The New Zealand Blood Service is ap-pealing for the community to head along and donate blood at a local drive next week.

Next Thursday, a blood drive will be held at the ASB Centre in Kilbirnie and the New Zealand Blood Service are hoping for at least 60 donors to attend on the day.

Nicola Binns from the New Zealand Blood Service said this was the fi rst time there had been a blood drive in Kilbirnie for more than 10 years.

She said this was because there had not

been enough support at previous drives held in the area.

“We are hoping that with all the extra busi-ness in the area now, it will be a success.”

The blood drive was organised after local business owner, Terry Binding from Nailed It, approached them, Nicola said.

“Terry has delivered fl yers to all Kilbirnie businesses and has been a great support. But we still really need support from all local businesses in Miramar and surrounding suburbs.”

With its helicopter rides, live entertainment and bumper ball soccer, the Owhiro Bay Country Fair enjoys a reputation for being a lively day.

The annual fair is a regular and popular spring fixture on the south coast and this year, one of the food stalls will be helmed by two award winning executive chefs from popular Wellington restaurants.

MacLean Fraser from Artisan Dining House at the Bolton Hotel and Regnar Christensen from Ortega Fish Shack and Bar will be cooking up a storm on the big day.

With the exact menus yet to be revealed, the community is abuzz with discussion about what dishes will be on offer.

However, the chefs have hinted there is a good chance vermicelli noodle salad with roast pork will be on the menu.

Fair co-ordinator, Emma De-breceny, said MacLean and Reg-nar have cooked in prestigious restaurants and won numerous awards all around the world.

“We’re thrilled that they’re bringing their expertise to the

Owhiro Bay Country Fair.” The fair enjoys strong local

support with a large contingent of parents and helpers from the Owhiro Bay Learning Com-munity bringing their talents and putting in many hours of hard work to ensure a great day is had by all.

Owhiro Bay Kindergarten head teacher Sharryn Mount-ford-Gibbs said visitors could also expect a few “local celeb-rities” to appear on the day.Principal of Owhiro Bay School, Tineke Giddy, said organisers tried try to balance their aim of fundraising with the aim of creating a great day out.

“There will be numerous other stalls on the day including heli-copter rides and a fantastic silent auction thanks to the generosity of many Wellington businesses.”

This year’s fair proceeds will be used to upgrade the school's and kindy's computers and iPads so the students have the latest technology at their fi ngertips. The Owhiro Bay Country Fair is from 10.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday November 22 at Owhiro Bay School, Happy Valley Road.

Families benefi t from curtain bankAnother 520 Wellington families

have warmer, healthier homes thanks to Sustainability Trust’s curtain bank.

The Wellington Curtain Bank has provided free, fi tted curtains to families around the region for the past six years.

Using curtains donated by the Wellington public, this year has seen over 1600 pairs of curtains up cycled for eligible families, including many with children, elderly members or those suffering with housing related health issues.

Curtain bank co-ordinator Shelali Shetty said well fitted and lined curtains made a big difference to keeping homes warm.

“Uncovered windows can lose four

or fi ve times as much heat as an uninsulated wall.

“In cold and damp homes, family members can be more susceptible to serious illnesses, including rheu-matic fever, respiratory illness, asthma, and skin conditions.

“Not all landlords provide curtains and for those families on tight budg-ets buying good quality, new curtains is simply unaffordable”.

Curtain recipient, Paulina Taaku Smith, said her family benefited greatly from the curtains she re-ceived through the Wellington Curtain Bank.

“My son, Irata, got admitted to ICU twice, with bronchiolitis. The house was too cold.”

Paulina said since getting curtains

from the Wellington Curtain Bank her son has not been sick again.

Sustainability Trust’s Curtain Bank is generously supported by Genesis Energy and Wellington Community Trust and relies on a steady supply of donated, used curtains.

A dedicated team – including 12 volunteers – tailor the second hand stock to fi t each home, with added lining to help ensure homes can be kept warm and dry.

The curtain bank is now closed for the summer and will reopen in April 2016 to service families in need for another year. Curtain donations are gratefully received all year round at Sustain-ability Trust’s EcoCentre, 2 Forrester Lane, Tory Street, Wellington.

From left, Paulina Taaku Smith and her daughter, Kasaemita, with curtain bank coordinator Shelali Shetty.

Hundreds of people gathered at Civic Square on Tuesday night for a moment of reflection and remem-brance following attacks in Paris at the weekend. The Ambassador of France, Florence Jeanblanc-Risler and the Mayor of Wellington Celia Wade-Brown were among those in attendance. A book of condolences will remain in the main council build-ing foyer until Friday evening for those who wish to write a message of support or tribute.

Suspicious FiresPolice are seeking information

about a suspicious fi re near Mount Victoria last week. Police said at about 7.30pm a fi re was lit near the bad-minton hall on Ruahine St. Two more fi res were started on Friday morning about 7.30am just off the Mt Victoria walking tracks north of the SPCA. The track leads from Alexandra Rd down to Pirie St. Police said the fi res were reported and were extinguished quickly. Police have asked members of the public with information about the fi res to contact them.

Staff at Pak’n Save Kilbirnie are growing out their mo’s in support of Movember.

The Movember Founda-tion is a global men’s health charity which raises funds that deliver innovative, break-through research and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier and longer lives.

New Zealand was the sec-ond country to offi cially join the hairy movement, behind Australia, with Movember fi rst grown here in 2006.

