GRADUATION CONVOCATION CEREMONIES

Ah, respected Elders, respected friends and relatives,
respected visitors, respected students, respected dignitaries,
respected teachers. Welcome into Snuneymuxw territory,
today. You have left other work to be here today; you came
to show honour and respect to our students today. With the
utmost gratitude, we thank you respected ones.
Each graduate, after crossing the stage and receiving their parchment, is invited to touch the inside of the lid of the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box (Huupukwanum). The texture on the cover of the convocation program is a rendition of the texture on the inside of the lid. This VIU tradition symbolizes the impact and impression graduates leave on their university and weaves their stories together with those of graduates who came before them and all who will come after them.
My heartfelt congratulations on your achievement. We hold up our hands to you, for your hard work, dedication and love. It takes courage to challenge yourself, to reach beyond your comfort levels to embrace new relationships, new ways of knowing – to be changed. We can't thank you enough for choosing to pursue your post-secondary education at VIU.
One of VIU's foundational documents – our Academic Plan – states that VIU's “purpose as a leader in providing high-quality learning is to support the well-being of the people of Vancouver Island and coastal BC by promoting a high quality of life for their communities through commitment to student success, community engagement and associated scholarship.” It might feel overwhelming, being the hope for a future waiting to be born. Or living in a tsunami of electronic data and unprecedented technological achievement. Or experiencing ecological anxiety disorder as we confront species extinctions and climate change. Or wondering how to help address unconscionable poverty, inequality and social injustice in the world. How do you navigate?
I leave you with one thought: Model living a balanced life, so you can skillfully help others. Indigenous laws remind us of the ways we can live in balance with each other and all living things. Well-being means to live in balance with ourselves. Take care of your body as well as your mind and heart. Be kind and gentle with yourself as well as with others. The Dalai Lama famously said, “My religion is simple. My religion is kindness.” Kindness is so radical that it defines this great leader's entire spirituality.
Your degree is a gorgeous invitation to gratitude. There is no greater gift than to be grateful for our lives. Gratitude leads to generosity, because we want to share this gift with others.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission gave each of us the power to stretch out and to mend the part of the world that is broken and within our reach.
A lifetime is so precious and brief. May you have a radically beautiful life.
Louise Mandell, Q.C.
Chancellor
Serving in a volunteer capacity, the Chancellor acts as an ambassador for and a champion of the University. The Chancellor is the titular head of the university, presiding over convocation ceremonies, conferring degrees and providing advice to the President. The Chancellor is a member of the Board of Governors and the Senate.
Message from the Chancellor
Message from the President
Congratulations to all of our February 2019 graduates!
Convocation marks the moment you complete your journey as a student and begin your journey as a VIU alum, taking the first steps on a new path that you have been dreaming about and working towards for many years. It is a moment of celebration and, as with any change, it may also be a time of slight trepidation, wondering about your next steps on your path to lifelong learning and engagement.
By completing your degree, certificate or diploma you have acquired the skills, knowledge and expertise to succeed in the next stage of your life, whether you are pursuing further educational opportunities, beginning a new position, or setting off on a new adventure. The education you received at VIU is recognized on a global scale as one of the best learning experiences a student can have. This was affirmed this year when VIU was nominated for the Higher Education Academy’s Global Teaching Excellence Award – shortlisted from applicants from more than 40 countries and 400 institutions.
Although this day marks a shift in your day-to-day connection to VIU, it is only the next stage in a lifelong connection to this University. Invest in the relationships you have built – with fellow students, your professors or others in our community – and keep them strong. In the years to come, we encourage you to stay in touch. Tell us about your achievements and where life’s journey takes you. You now belong to a strong and vibrant alumni association – with approximately 55,000 members worldwide.
Congratulations on your achievements and success!

Valedictorians
Vanessa StrattonMaster of Business Administration
A valedictorian gives a farewell and congratulatory speech addressed to students, their guests and the institution. VIU's valedictorians are selected by the graduating class through a nomination process and an online election.
VIU's multicultural reputation convinced Deepa Pillay, from India, to come to Nanaimo for a second master's degree, and the deep relationships she formed with classmates from across the world affirmed her decision. Deepa currently works for a marketing agency in Victoria.
Kaily BaldwinBachelor of Education
Highlights of Kaily Baldwin’s time at VIU include meeting peers and faculty members she felt she could be her authentic self around, and travelling to India for an international practicum experience. She is now teaching a Kindergarten/Grade 1 class in Ucluelet.
After working at Ryerson University for several years, Vanessa Stratton decided to go back to school. Since she was already moving to the West Coast so her partner could take a job here, VIU was the natural choice. She is now VIU's MBA Internship Instructor/Coordinator.

