Fall 2010

It has been a big year for us in Stanford Blood Center’s Recruitment depart-ment. With the implementation of eDonor (online scheduling software),

the Donor Cup competition, and some of our most successful blood drives to date, we have continued to build community partnerships while collecting more blood than ever. And we have YOU to thank for that! With all the new and exciting changes we thought it would be a great opportunity to launch Coordinator Connection—a newsletter to help us inter-act with, inform, and thank our Blood Drive Coordinators. We know for many of you the role of Blood Drive Coordinator is a responsibility you take on in addition to your job, community or church involvement, and your commitment to helping others is truly appreciated. As Account Managers, it’s our responsibility to keep you informed and educated and to assist in making each drive as successful as possible. We’re available to work with you individually to make your blood drive a success. Please take time to read over our first issue, checking out “What’s New” to learn about a friendly competition taking place right now between tech companies in the Silicon Valley. The “In the Spotlight” section will showcase an outstanding blood drive and coordinator, and “By the Numbers” will shed some light on the impact your blood drives have in our community. Over the summer I had the chance to work with the Hernandez fam-ily on a memorial blood drive for their daughter Ava who passed in 2008. I was able to spend the whole day with their friends and family. Everyone I encountered that day was so eager to donate their precious blood and help someone in need. I left the blood drive feeling inspired, energized and more connected to my job than ever before. I hope reading Coordinator Connec-tion will inspire each of you in the same way.

Mary Scranton, Medtronic“I send out reminder e-mails and on the day of the drive I even walk through the buildings and do a face to face reminder.”

Jennifer Robinson, BD Biosciences“Invite Stanford Blood Center to our Health Fair.”

Patty Brooks, Strawberry Park Neighborhood Association“We’ll contact the local church to help advertise, hang fliers in local coffee shops and send out emails to neighbor-hood associations. Also advertise on “Yahoo Group” in the vicinity of the drive and ask elementary schools to send flyers home with children for parents.”

We asked, you answered: When your appointments are fewer than expected, what are some things you do to increase them?

Blood drive: Ava’s Blood DriveIn July, we held the second annual “Ava’s Blood Drive” in San Jose. In honor of their daughter, Ava, who lost her bat-tle with cancer just before her fourth birthday, the Hernan-dez family hosted SBC’s first ever “front-yard blood drive” with our bloodmobile last summer. It was a very successful drive—we collected 71 units with one bloodmobile. This year, the Hernandez family wanted us to bring two buses, as they had increased the number of projected donors to 100! Without skipping a beat, family, friends, neighbors and the community came together to support the Hernandez family. They surpassed their goal and collected 110 units in one day. The family is already looking forward to next year’s drive and planning to fill three buses!

Coordinator: Helen Jespersen This year Helen Jespersen is celebrating her 14th year as a Stanford Blood Center blood drive coor-dinator. Helen has a great track record for bringing in donors—her record high for a blood drive is 221 donors (in 2002). Helen organizes four blood drives at three different Ap-plied Materials locations throughout the year. She always provides wonderful lunches for Stanford Blood Center staff and volunteers, including freshly baked goods! She also takes the time to decorate the room for each drive to make donors feel welcome. Since their first Stanford Blood Center drive back in 1998, together, Helen and Applied Materials have collected approximately 3,100 units of whole blood, and about 200 double red cell donations. Helen is always attentive to donors and looking for new and creative ways of running successful blood drives.

Bring your A game. (Or your B, AB, or O game.)From the Winter Olympics in Vancouver to the World Cup in South Africa, this year there have been winners and losers, champions and runners-up. Stanford Blood Center wanted to get our donors in on the action, except our competition was designed so that everyone would end up a winner—especially local patients. So early this year we rolled out the 2010 Donor Cup, a blood drive competition among tech companies. We se-lected our top 26 tech blood drive locations who scheduled at least four blood drives per year. All year long, donors compete for their companies in areas like “Most Units”, “Most First Time Donors,” and “Projection Accuracy”. Do-nors at these drives receive special promo items, including T-shirts, football tickets, and water bottles. After the final quarter of 2010 we will compile all the statistics and Donor Cup winners will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by Stanford Blood Center. While our donors have fun competing with their indus-try rivals each quarter, it’s the patients in our hospitals who truly are the winners. In just two quarters this year, Donor Cup donors have donated 3,428 units of blood for local patients! Stay tuned for more info about Donor Cup.

eDonorWe are always identifying ways to improve our donor recruitment program. This past year, Stanford Blood Center implemented a new online recruitment technology called eDonor. Many of you have already become familiar with a number of the advantages eDonor offers you as a Blood Drive Coordinator: accessibility to donors who have donated on your drives, the ability to e-mail donors, and a compre-hensive Blood Drive Coordinator Loyalty Program. Donors still have the ability to schedule mobile drive appointments, but now they have improved access to their donation history and wellness information, plus they can also schedule appointments for our fixed sites. We are working on identifying areas in eDonor to further develop and improve based on feedback from do-nors and drive coordinators—two popular suggestions for improvement are the appointment search function and the log-in process. We are also working with eDonor to create reports which will offer you data about the performance of your past blood drives. It is our goal to supply you with the tools you need to be a successful Blood Drive Coordinator; eDonor is just one of these. For more information about eDonor, please contact your Account Manager today.