This year Pak’n Save is showing support for Movem-

ber and stores across the coun-try are running a nationwide fundraiser in support of the campaign.

So far, close to $20,000 has been raised across stores in the North Island alone and Pak’n Save Kilbirnie has raised $2000.

Owner of Pak’n Save Kil-birnie, Dean Gault, said around 10 staff members from his store were taking part in the campaign this month.

“It’s a good cause. It has created a few laughs that’s for sure. We had a big group meeting in Auckland last week and there were some interesting mo’s on display.”

Growing their mo for a good cause

Continued from page 2The Environment Com-

mittee will deliberate on the issue at a meeting today and a decision as to whether the campground will get the green light will be made.

In the meantime the commu-nity has collected more than 250 signatures from residents opposed to the campground, in a last minute effort to see the proposal put to bed.

President of the Owhiro Bay Residents Association, Jason Brennan, said the community already had a freedom camp-ing site at Owhiro Bay’s Te Kopahou reserve.

He said a survey completed when the proposal for the campground was announced, showed 79 per cent of the community was opposed to the campground.

“Owhiro Bay already has a campsite so this would be the second one the council has put in our community without going to other communities to

look at what is available.“I am really hoping the coun-

cil will listen to what the com-munity is saying very clearly.”

Owhiro Bay School board chairman, Peter Noble, said the small suburb did not need two freedom camping grounds.

“The idea that a community with 500 people has to deal with 50 per cent of Welling-ton’s camping issue is an unfair burden.”

Wellington City Councillors David Lee and Paul Eagle both and said the site at Happy Valley Park was unsuitable.

“There are so many environ-mental issues and we have to look at mitigation, whether it is the school, traffi c or impact on the stream,” said David.

“… we have to listen to the community they have some valid concerns.”

“Local residents and or-ganisations are strongly op-posed to a second low-cost motorhome and camping park

Members of the Owhiro Bay community are opposed to a proposal which would see a campground in the small suburb of 500 people.

in the area,” Paul said. Both Paul and David sug-

gested looking at alternatives outside Wellington City.

Wellington City Councillor Iona Pannett, who is also chair of the Environment Committee, said camping in Wellington had been a problem for many years.

“We want to welcome tourists to our city… Kiwis

are always welcomed when overseas and I think we need to offer that same type of hospitality.

“We know the demand is there and we know it is growing.” How do you feel about an inner city campground in Happy Valley? Email us at [email protected]

Wellingtonians have cheaper weekend bus fares to look forward to next month.

For four weeks from Novem-ber 28, Go Wellington buses will change to a $1 fare for one zone of travel and $2 adult fare and $1.50 fare for children for two or three zones of travel.

It is hoped this will encour-age people to use public trans-port to travel in and out of the city.

The Wellington City Council has budgeted $200,000 for the initiative.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said the public transport initiative would help to get more Wellingtonians onto buses and into the central city during the busy weekends in the run-up to Christmas.

“This initiative will provide

Cheaper weekend bus fares

a welcome boost for retail sales.”

Councillor Iona Pannett, Chair of Wellington City Council’s Environment Com-mittee, said the cheaper bus

fares bring multiple benefi ts to the city.

“This shows support for an environmentally sustainable travel option for people who want to go shopping in the

central city and don’t want to have to worry about conges-tion or parking time limits.

“Wellington City Council fi rst proposed this initiative in February this year and I’m thrilled that it’s going ahead in time for Christmas.”

The cheaper fares can be paid by cash or with a Snap-per card. The changes will be in effect from beginning of service on Saturday, Novem-ber 28, each weekend through to the last service on Sunday, December 20.

Continued from page 1Nicola said blood donors were very

special.“We always need more donors. Cur-

rently only four per cent of the eligible population donates blood.

“If you are part of the 96 per cent cur-rently sat on the fence thinking about it, please jump off and join in.

Nicola asked people to think of the “bigger picture” and said one donation could save three lives.

“Think of all the little children who have leukaemia who your blood is able to save… you’ve got to go beyond yourself and think of who your donation could save.

“You’re helping ultimately to save people’s lives and make a difference.”

The New Zealand Blood Service was also hoping to have more people sign up for plasma donations, Nicola said.

This year 240 people have donated plasma, however the blood service was hoping to reach 500 donations by the

end of the year.Plasma was used to make around 13

different medicines and because of this the demand for plasma had increased “hugely”, Nicola said.

“You have to have given at least one blood donation in the last two years before you can become a plasma donor.”

Plasma is collected using an apheresis machine. The machine spins off the red blood cells and keeps the plasma. The red blood cells are then returned to the donor.

Plasma has also earned the nickname “liquid gold” because of its colour, Nicola said, “It really is so special, it can be made into so many different medicines.”

The blood drive will take place next Thursday, November 19, at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie from 9.30am to 2.30pm. Appointments are pre-ferred and will take priority. To book an appointment call 0800 448 325.

Calling for your donation

• About 1 per cent of the population (or 42,000 patients) are treated with blood or blood products each year. That’s equivalent to 110 jumbo jets full of people or nearly the capacity of Eden Park.

• People who have been in acci-dents and su ered massive blood loss may need multiple transfusions of red blood cells and other blood components.

• The biggest use of blood products is for the treatment of cancer at 26 per cent, with the next biggest being surgery at 19 per cent.

The main block at Wellington East Girls’ College will maintain its historical integrity and character in an exciting multi- million dollar

rebuild. The $39 million rebuild of the

school’s main block was announced by Education Minister Hekia Parata last week.

