety of needsand we have developed a widerange of staff expertise.

CelebratingSuccess We strongly believe that successbreeds success. It is important thatall achievements are celebrated andthat we build up each child’s selfesteem, so that every child has apositive view of themselves.

Each half term we have a series ofcups which are awarded forEndeavour, Cheerful Enthusiasm,SEAL cup for good social skills, cupsfor being a good friend and beinghelpful, and for good lunchtimebehaviour.

Healthy EatingWe are very proud of our schoolmeals service, which the school runsindependently of Lancashire CountyCouncil. Mrs Aspinall, our cook,provides a huge choice of healthyfood each day and the majority ofour pupils have a school lunch.

As well as the daily choices, childrencan also choose additional itemsfrom our salad and fruit bar andthere is always fresh home bakedbread available. Children can choosemilk shake, fruit juice or water andcan have as many top ups as theywish.

We use a range of positive rewardsincluding stickers and we have ahouse system, where children arerewarded with house points.

Each week we hold a celebrationassembly to which parents andcarers are invited. Special mentioncertificates are given out for goodwork, sensible behaviour, and goodsocial skills. When children achieve100 house points this is celebratedand a special certificate awarded.

Children in Key Stage 1 have schoolmilk and fruit at break time.

In Key stage 2 we have a healthytuck shop which the children helpto run, which sells fruit, yoghurts,milk shake and fruit juice.

The school kitchen provides all thefood for the out of school careclubs, from healthy breakfasts toafter school snacks.

The school kitchen was the first inChorley to win the prestigiousRecipe for Success Award.

EarringsLancashire County Council P.E.Advisers warn against the wearingof any form of earrings or ear-studsfor P.E. or games. Children arevulnerable to serious injury ifearrings or studs are worn.Therefore all earrings must beremoved for PE and games. Wecannot take responsibility for anylost items of jewellery.

We advise against pierced ears, butif you do decide to go ahead, weask that you only have them done atthe beginning of the six weeksummer holiday to give time for thewound to heal safely.

The Swimming Teachers do notallow the wearing of earrings underany circumstances. Any child with averruca will need to wear a verrucasock available from most chemistsor withdraw from swimminglessons.

SwimmingSome classes attend swimminglessons at the Chorley pool.Children will need to bring aswimming costume, swimming cap(boys and girls) and a towel onBaths day. We sell caps in school.

A unique feature of our school isour commitment to providing awide range of support to childrenand families from birth to when thechildren transfer to High School atage 11.

Child CareWe have a range of child careoptions on site and close links to theChild Care Information Service andParent Direct, which aim to giveparents the information they needto juggle the demands of family andwork. The Children's Centre supportsthe work of the local Childminders.

Health LinksThere are close links with health,providing activities such as antenatal booking in sessions, supportfor Breastfeeding, baby massage,drop in clinics, parenting classes,Smoking Cessation, Optometryservices, some Speech and Languagetherapy here in our Centre. This isreal help to parents, as the servicesare here in the community, not oneor two bus rides away.

Medicines ADMINISTRATION OFMEDICATION IN SCHOOL

Children with medicalconditionsAs part of our inclusion policy, wewill make the appropriatearrangements for any child with anongoing medical condition whichrequires regular medication. Parentswould need to make anappointment to see Mrs. Stallard tolook at how the child’s needs couldbe met.

Working parentsAs a general rule, medication is notroutinely administered in school, asin most cases parents can make

ComplaintsProcedureAt school we make many decisionsevery day. We try hard to do ourbest for all our pupils. We like toknow when things are going well,but we also want parents to tell usabout their worries, concerns orcomplaints as soon as possible. It ismuch easier for us to sort out arecent problem than something thathappened some time ago.

Some Speech Therapy sessions aredelivered from the Children’sCentre, there is a weekly SmokingCessation clinic, the Health Visitorsrun drop in surgeries and a SpecialNeeds group meets each week toinclude and support parents andchildren with particular needs.

Through the Children’s Centre wehave close links with the Child CareInformation Service and ParentDirect which offer a range ofsupport to parents helping you tojuggle the demands of family andwork. As well as child careinformation, the service coversmaternity and paternity rights,

In the summer term we invite prenursery children to come intoNursery for a series of sessions.Parents are invited to stay for aslong as they feel will help theirchild. This helps your child becomefamiliar with the nursery staff, thesetting and with some of theactivities and routines of nursery.

Children already in nursery visitreception class during the summerterm as part of their induction intoschool. Children new to school willhave the opportunity for a homevisit and some induction visits toreception class.
