EDITHBURGH PROGRESS ASSOCIATION

SUMMARY OF IDEAS FLYER DISTRIBUTED JULY/AUGUST 2018

The Edithburgh Progress Association would like to thank every one who submitted their ideas for Edithburgh during late July and August.

Progress formed a sub committee in September who have met and discussed each idea and have started work on planning for the next 12 months.

A huge thank you to Karen at the Post Office for facilitating the distribution and collation of the flyers.

Below are the ideas received.

• Starting a Tidy Towns Program at Edithburgh. • Consider what Tidy Towns are judged on. • New notice board outside the post office. • A recreation centre for roller skating, table tennis, squash courts, etc. which could be used at night

for courses such as cooking, backing, day care, etc. • Skateboard, roller skating, bike riding track for teens during holidays. • A dog park, BMX park, skate park. • Purchase old supermarket site and redevelop it into 6 small shops. • Encourage some main street property owners to paint house or clean up. • An information bay for tourists to tell them about the lighthouse, Sultana Point, the Tidal Pool, etc. • Facilities for divers. • Outdoor cinema during summer. • Micro brewery open for tasting sales, etc. • Roller skating in the school gym. • Put Braund’s old shop to good use. • Enter KESAB Tidy Towns.

• A roundabout at Edith & Blanche Streets. • A water fountain along the Walk the Yorke Track. • Walkway along the breakwater stone walls. • Redevelopment of main intersection at Edithburgh. • Make more outdoor dining areas for pubs and cafes. • Signs in the town pointing to the Flora Park/advertising the Flora Park. • Trees in our streets – natives, bottle brush, flowering gums, frangipanis – an avenue only. • Anstey Tce and Esplanade – trees for shade for parking in hot weather. • Park signage for paths (mosaic on stones or sign posts). • Adopt an area to care for. • High fence and turnstile type gate around Des Patterson reserve. Introduce wallabies, kangaroos,

emus and wombats into reserve – construct a dam for road run off water plus a sheep trough style float valve to keep full.

• Signs to pick up dog poo on walking trails. • Sign on Jetty to put rubbish in bins provided. • Greening of Foreshore.

• Encourage Council to embrace Tourism on a whole, sell the town more. • Complete all footpaths in main street (Edith and Blanche). • Extend tree planting to all approach roads. • Reduce speed limit to 40kms. • Road along west side of Caravan Park badly needs attention. • Fence along the car park at Sultana Point needs attention – too many cars going onto the beach. • It’d be beneficial to have a tap located near the boat ramp for people paying to use the ramp that

don’t have mains water at home to wash down their vessels.

• Improve facilities at the Park – eg. Larger camp kitchen, monitor speed limit, cheaper holiday units during winter.

• Improve appearance of west side of caravan park – naked now all trees gone (addressed). • Higher fence along west end of Caravan Park.

• Radio Edithburgh - Peter Hooper from Coobowie has been touring the state installing regional radio stations. He's happy to meet and discuss. Could operate from Sea Rescue station, institute or car-avan park.

• Promote Edithburgh’s healthy lifestyle.

• Encourage volunteers to help at Museum Craft Shop to extend trading hours. • Set up a seafood restaurant on Troubridge Island – ferry diners out from jetty – put the whole

restaurant out for tender. Get a grant to develop, have aquariums and island walks to make it a day trip if needed – a total experience.

• Lighting up Edithburgh – with passionate boaters to decorate their boats/vessels with lights in various shapes – eg. Octopus, fish, etc. Make it a competition to raise money for local charity or development. Follow with an evening festival.

• Christmas tree competition in Town Hall – build and display quirky Christmas trees (hold ballot for best one) – could be a fundraiser.

• Have the pop up shops been tried at Edithburgh? • A hire shop of fishing equipment for people on holidays.

• Progress members to have an area of responsibility: o Flora Park. o Cooee o Day at the Burgh o Community Grants o Kids sports, etc.

Make communication easier, allow Progress to get monthly feedback on its areas of support and give volunteers someone to go to when the need arises outside of monthly meetings.

Birds of the Heel

Jeffrey Robinson

On the beach

An early morning walk on the beach at Sultana Point can provide interesting moments. It isn’t uncommon to see a fox on the beach, often looking for food in the seaweed at the high tide mark. We watched this fox approaching some grey teal and waders. We suspected it was hoping for an easy breakfast. However, the ducks simply retreated a few metres into the sea and the waders departed. The oystercatchers simply kept watching

Grey teal move out to sea to avoid the approaching fox.

They soon return to feed on the shore-line when the fox gives up and heads back into the bush.

DO YOU KNOW?