The college’s main block was

completed in 1924, but it has not been used since 2011 due to structural issues.

The redevelopment will retain the block’s striking facade and will include the iconic vestibule.

Main block to rise again

Last week Kiwis across the country were shocked to hear the news that rugby legend and All Black great Jonah Lomu had passed away.

Lomu died at his home in Auckland last Wednesday after returning from watching the Rugby World Cup in England.

The 40-year-old had suffered from a serious kidney disease for most of his life.

Over the years, Lomu has spent time in Wellington - he lived in Maupuia while playing for the Hurricanes.

Island Bay artist Maurice Ben-nett is known for immortalising the ruby giant in a larger than life toast portrait in 2002.

The portrait stands 2.4 metres

by 2.4 metres and is made up of roughly 3000 slices of “cocktail toast”.

The Island Bay artist is among those to pay his respects to the fallen rugby giant, calling Lomu a “super-hero”.

“At the time and still today he was one of New Zealand’s great-est sports personalities. We were coming up to a world cup and I just wanted to honour the guy.

“Over the last week we have seen just how much public sup-port was given to him. Not only was he a great player… he was also a great personality.”

Public services will be held for Lomu on Sunday and Monday in Auckland.

Wellington’s iconic Brooklyn turbine will soon be replaced by a turbine which will generate more power.

Last week, the owner of the Brooklyn turbine, Meridian Energy, announced it had signed a contract for a new turbine that will begin generat-ing electricity from Wellington’s world-famous wind in April.

Meridian external relations manager Guy Waipara said the current turbine would be removed in December and work would begin in January to prepare the foundation for the new turbine.

The new turbine would arrive in Wellington at the end of March and it was expected to take three weeks to have the turbine up and running, he said.

He said the project would cost $2.9 million.“We’re very excited that this is happening. The

current turbine has become iconic. It is part of the

cityscape and is valued by the local community and wider Wellington region.”

The scheduled work meant there would be times during the next few months when access to mountain biking tracks and access to the turbine site would be closed.

Guy said this would be for short periods of time and people would be kept informed through notices on Meridian, Wellington City Council and Brooklyn Facebook pages.

Guy said the increase in the size of the new turbine took into account that modern turbines have generally increased in both size and genera-tion capability since the original Brooklyn turbine was installed 22 years ago.

The current turbine produces about 870 megawatt hours a year, while the new turbine will generate around 3,900 megawatt hours a year – enough to power around 490 average homes.

Iconic turbine to be replaced

Brooklyn’s iconic wind turbine will be replaced next year.

Young Wellingtonians are set to create their own wild visions for the capital as part of a dramatic arts, science and nature voyage in the town belt this weekend.

The Imagine My City pilot project will be launched this Sunday.

The project is part of a wider programme

The Imagine My City project has been created by Nature Through Arts Collective and the New Zealand National Commission

said the project was initially focused on children and their families in the suburbs of Mt Cook, Newtown and Brooklyn.

This Sunday’s launch, which will be held in Mt Cook, will allow children and their families to experience actors, artists and nature experts who have come together to inspire them to explore their neighbour-hood in new ways.

The launch will then be followed by a 100-Day Creative Challenge, which will see children create and share their own visions for what a nature-rich city might look like through art based media.

“It could be a story, short fi lm, sculpture or structure in nature, painting, music or dance – whatever makes them buzz.” The Imagine My City Launch will take place this Sunday, November 15. There are two performance times. One from 10am to midday and one from 2pm to 4pm. To register for the event email  [email protected] or head to naturethrougharts.wordpress.com

• Commissioned by Meridian’s predecessor Electricorp for wind generation research in March 1993, the Brooklyn turbine was the rst commercial-sized wind turbine in New Zealand.• The popularity of the turbine was high-

lighted in 2009 when it was out of service due to mechanical issues. A public cam-paign asking people whether they wanted to repair, replace or get rid of the turbine, showed 85% wanted to repair or replace it.• The new turbine is an Enercon E44,

manufactured by Enercon (a German-based wind turbine manufacturer). It will be 67m high, from ground to tip (the height of the Beehive building) with 20.8m blades (slightly smaller than the length of a tennis court).

FACTS ABOUT THE BROOKLYN WINDMILL:

However, a completely new building will be built behind it containing 28 new teaching spaces.

This will increase the col-lege’s maximum capacity to 1250.

Principal Sally Haughton said it was fantastic to be able to share the great news with the community.

“We will be returning the heart to the school.”

“There is really wide sup-port in the community for the retention of the facade and the historic future including the vestibule, because of its place in the visual landscape of Wellington and the identity of the school.

“What we have done is we

have been able to retain the original features still in the building. We are holding on to that tradition and connecting the past to the future.”

She said while the school would hold on to its tradition, an “innovative” new space would be connected.

The new “innovative learning space” would include a perfor-mance and cultural precinct, as well as the special needs unit a library and an art studio.

“It will be the social, cultural and performance heart of the school,” Sally said.

Construction at Wellington East Girls’ College is scheduled to begin in December next year and to be completed in March 2019.

Mini Minstrels is a weekly class that introduces children to mu-sic concepts including rhythm, melody, dynamics and more.

The class, runs every Wednesday at St Paul’s Lutheran Church Hall on King Street in Mount Cook during school term time.

They are aimed at pre-school aged children of all ages and their families.

Children use percussion instru-ments, toy animals, and ribbons, while participating in a variety of songs led by musician and early childhood educator, Heather Gar-side.

