LETTER FROM FRANK FIELDMP & COOL EARTH FOUNDER

I have always been concerned with child poverty, healthcare, and the environment. That’s why in 2007 I co-founded Cool Earth, which works with indigenous villages to prevent the rapid rainforest destruction occurring throughout the world.

The Rt Hon Frank Field, MP for Birkenhead

The main driver of deforestation is not global demand for palm oil, soy and timber, it’s poverty. Which is why Cool Earth focuses on addressing the drivers of degradation at the community level. By improving livelihood development, education and healthcare, Cool Earth has now placed more rainforest under the 24/7 protection of indigenous groups than any other NGO or government.

Our 118 village partners are in control of over 500,000 acres of forest that would otherwise have been cleared. Five million acres of further forest are now inaccessible to loggers. Add to this the 130 million tonnes of CO2

emissions prevented, along with the 80 endangered species protected, and I think we can safely say that Cool Earth has become a success story.

Our success is down to a committed group of supporters who champion our work and enable us to grow. We hope you’d like to become part of the best chance we have to save the world’s remaining rainforests.

VIVIENNE WESTWOODFASHION DESIGNER AND ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNER

Dame Vivienne Westwood has been Cool Earth’s most committed supporter for more than four years.

to Lily Cole and Stella Tennant, not to mention Stephen Fry - and has dedicated two of her fashion shows to Cool Earth.

In 2013, Vivienne and her husband Andreas travelled to Peru with The Times to stay in the project that they funded. The visit prompted Vivienne to lobby the Peruvian government on their Forestry Programme.

Cool Earth has never had a more hands on supporter. Vivienne Westwood’s zeal for rainforest protection is incomparable. She wants to understand and be involved in every stage of saving the rainforest and as such is the most effective ambassador we could hope for.

After researching the most effective way of fighting climate change Vivienne came to the conclusion that it was Cool Earth, and has since donated over £1.35 million to our projects.

She’s galvanised her friends to join the cause - from Kate Moss and Sadie Frost

OVO ENERGYSTRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Cool Earth and OVO Energy have been working together for eight years to put the people who depend on rainforest in charge of rainforest.

OVO’s support has been key to the implementation of Cool Earth’s work. They’ve helped to improve healthcare through the installation of medical outposts, and supported income generation by funding the development of cacao and coffee growing projects.

As well as integrating the partnership into their communications strategy, OVO has engaged staff with trips to visit Cool Earth’s projects to see the difference they’re making first-hand.

A commitment to protecting the environment is in OVO’s DNA and is fundamental to how the business has grown. The partnership with Cool Earth has been central to their corporate strategy from the start.

By protecting an acre of rainforest for every customer, OVO has supported one of the highest impact conservation programmes anywhere in the world.

So far the partnership has protected over 100,000 acres of rainforest in the Ene Valley in Peru.

AS AN ENERGY SUPPLIER, WE REALLY HAD TO THINK ABOUT OUR EFFECT ON THE PLANET. SO WHAT OVO ENERGY IS DOING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COOL EARTH IS HARNESSING THE POWER OF OUR CUSTOMERS AND USING IT TO MAKE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR ENVIRONMENT THAT WE COULD FIND. WILL OUR CUSTOMERS APPROVE OF THEIR SAVED RAINFOREST? WE THINK SO. ”

M&SA CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP

The partnership with Cool Earth is helping M&S to deliver sector-wide change and is making a big impact in our projects.

Marks and Spencer know there’s no Plan B. Having achieved their major aim of making their UK business carbon neutral, M&S introduced Plan A 2020, which consists of 100 commitments. Their ultimate goal is to become the world’s most sustainable major retailer.

So far the partnership has protected 3,000 acres of rainforest, with a goal of 5,000 acres by 2016.

This will protect 1.2 million trees and lock in 1.3 million tonnes of CO2

Plan A is at the heart of M&S’s plans to become a sustainable, international, multi-channel retailer. It’s become a vital part of how they run their business, as well as helping them to maintain high levels of customer trust and employee engagement.

LIKE COOL EARTH, WE BELIEVE IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO SAVE THE WORLD’S RAINFOREST. THAT’S WHY WE’VE COMMITTED TO PROTECT 5,000 ACRES OF RAINFOREST OVER THREE YEARS, TIPPING THE BALANCE AWAY FROM CLEARING FOREST FOR SOYA, RANCHING AND PLANTATIONS AND GIVING INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES CONTROL OVER THEIR FOREST.”

FIONA WHEATLEY Sustainable Business Manager, M&S

BROTHERA CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP

Brother’s Eco-Rewards initiative encourages customers throughout Europe to use a free return and recycle scheme for ink and toner cartridges. In return, Brother protects trees in the Peruvian rainforest through Cool Earth.

Brother Japan’s Click to Donate campaign let anyone click once a day to support their chosen environmental cause. For each click Brother donated to support environmental conservation activities throughout the world.

As well as supporting Cool Earth’s Ashaninka project in Peru, Brother has recently singlehandedly helped fund the development of our new project in Papua New Guinea, the first for Cool Earth in this region of the world.

Cool Earth brought the partnership to life by providing effective tools to communicate the huge impact both the Eco-Rewards incentive and Click to Donate campaign are making.

Cool Earth has worked side by side with Brother International since 2009 as part of Brother’s on-going commitment to the environment.

Working together since 2010, health insurer Medicash is one of Cool Earth’s leading partners.

MEDICASHA BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP

Medicash understand it’s vital to be aware of their impact on the environment. Working alongside Cool Earth, they have protected enough rainforest in the last five years to cover their carbon emissions ten times over.

Medicash are always looking to further their impact and support of Cool Earth. They are now encouraging customers to sign up for electronic policy documents as part of a new PlusPoints green incentive. Customers signing up receive points that can be used to protect rainforest.

Over the last five years Medicash has protected 572 acres of rainforest.

Their continued support of Cool Earth’s Ashaninka project in Peru has included investment in classroom equipment and solar power.

In 2013 Medicash supported the Saving Rainforest Lives campaign to equip each village in Cool Earth’s Ashaninka Project in Peru with a medical outpost.

Keeping closely in line with Medicash’s long-term environmental goals, Cool Earth has been able to build on key relationships and experience to take the partnership from strength to strength.

12

AS A SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE ORGANISATION, WITH A HISTORY OF CHARITABLE ENGAGEMENT, WE’VE WORKED HARD TO REDUCE OUR IMPACT. GIVING FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO COOL EARTH EACH YEAR ENSURES WE ARE HELPING TO PROTECT THE RAINFOREST FOR THE FUTURE. FOR ALL OF OUR FUTURES.”
