Maria Luisa Pelayo, 90, Superior/Tucson, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, Oct. 20, 2014. Maria was born on Oct. 9, 1924, in Phoenix, Ariz. and raised in Nogales, Sonora, Mex. She later moved to Superior with her husband, Manuel, and family. Maria was a diligent prayer warrior and a dedicated Bible reader who memorized countless scriptures. She also enjoyed music and singing, embroidering,

crocheting, cooking, shopping, and especially family gatherings. She touched many lives with her unwavering faith, unquenchable joy and unconditional love. She is survived by her five children: Cecilia Hernandez, Tempe; Yolanda Gonzales, Mesa; Manuel (Helen) Pelayo, Tempe; Heidi Pelayo, Superior; Cindy (Frank) Florez, Tucson; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Benny Nuñez, San Pedro, Calif. Annie was a loving and committed mother, sister, and friend, always compassionate, fun loving, and putting others before herself. She had the most generous loving heart and influenced many lives with her unconditional embrace. Her family and friends will always be grateful for the gift of her life. Survived by her loving daughter, Lori Ann and Manny Sze; brother, Albert Jimenez, and sisters, Patty DaRunga and Becky Delgado. AIMS in Arizona is the acronym for Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards. AIMS is not just important for SUSD it is important for all school districts throughout the state. Many people look at AIMS testing as a hassle or just another hurdle put in the education process in the state, however, it can be an invaluable tool to gauge progress and address the needs of our educational system. It is a program implemented and administered by the Arizona Department of Education. Community members and parents have inquired about the AIMS testing asking what it is for and why is it necessary. At a recent meeting with Arlynn Godinez she explained in detail

what the AIMS testing does and how it helps with monitoring the schools needs. Godinez said, “I would make the generalization that overall in reading K-12, I would venture to say our students consistently scored comparatively to the county. Reading is definitely an area of strength in our district. The area’s where we continue to struggle is math and science. About fourth grade through 10th grade as these were the most recently tested.” Godinez explained, “This past year we saw growth particularly at the elementary school in grades third and fifth. The jr. high fell again and we saw a slight increase in the math scores, but our jr. high has struggled more than any of the other two sites. That is really the area of focus. Our high school really grew this year particularly in the area of math and writing, as a result of that our high school went from a grade of a C to a B. The jr.

high, because it has struggled and remained a D it has been labeled priority, which in terms of that state it is being closely watched by the state and it is impairative that we improve. The state sends a people out to monitor the school about three times during a semester it requires a significant amount of paperwork on Superior Unified School District’s staff. There is a greater presence by the state because typically the state doesn’t send anyone in at all, so now we will have people on campus once or twice every semester that is true on both sites JFK and the jr. high. When you look at degrees of achievement, you have priorities which means we are close to failing and something needs to be done so the state steps in to oversee the school. We all need to work harder.”

“The state looks at growth when they are looking at giving schools labels they want to see kids as they progress educationally, they want to see kids on the upward projection they want to see kids increasing in scores. The state wants to know and see that the kids are continuing to make growth as they progress or do we have declines,” Godinez added.

Superintendent Patrick O’Donnell said, “The biggest thing is some grade levels we aren’t seeing any growth, even though they were really good to that point and then all of a sudden they bottomed out and then after that they started to grow again.” Godinez presented many charts about the Superior School Distrct. This is information from one of the

charts: The Superior School third graders will be the graduating class of 2019. The SUSD third graders are being used as our benchmark and we will follow them from 2010 through 2014 as our example. Starting in 2010 the third graders math percentile was 71, the reading percentile was 82. For the year 2011 the now fourth graders math percentile was 55 and the reading percentile was 64. For the year 2012 the now fifth graders math percentile is 38 and the reading percentile was 48. For the year 2013 the now sixth graders math percentile was 60 and the reading percentile was 80. For the year 2014 the now seventh graders the math percentile is 40 and the reading percentile is 68. These numbers are used to gauge the progress among the schools and compare them with other districts throughout the state and to help implement new teaching methods that will help our children progress. Update on EPA investigation of ASARCO Hayden Plant Site meeting held

The EPA held hearings in Hayden last week to help inform the public about the new safety requirements being implemented and how they will affect local employer Asarco.

Public meetings were held on Oct. 21 and 22 in Hayden to update the public on the investigation by the Environ-mental Protection Agency (EPA) of the ASARCO Hayden Plant Site. The investigation of the industrial areas of the site has been on going for a year. The EPA has been monitor-ing and sampling air, soil and water in the area to determine the nature and extent of contamination of the environ-ment. About 35 people attended the meeting including mem-bers of ASARCO, EPA, Ari-zona Department of Health Services (ADHS), Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), Agency for

Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) as well as Hayden/Winkelman resi-dents. Pete Rios, Pinal County Supervisor for district one and Ken Montoya representing Congresswoman Ann Kirkpat-rick’s office also attended. John Hillenbrand, EPA Re-medial Project manager pro-vided the presentation on the investigation updates. There was a discussion session dur-ing and after the presentation.