The sessions are fun and child-focused, using songs old and new, some with guitar accompaniment and some with CDs.

Movement and music go together, with everyone encouraged to watch, listen and join in at their own pace.

St Paul’s Lutheran Church offers the music sessions, along with morning tea and time for free play, to the community in and around Mt Cook and Newtown.

The teachers, children and whanau of Tuatara Kids early childcare centre in Miramar have spent the last several months putting together a mu-ral to enter into a community art competition.

Manager Jo McDougall said they completed the mural as part of the ‘Paint New Zealand Beautiful’ competition which was run by Resene.

While the centre would have to wait to see how they fared in the competition, they were excited to share their hard work with the community, Jo said.

“We were keen for it to be something our whanau got involved with along with us and we were keen to make something for our community to appreciate.”

Jo said the mural represented the Miramar Peninsula and also incorporated local Maori legends.

A pohutukawa tree on the mural was painted using handprints of all the centre’s children and the tree was chosen to refl ect the eastern suburbs.

She said the centre was strongly influenced by Ma-tariki when selecting a design.

The mural at Tuatara Kids early childcare centre in Miramar.

“We have had tremendous support from all of our fami-lies and our kids. I am proud of the way everybody did get together and do it and the chil-dren were involved as well.

“As an ECE centre we want to build our whanau com-munity. This was a great way for everyone to help out and achieve something cool.”

Jo said without the help of

Katee Thomas, a teacher at the centre, the mural never would have been completed.

“She led us through and kept us all on track and did a fab job.”

Children from a local creche are learn-ing all about life cycles thanks to three very special feathered friends.

Children at Crossways Community Creche in Mount Victoria have recently welcomed new members to their brood – three Plymouth Barred Rock chickens.

Teacher Julie Peal said the idea came about when some parents mentioned they were interested in keeping chickens.

“We thought what a beautiful opportu-nity for us to show children a life cycle. We all know where eggs come from but children in the city might not.”

Julie said after picking up an incubator the creche collected some eggs from a man who breeds chickens in the Kapiti Coast.

Of the nine eggs that were collected, three were fertile.

After turning the eggs in the incubator three times a day, the three chicks hatched after 21 days, Julie said.

“It was beautiful, parents and children were coming in that morning.”

She said a main concern of the children since the birth of the three chicks had been where their mother was.

“That was the question that came up most. We told them we had to be their mother and had to turn them so they would grow properly.”

Julie said the kids were very involved with cleaning the chick’s cage, which was made out of an old cot.

“It’s about responsibility and caring for our world and nurturing nature. It is

important in an early childhood centre.“We are learning as a community about

how to responsibly care for those little creatures in our environment.”

At this stage just one of the small birds has been named by the children. Because of its bright yellow feathers the name “banana bottom” was chosen.

Meanwhile the creche is awaiting the arrival of its second lot of offspring.

Before the new chicks are born the creche’s three chickens will be re-homed to one of its families.

Lani Robertson, 3, feeds the creche’s three five-week-old chickens some mixed vegetables.

An Island Bay teen is part of a group that will bring one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays to life at Bats Theatre this week.

Isabel Corfi atis, 17, is a member of the Wellington Young Actors group which is made up of actors and actresses between the ages of 12 and 17.

The theatre group’s current project is Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare and after months of hard work and rehearsal the group will perform at Bats Theatre this week.

As well as acting, the young company is encouraged to take on all production roles such as costume design, publicity and management.

The group is run by Deborah Eve Rea who recently accepted an invitation to spend a month at The Globe in London to study Shakespeare.

Isabel plays Antonio, a character who she describes as a “pirate sea captain”.

“She saves Sebastian from drowning and she falls in love with him but he doesn’t love her back.”

Isabel said she had performed Shake-speare before at school and was pleased to have the opportunity to bring another

of the famous playwright’s characters to life once again.

“The language is so different, so it can be hard to understand what you are speaking. But it is a really good skill to have because it is at the height of acting.

“Everyone strives to be able to perform Shakespeare and when you do it, it feels really good.”

A highlight of the project had been the opportunity to have choreography training for her role from Peter Hassel, Isabel said.

“He came in and choreographed a couple of fi ght scenes for us, we use fake knives and fake bricks.”

She said she was excited to share these scenes with an audience on stage.

Isabel said she has loved acting her whole life and sees a future on stage.

“I love being able to pretend to be someone else and bring my imagination to life.”

More exercise areas for dogs could be on the cards from next year.

Today the Wellington City Council’s Environment Committee will discuss the scope for reviews of the council’s Animals Bylaw and Dog Policy.

The policy and bylaw determine the requirements for keeping dogs and other animals.

If approved by the committee, the reviews will scrutinise management of cats, dogs, pigeons and poultry.

Environment Committee chair Iona Pan-nett said the main issues in terms of the dog policy review were adequacy of dog exercise areas, registration fees, dog faeces, and access to public places.

The review will look at the adequacy of certain dog exercise areas and the existing rule that does not allow dog owners to ‘stop’ when walking a dog through the CBD.

“From a dog owner’s perspective, the adequacy of dog exercise areas continues to be an issue. There are a number of excellent areas throughout the city, but there are still a number of gaps in the network.

“We know some dog owners want to be able to take their dogs into the city but other people may feel it is not appropriate, so we will be asking the public what they think.”

Hazel Harrison from Nose2Tail in Lyall Bay welcomed more facilities for dog owners.

However, she said it was important own-ers were well educated when it came to off-leash dog behaviour.