The word “palace” is an English word with origins in Rome. It comes from one of Rome’s famous “Seven Hills”, the Palatine, upon which the Emperor resided in what grew into a sprawling and opulent home. In Latin, the Palatine Hill was called the “Palatium”, and the word “Palatine” came to refer to the Emperor’s residence rather than the actual hill. The word reached us via Old French, in which the word “palais” referred to the Palatine Hill. You can see the word “Palatine” more easily in the form “palatial’, meaning palace-like in size.

MURAL PLAQUE UNVEILING

The Edithburgh Tidal Pool Mural Plaque was unveiled on Wednesday 3rd

October 2018 by Rowan Ramsey, Federal Member for Grey in the presence of Fraser Ellis, State MP for Narungga, mural artist Darryl Lewis, Edithburgh Progress Association President John Edwards and members, Mayor Ray Agnew, Deputy Mayor Scott Hoyle, Councillor Darren Braund as well as community members. The mural is 33 metres long and took Darryl and his son Andrew 5 months to finish. It is a community work of art with 300 handprints of local school students taking pride of place. The mural has contributed to and increased interest in the pool.

The pool has also undergone refurbishment to its fencing, concrete work and steps which have not only increased visual appeal but improved safety and ensured pool structural integrity. Yorke Peninsula Council has collaborated with the pool upgrades by providing support and work.

CHILLI LEMON SQUID"

INGREDIENTS:-

2kg cleaned squid and tentacles, 1 tbsp grated lemon rid, ¾ cup lemon juice, 1 tbsp olive oil, 2 tspn hot chilli sauce, 4 cloves of garlic.

METHOD:-

Discard heads and beaks from squid, keep these for crabbing. Cut the tentacles in halves lengthwise, removing big claspers, ( great bait for whiting), open up hoods, and cut into strips, combine all the above really well, in a ziplock bag (2 in case it leaks), and bung this in the fridge for at least 3hrs or preferably overnight, so grab a cold one, sit back, and relax.

NEXT DAY:-

Stoke the BBQ, making sure it's really clean, drain the squid, and throw out the marinade, it's done its job, add the squid to the oiled plate, cook over high heat, until it changes colour, serve with sprinkled parsley, lemon wedges and a piled onto a large platter lined with fresh salad, grab another coldie, summer has arrived (along with every blowie in Christendom).

“AWESOME FUN WITH FISHING”

"CRABBING WITH THE KIDS"

You don't need much to have a great day on the water, whether it's in a boat, on the jetty, or on low tide at the beach, crabbing is one of my first fishing memories with my family, up in Whyalla, 8mile creek.

All you need are crab nets for the boat or jetty, some fish skeletons or fish heads, as baits, tie them in with cable ties, or pop them in proper crab cages, secure them tightly, and fling over the edge. Best to do when the tide is not running fast, or they won't stay on the seabed, check every 15 mins, and measure the crabs properly. All crabs have to be 11cm, side to side of the largest base spine on the carapace. All females with eggs (berries) have to be returned to the sea immediately by law, as with all undersized crabs. Go see Jaye at the tackle shop, grab a crab measure, they are only a couple of bucks each, better than a fine. Each crabber is allowed 20 crabs per day only, combined limit of blue swimmers and sand crabs, no more. Boat limit of 60 only if 3 or more persons on board.

For the beach crabber, you need a rake each, a floating container and rope attached to it and your waist, an old pair of sneakers is advised, crabs have good pincers, go out in the water, find some channels, and rake till you feel something, spin it over, and hopefully it's a big bluey, measure and pop in container after measuring it, again 20 crabs per person. When you've achieved this, take some sea water home with you, and bung it in a large pot and bring to the boil, grab a coldie, you deserve that much. Pop the crabs in the freezer, for ½ to ¾ hr, to humanely put them to sleep, also stops them throwing off their legs when they hit the boiling water, cook crabs for about 5 to 8 mins, then put them in a slurry of iced water, to cool quickly. Cooked hot crabs are delicious to eat when first pulled out of boiling water, but they also have a laxative effect, so be warned,

Watching the kids play on the beach is terrific, and believe me when I say they will remember their crab-bing days on the beach, I do.

meet your community

Serving 34years as a firefighter was the greatest learning experience for both public needs and empathy for those less fortunate. I have been exposed to the best and worst of people who have taught me to be a human being with a levelled outlook on life. I am blessed with an amazing lady, Carmen, who was working in Adelaide in the food industry. Buying the service station has given us the opportunity to work side by side and use our respective skills. I love the Windy Burgh and have been associated with it since 1974 when my parents owned the Deli Newsagency. Carmen and I hope to maintain our love for each other and our sense of humour through this new retail adventure. We both believe in the value of community, hard work and loyalty.