Printed information on the updates and proposed testing for blood lead and urine ar-senic in Hayden and Winkel-man was made available. Ben Gerhardstein, ATSDR gave the presentation on the planned lead and arsenic testing. Due to findings of arsenic and lead in levels above the EPA stan-dards, free testing of blood and urine for arsenic and lead is being offered to children and pregnant women. (see

article on free testing) Air monitoring systems have been placed in and around residential areas near the plant site. They have mea-sured the air quality for the past year and it has shown that arsenic, lead and cad-mium are present in amounts above the EPA’s safety levels. levels of concentration of the metals. The air monitoring will continue for another year. Soil sampling was conducted in non-residen-tial areas of the industrial plant around the smelter and concentrator and outlying natural areas. High concentrates of the metal have been confirmed in the Hayden plant and former Ken-necott concentrator. Concentrations of the met-als have been found in outlying non-residential areas including arroyos in the area. Hillenbrand said parents should keep their children from playing in those areas. The drinking water supply wells of Hayden/Winkelman have been monitored and sampled and found to meet EPA drinking water quality standards. Storm water, ground water and river water has been sampled. Stormwater samples collected from the Kennecott wash area showed arsenic, copper and lead greater than EPA standards in the runoff. Pockets of groundwater have showed levels of metals above the drink-ing water standards. More testing of river water sampling will be conducted. Most of the soil and water data has been col-lected and the air sampling will continue for another year. Once all the data is analyzed and

information is collected, options for clean up will be determined and presented to the public at a meeting for comment. This should occur in early 2016. After plans are completed for the clean up the clean up of the site will begin. In-formation repositories for community members have been established at the Hayden Public Li-brary and the Arthur E. The Superior Optimist Club held its second annual Halloween Brunch at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort. Funds raised from the brunch will benefit the Miracle on Main St. event. This year the club is raising additional funds to install improved electrical infrastructure at the Besich Park. The improved infrastructure will allow for the park to have year round lighting and improved holiday lighting displays. Those wishing to donate to the lighting project and park improvements should contact JoAnn Besich at 520-827-0592. The 11th annual Miracle on Main St. Holiday Light Parade and Festival will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014. The event will begin downtown at 4 p.m. with train rides and small amusements for the kids. The ninth-ranked Panthers fell behind early in their first playoff game appearance since 2011, trailing eighth-ranked Glendale Prep by two touchdowns in the first quarter. But they didn’t let the early deficit stop them as they came from behind to defeat the Griffins, 66 – 54. Last Saturday’s win was only the second playoff victory for the Panthers since 1998. The 2011 team also won a first round playoff game. “In a playoff game, with a lot of underclassmen, getting down early can be detrimental for many teams,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer said after the game. “But not these kids.” The Panthers got themselves back in the game with a couple of defensive stops and some quick scores. After trailing by four points at the end of the first quarter they outscored the Griffins in the second quarter to take the lead at halftime, 38 – 32. As he has all season, sophomore quarterback Nicolaus Cruz led the Panthers’ offensive attack, throwing for five touchdowns and rushing for three more. He finished the game with 526 total offensive yards, including 357 passing and 169 rushing. Cruz threw touchdown passes to Matthew Zavala, Elias Olmos, Michael Salazar (2), and Austin Navarrette. Sophomore running back Edgar Pacheco rushed for a touchdown. The defense recovered four fumbles, giving the offense extra possessions which helped them outscore the Griffins in the second half, 28 – 22.

A quarter-final matchup at undefeated and top-ranked Bagdad this Saturday.

“We are going to work extremely hard this week to prepare for the defending state champions,” Palmer said. “Our kids are excited to prove what we can do, what we have worked so hard for all year.” “No better stage then against the top ranked team in the state.” The Panthers don’t seem to be intimidated by the Sultans. And sometimes that’s half the battle; avoiding defeat before even getting on the field. The offense has shown it can produce championship caliber results.

The defense will need to show the same, starting this week. “We still have not played our best game,” Palmer said. “We need to come out and play with confidence and determination.” “I can guarantee that these kids will be prepared, motivated, and will leave it all on the field this week.” This week would be a good time for the Panthers to play their best game of the season. Their third playoff win since 1998 awaits them if they do.

The Superior Fire Department held their annual open house in conjunction with fire safety month. The event featured free food, tours of the station, a bouncy castle and fire prevention education for students. The Pinal County fire house was also on site, youth really enjoy participating in the fire simulator. The evening closed with a fly in by the Air Evac Helicopter. Those in attendance were able to sit inside the helicopter. The event was co-sponsored by the Superior Substance Abuse Coalition, Air Evac 7 and the Red Bear Outfitters.

Resolution Copper Mining is proud to make our home in the Town of Superior. RCM has contributed more than $200,000 in donations and in-kind support to 18 organizations in Superior through the first half of 2014:

• RCM helped the Superior Chamber of Commerce complete renovations to their new home on Main St. in downtown Superior.

• RCM and our contractor Sundt were proud to support the Town of Superior Independence Day Celebration.

• RCM provided funding to the Superior Little League to help defray costs of field maintenance and also provided in-kind support to help improve the electrical system at the ball field.

• Since 2012, RCM has supported Superior Unified School District Professional Development workshops and training for Superior teachers to help enhance their skills.

• Since 2009, RCM has supported Superior Unified School District in sponsoring the FIRST LEGO and FIRST Robotics programs that are designed to increase STEM knowledge and skills.

• Since 2008, our Emergency Services Agreement with the Town of Superior has helped deliver infrastructure improvements and provide police, fire suppression and ambulance services.