“I do have concerns about having more dog parks and the lack of education when it comes to safe off-leash dog play.”

Hazel said an information board at dog parks identifying and highlighting fearful dog body language could help educate

owners.“There are so many new dog owners out

there that are not really 100 per cent sure how their dogs should behave when they are playing in a big group… it can be really diffi cult.”

Work on the reviews will start in the New Year – and a four week public consultation will follow in May.

An updated Animals Bylaw and Dog Policy would then be debated, adopted and in force by September 2016.

Bring the water to the boil, put on a tight- tting lid, and simmer for 3 hours. A local chimney removal business to help Wellingtonians remove the ‘risk factor’ from their homes.

Owner of The Chimney Removal Com-pany in Seatoun, Kevin Giles, started his business in 2012 after a friend asked him to remove his chimney.

“He had visited Christchurch and seen the considerable number of chimneys that had caused damage in the earthquakes.

“Following a spate of earthquakes in the capital, more Wellingtonians have become proactive in earthquake proofing their homes by removing their chimneys.

“Also a high percentage of chimneys are not even used as people use alternative forms of heating” Kevin says.

“A lot of chimneys in Wellington are at the end of their lives and are very fragile. Weather has eroded away the joints, or the steel reinforcement has corroded and is making the chimney unstable.”

Kevin says removing your chimney not only removes the “risk factor”, it also creates extra space in your home which can be used to create extra oor space or storage space.

“We can also give clients the option if they just want to remove the top of the chimney and re- ue it, so they can still keep their open re or gas re functional.

“My team is made up of tradesmen and I am personally involved with every chimney removal.

“We well take down your chimney carefully and fully protect your home and possessions.”

“We have great systems and a lot of very satis ed customers.”

A Garden Trail will delight Karori residents as well as visitors to the colourful suburb - rain, hail or shine this weekend.

The trail which takes place every two to three years will allow people to view 12 gardens with a variety of shapes and sizes.

Barry Lovegrove from the Ka-rori Lions said this year’s trail will be providing visitors with a wide range of gardens to take a look at.

“There will be a mixture of old and new – grand scale to cottage gardens.

“Some properties have trees that have been there for half a century or more, and other gardens will be modern and contemporary,”

he said. Zealandia has jumped on board

this year’s trail organised by the Karori Lions.

The wildlife sanctuary will feature on the trail as one of the 12 gardens, and Lions will be donat-ing all proceeds made during the weekend to adding new facilities to Zealandia.

“We are still in the concept stage but the facilities may include an exhibition area, a place to get tea and coffee, bathrooms and some-where to sit down,” Barry said.

Lions clubs worldwide will soon be celebrating their 100th year of existence, and each club has been asked to do something signifi cant to mark the event.

The Karori Lions are hoping the

new facilities at Zealandia will co-incide with their centennial year.

Barry said the Lions like to generate revenue for charitable causes with thousands of dollars being raised each garden trail.

In the past, funds from the garden trail have gone towards such charities as the Mary Potter Hospice, the dementia ward of Sprott House, and the local Youth Centre.

About 50 to 60 people help or-ganise the trail which takes seven months of preparation.

Helpers act as garden scouters, gate keepers and support staff, Barry said.

The trail will go across Saturday 21 and Sunday 22, November and tickets cost $25 per person.

Karori Garden Trail back again

If you are keen to see some of the stunning gardens of Ka-rori you can purchase tickets in advance from outlets listed

on www.karorilions.com, or on either viewing day from any of the participating gardens.

Dear Ed, Khandallah residents rightly concerned about Council plans for medium-density housing should be aware that that the current Council District Plan allows high density housing with no quality controls un-

der the guise of the in ll policy. Dwellings can be built to one metre from the boundary with pedestrian-only access past living spaces and bedrooms of existing dwellings. Such dwellings can be built without notify-

ing or consulting the neighbouring owners. The Council considers that this is acceptable and balances the rights of all property owners concerned. Khandallah residents should be

very careful of any claims made by the Council about consultation and about quality control, and should demand considerably more detail of any proposals. Leith Wallace

Dear Ed, Re: “Last step for Johnson-ville Bridge” (Independent Herald, November 4 2015):The Broderick road bridge and the two lanes off the motorway may be ne, but there have been many aspects which indicate a botched job for generally no gain overall. The cycleway on Broderick road north side, near library, means 10 parking spaces have been lost. I

haven’t seen anyone cycling there yet. Also, the highly used Broderick road pedestrian crossing, near the Library, has been removed.Other elevated areas in this vicin-ity (pedestrian refuges) have been removed. On Johnsonville road, from the Z Service Station to near Broderick road there is a Flush Median strip in

the middle of the road. Unfortunately, it’s not safe to use, being only 1.5 metres wide, whereas average car width is 1.8 metres. The pedestrian tra c lights waiting area on Johnsonville road, Ware-house side, has three large puddles when it’s raining. The opportunity to widen the con-stricted corner where Johnsonville and Moore eld roads join Middleton

road (by the Real Estate o ce) has been lost.Lastly, but certainly not least, some-one is going to be injured or worse on the Moore eld road pedestrian crossing, near the Medical Centre Pharmacy. The metalwork chicane doesn’t work as it’s placed in the wrong position and the crossing is far too wide.John Bowers

annually to keep our services running, and we only get 12% from government agency fund-ing, so our appeal week is our major fundraising drive for the year. The money raised local towns and cities will ensure our ser-vices continue. It is also important to raise awareness about just how prevalent and debilitating ar-thritis is, and that it is not just an older person’s disease. The inclusion of pets adds unique and welcomed aspect of Enliven’s Kilmarnock Heights Home, which has recently become home to new rabbits and baby birds.

The home’s new rabbits, Adam and Eve, were chosen and named by the residents of Kilmarnock Heights Home and are proving popular among the residents and their visitors.

“Adam and Eve run around in the courtyard on sunny days and residents watch them while enjoy-ing a cup of tea,” explains the home’s manager Bronwyn Drennan.

“We welcome all children in the neighbourhood to come along and spend time with the residents and our animals here. We recently had an early childhood group visit and they loved interacting with all the animals we have in the home.”

Kilmarnock Heights Home also has a bird aviary which is thriving.

“We had baby budgies born recently and we’ve donated some of them to other Enliven homes around Wellington.”

The home’s other animals include three resident cats, fi sh, dogs that visit regularly with volunteers, and the home is planning to add chickens to the list.

“The residents are very much in charge here. They thought the rabbits would be great to have at the home so they could watch them in the garden and they knew the children that visit would love them, and next on the list is getting our own chickens that residents can help look after,” Bronwyn explains.

Bronwyn says animals add to the spontaneity at the home and provides residents with companions that they can care for and nurture.

“We always have animal interaction when we can because it’s part of our homes model of care, the Eden Alternative.”

Eden encourages close and continuing contact with children, animals and plants, continuing hobbies and ensuring residents have a say in what they want to do and how their home is run, says Bronwyn.

“Eden puts the decision making back into the hands of the residents and re-enforces the fact that we work in their home, they don’t live where

we work.”Kilmarnock Heights Home clinical nurse

manager Anna Roberts and her husband and children have volunteered to help look after the home’s rabbits by cleaning the hutch once a week.

“I come in the weekends with my family and we clean out the rabbit hutch - it’s our little volunteer job,” says Anna.

“My children love visiting because the residents have become like grandparents to them. It’s re-ally nice to work in an environment where that’s encouraged.”

Anna says the Eden Alternative is what sets the home apart from the rest.

“Eden is about the bigger picture and we have a collective vision that we, residents and staff, all are working towards, to create a truly elder-centred environment and it truly makes a difference,” says Anna.

Kilmarnock Heights Home is operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profi t organisation Presbyterian Support Central, and provides rest home and respite care as well as a popular day guest programme. You can’t beat Wellington on a good day!

Another summer is almost here and it is time to make use of our wonderful harbour and coastline. These are basic safety rules and guidelines to help you stay safe on the water.

There needs to be a lifejacket for each person on board all pleasure boats. If the boat is less than 6 metres in length, then the lifejackets must be worn unless the Skipper decides it is safe not to. This includes kayaks and stand up paddleboards.

All boats must carry a means of communication to let other people know if they get into trouble. If you are close to shore this could be a very loud whistle; further away from shore might require a VHF radio distress flare or emergency radio beacon (EPIRB). Put your cell phone in a waterproof bag, and dial 111 if in trouble.

If diving you must display a dive flag of at least 60cm x 60cm.

There are a lot of swimmers in the water over summer, some quite a long way from a beach.

Remember to keep a good lookout at all times and your speed less than 5 knots within 200 metres of shore or a divers flag and within 50 metres of another boat or person in the water.

Always check the weather forecast before you go out, it can change quickly in Wellington.

Always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.

Stay safe and enjoy your boating this summer.

What’s a NewZealand summer all about?

Having some fun, swimming and play-ing at the beach, a slow river cruise and a family picnic? Throw in some sport, some culture and some V8 noise and excite-ment? Relax at a café with a coff ee and friends before strolling along a boulevard of boutique shopping? Where’s the one place you can fi nd all of this without hav-ing to move too far? Whanganui.

Really. Whanganui. Whanganui is a unique treasure in the North Island hav-ing shared its natural beauty and many attractions with settlers from over 175 years ago.

Whanganui’s summer is full of events to spice up the lazy days – the world famous Cemetery Circuit Motorcycle Street Rac-es, judged NZ’s best established region-al event for 2015 is held on Boxing Day every year and the V8 Jet Sprint Champi-onships thunder around a purpose built water track at Shelterview on the follow-ing day.

Whanganui’s Vintage Weekend kicks off for Wellington’s Anniversary Week-end. From street festivals, riverside en-tertainment, classic and vintage cars, and a boundless banquet held in the main street there’s plenty to see and do.

If your family is all outdoors and action then head for a river kayak or jet boat ex-perience, mountain biking trails or out to Bushy Park Sanctuary to see an enormous and ancient Rata tree. Explore the stars and Saturn from the Ward Observatory on a Friday night. Try a spot of fi shing on the banks of the Whanganui River or sail on the Waimarie paddle steamer for a set-tler’s view of river life.

For a few laid back options include the Whanganui Regional Museum, a comput-er clubhouse, a trip in the underground elevator built to travel 66 metres inside a hill or learn some glass blowing tech-niques. Visitors come for many reasons but whatever these might be it’s a bril-liant place for a family visit.

We off er you memorable cruising on the beautiful Whanganui River.

Our PS Waimarie is truly New Zealand’s premier Heritage experience.

Feel the history as our ancestors plied the Whanganui River aboard Paddle steamer Waimarie, New Zealand’s last true paddle steamer (est.1900), still coal fi red and still steam powered. On board you will fi nd covered and open decks, comfortable sa-loons, licensed bar and cafe.

Meet the legendary Mr Alexander Hat-rick, original owner of this magnifi cent old

lady.Send a pigeon message back to the Riv-

erboat Centre.Stoke the fi re that heats the boiler to

drive the two great paddle wheels.View the pictorial screenings of life on

the Whanganui River and enjoy tea, coff ee, a beer or a wine as you cruise, surrounded by true New Zealand Heritage. Even the crew are dressed for the occasion.

Please contact us with your personal re-quirements so that we can off er you our very aff ordable pricing options.

Enjoy a cruise

Children from Worser Bay School have delved into their backyards to make this year’s school fair something special - and very local.

Using produce the children have scav-enged from their backyards and with a little help from local suppliers, chef and school mum Hannah Thornton has put together an amazing array of goodies to stock the popu-lar deli at the fair on Sunday, November 8.

“We really wanted to use as much local produce as we could as it came into season.

“The children and their parents have brought in lots, as have friends and family and Kim [Chin] from Miramar Fruit Supply supplied the rest.”

Hannah has assorted a tasty range in-cluding preserves, chutneys, mustards, cordials, kimchi (a Korean pickle), relishes and even a pizza sauce.

For those wanting an early start there are also Christmas cakes and mince meat for Christmas pies.

Burgers, dumplings, pizzas from the

school’s own pizza ovens, Thai fi shcakes and many other food stalls will be keep-ing everyone fed on the day.

The theme for this year’s fair is “Our Secret Garden”.

Worser Bay School principal Jude Pente-cost says this ties in well with the learning the children have been doing this year.

“Relationships are at the heart of our school and strongly refl ected in our cur-riculum. This year's inquiry, 'What and Who is in Our Backyard' has been full of rich learning experiences and provides a great link to the fair.”

Money raised from the fair will go towards various school projects.

In the past these have included help with digital technology, additional staffing, teacher professional development and the engagement of a writing specialist. Worser Bay School Fair - 168 Seatoun Heights Rd, Sunday, November 8, from 11am to 2pm, rain or shine. Some Eftpos available.

Motorists can expect more closures along State Highway 1 next weekend.

The highway between Ngauranga and Thorndon was closed last weekend and will close once again on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 of November.

The closure will begin at 10pm and the motorway will re-open at 7am on Sunday morning and 5.30am on Monday morning. All lanes in both directions will be closed.

Despite the closure, Wellington High-way Manager, Neil Walker said detours

would be in place and everyone would be able to get where they wanted to go at all times.

However, he said people should allow more time for their journeys during these times.

“We’re doing everything we can to minimise disruption, which is why we’re doing it in the middle of the night during the weekend.”

He said the last motorway closures took place in August, and went like clockwork.

The Wellington City Council is busy planning Christmas celebrations for Wellington.

Nick Tansley and his pop-up Christ-mas caravan will return to the CBD in December to lead some impromptu carol singing sessions with help from enthusiastic passers-by.

A variety of other musicians and performers will also be appearing at random around the city sharing the spirit of the silly season.

On Sunday, December 13 fl oats will roll into town for the Santa Parade. The popular family event will feature bagpipes and brass bands, clowns and Chinese dragon dancers, as well as a few new surprises.

For the fi rst time, there are a couple of spots for lucky children in Santa’s sleigh,

as well as an amazing family fun prize package.

When the excitement of Santa’s early visit to Wellington is over, parade-goers can head up to Cuba Street to check the popular thoroughfare’s festive makeover and enjoy a gathering of street perform-ers.

The following day, December 14, is the fi nal day of Chanukah, and time to cel-ebrate at the local Jewish community’s biggest event of the year – Chanukah in the Park.

Food stalls, klezmer music, Israeli dancing, face painting and loads of other activities will be on offer in Midland Park from 5pm to 7pm.

Array of goodies at local fair

Chef Hannah Thornton has used local, seasonal produce provided by Worser Bay School chil-dren, friends and family to put together a tasty array of treats that will be on sale at the school fair on Sunday, November 8.

Members of the Kiwi Athletic Club wowed at the central inter league meeting last Saturday.

The Kiwi Athletic Club is based at Newtown Stadium and focuses on track and fi eld sports, aimed at athletes from college age to veteran.

Club president, Peter Jack, has been a member of the club since 1964.

He still takes part in fi eld events such as shot put, discus, hammer throw and javelin.

He travelled alongside 10 members of the small club to Palmerston North on Saturday for the meet.

Peter said despite the club’s small size, he was thrilled with the results.

The team took out fi ve wins and more than a dozen placings.

“We had 10 members go up from our club of 15 and I thought there were some incredible per-formances from all of them.

“Because it is early in season they will get better as well.”

Peter said he had noticed an increase in the number of over-seas athletes joining the club in recent years.

“We have a lot of overseas ath-letes in the club who have joined us from places such as Denmark, Germany, Burma and Scotland.

“Over the last 10 years we have found a fall in New Zealanders coming into our sport because of professional sports such as rugby and soccer.

“We are now seeing more peo-ple join who were originally from overseas… they are keen to do athletics and stay in the sport.”

Peter said Kiwi Athletics Club were always looking for new members.

“It’s great for the youngsters’ health and to keep them out of trouble and we are fi nding to that it is very useful as a forerunner for them to use their fi tness for other sports.” For more information on the Kiwi Athletics Club, head to www.sportsground.co.nz-kiwiathletics or phone Peter on 388 6224.

A group of keen netballers from St Francis de Sales School in Island Bay learnt all about dodging last Saturday.

The year 1 and 2 students are part of the Future Ferns programme, which teaches children from the age of fi ve to ignite a lifelong involvement in netball.

The sequential programme aims to teach children fundamental movement and ball skills.

Each Saturday the children complete a skill session before playing a game.

The games are played four a side, in a third of the netball court and hula hoops are used as goals to aid with the childrens’ development.

Equal participation is encouraged dur-ing the games.

As part of last Saturday’s lesson, chil-dren focused on two activities, ‘knee tag’ and ‘treasure’.

Island Bay School children were given a lesson in cycling skills on Monday.

A group of year 5 and 6 students took part in the Pedal Ready programme earlier this week, after an enthusiastic student decided she wanted to learn more about cycling.

Pedal Ready is a Greater Wellington Regional Council initiative and was introduced four years ago.

As part of the initiative sessions in cycle safety and skills are offered at no charge to schools in the region.

More than 4000 children have now taken part in the initiative.

Pedal Ready instructor Patrick Morgan said the programme begins with a grade 1 session in the playground, where children are taught how to stop and start and how to use hand signals.

Safety checks of their bikes and helmets are also completed.

For the grade 2 session children are given on-road training which involves learning traffi c rules, lane positioning and negotiat-

ing traffi c.Florence Bragg and her friend Lillian

Marshall got in contact with Patrick and the team at Pedal Ready to arrange a session at Island Bay School so they could learn how to ride their bikes safely.

“We had the idea that we should do this and then we searched the web and found a suitable website, Florence said.”

The girls were amongst those to complete a grade 1 session which was held at Island Bay School earlier this week,

Patrick said Pedal Ready instructors have previously taught students at Berhampore, Houghton Valley and South Wellington Intermediate Schools.

“It is great to extend that to Island Bay School students. This is the fi rst time we have had a school student organise the session.

“It looks like there is a lot of demand for kids to improve their bike skills and they are the envy of every other Wellington suburb with this protected bike cycleway. [Island Bay] are leading the way for Wel-lington.”

Students sharpen their bike skills

What would medium den-sity housing look like in Island Bay?Medium density housing can be stand-alone, semi-detached, ter-raced houses or apartment build-ings, ranging from one to three storeys high. It should provide a low maintenance housing option close to a commercial centre and public transport. Why does the council think Island Bay needs medium density housing? The Council’s growth predictions for Island Bay and Owhiro Bay are for over 300 more households over the next 30 years, mostly in

the 60 to 80+ age groups. The medium density proposal aims to encourage development of housing that would be suitable to meet this demand and adaptable to all demographic needs. Does Island Bay have the infrastructure (for exam-ple schooling, medical centre, roading, transport, water, waste) to support medium density housing?Island Bay does not currently have the infrastructure to support a large scale increase in population. However, large scale increases are not anticipated, and if this oc-curred the council has recognised that services would need to be

reassessed. Would medium density housing mean that devel-opers could build multi level blocks next door to me without consideration of my sunlight and the character of the area?Building would occur within the design guidelines that are agreed with the community as a result of this consultation. The design guidelines will set out the parameters for any new develop-ment (for example height, site coverage, open space, sunlight planes) including the look and feel of new builds – so now is the time for the community to have input

into what these are. How can I tell the Council what I think?Put in a written submission by December 7. You can do this by writing a letter, sending an email or using the council’s submission form. If you make a submission you should note your concerns and also what you would like to see in the proposed rules. The details of how to submit are on the council’s website: http://wellington.govt.nz/your-council/projects/housing-choice-and-supply/ Will this be the only oppor-tunity for the community to be heard?

No. After this consultation the council will develop a draft pro-posal with more detail about the design guidelines, and this will be consulted on. Following this, a nal proposal will be prepared and formal consultation will take place. So this is the rst in three consultations with the commu-nity. Further public meetings will be held through this process. If you have any questions you would like the residents association to follow up please email [email protected] more information head to wellington.govt.nz

The Wellington City Council is currently consulting on what medium density might look like in Island Bay. The Island Bay Residents Association is working with the council to get unbiased information to the community, so an informed decision can be made.

Medium Density Housing Questions & Answers

Carols ready to rock Wellingtonians can once again

enjoy some local Christmas cheer and carols at Government House this silly season.

The Government House Newtown Carols will take place this Saturday.

Newtown Carols Trust chairman Ian Rogers said following on from the success of last year’s event, the show will run over the afternoon to appeal

to the growing family audience of kids and families.

Among those to perform are the combined voices of the Newtown Carols Choir, drawn from the Pacifi c Island churches of the area, alongside the Salvation Army Brass Band.

As well was this, the 2014 bar-bershop quartet world champions Musical Island Boys will return to

the stage for a rare public appearance. The fl amboyant and ever-youthful

Mafutaga Tagata Matuta PIPC group will once again be the feature support act.

“It promises to be special as al-ways,” said Ian.

“We’ve had a great response from the local community and people are really looking forward to the day.”

Capping off the show is the arrival of Santa and this year Ian said the man in red would be “arriving in style”.

The event is held in association with funding partners The Infi nity Foundation and the New Zealand Community Trust, and will also support The Salvation Army, whose work is embedded in the city of

Wellington and the community of Newtown.

Entry to Government House Carols is by donation at the gate with all pro-ceeds going to The Salvation Army. Government House Newtown Carols is on at 2.30pm this Saturday, November 28. Further details are at Facebook/Government House Carols