Dr. Graham PikeDean of International Education
MacebearerThe mace is carried by a retiring member of the VIU community in recognition of their contributions and service to Vancouver Island University.
For a complete list of past macebearers, please visit viu.ca/convocation/macebearers.asp.
The mace used for VIU's convocation was designed and created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and gold-plated cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled medallions bearing VIU's coat of arms and arbutus emblems.
From Malaspina to VIU, for 20 years Tracy has loved being a teacher, advisor, area chair, chair, instigator, collaborator and colleague.
In particular, she has loved observing and learning about the diversity of cultures and perspectives brought by the students.
Dr. Graham Pike’s passion for enhancing global understanding and social justice through public education is evident from his over 35 years’ experience in international education. His leadership, scholarship and innovation have been recognized across Canada and internationally.
Marvin R.V. Storrow, Q.C., LL.D.
Honorary Doctor of Laws
The awarding of honorary degrees is intended to encourage a standard of excellence and innovation which is exemplary to students, faculty and staff, and to society in general. Vancouver Island University awards honorary degrees to publicly acknowledge members of society who exhibit a record of outstanding distinction and achievement in an area related to Vancouver Island University's mission, such as, but not limited to, scholarship, research, teaching, the creative arts, business and industry, international affairs or public service.
• Honorary Doctor of Laws is awarded for accomplishments and contributions in areas such as politics, justice and social activism.
• Honorary Doctor of Letters is awarded for scholarly accomplishments and contributions in areas such as social science, theory and literature.
Honorary Degrees
Marvin Storrow is an accomplished lawyer whose career includes several groundbreaking cases that have steered the course of legal history in Canada. He has received many distinctions including the highest award from the Canadian Bar Association's British Columbia Branch and the Milvain Chair of Advocacy Award from the University of Calgary, which is awarded to a leading Canadian courtroom lawyer.
Storrow's career has included both civil and criminal cases, including approximately 40 appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada. His expertise covers many areas, but Indigenous law is where his efforts have had the biggest impact. During the 1980s and 1990s, he successfully litigated several groundbreaking cases on constitutional rights and land titles. Three of them have been ranked by a body of Canadian legal scholars as among the top 15 most important cases in the history of Canada.
Storrow is a life bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia, an honorary director of the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) and a trustee of the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. He is a past director of the West Coast Environmental Law Society, Greenpeace, the Aboriginal Law Student Scholarship Trust and the BC Epilepsy Society. In 2012, Storrow was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Allard Law Alumni Association. This award recognizes an extraordinary alumna/alumnus who has set a high standard for volunteerism, philanthropy and/or professional accomplishment, and has been an example for all who follow. Storrow recently received the 2018 JIBC Foundation Anthony P. Pantages Award for his significant contribution in the field of justice. Along with his long list of accomplishments in the law, Storrow is also a supporter of competitive sports and is a Director for Tennis BC.
Professor Kim Samuel
Honorary Doctor of LettersKim Samuel is a pioneer in the field of social connectedness and its significance to inclusive policy and program development on a global scale. She advocates for community-based approaches to economic and social development.
Her work focusing on social isolation as a critical experiential and measurable component of multi-dimensional poverty and other critical issues underscores the importance of social connectedness to human dignity and human rights struggles globally. Samuel is working with communities around the world, from First Nations in Canada to children and caregivers in South Africa, to develop culturally relevant models and programs to overcome isolation.
Samuel is the founder of the Samuel Centre for Social Connectedness (SCSC), a non-profit organization that works to catalyze innovative strategies to build connectedness within and between communities.
She is a Professor of Practice at the Institute for the Study of International Development (ISID) at McGill University. In 2016, Samuel designed and delivered the first academic course in the emerging field of social connectedness and taught another cohort in 2017.
In 2014 and 2016, she convened the Global Symposium on Overcoming Isolation and Deepening Social Connectedness, bringing together more than 100 thought leaders to collaborate and build pathways to belonging. The next Global Symposium will take place in October 2019.
In 2017, she launched the Social Connectedness Fellowship program, which offers recent graduates the opportunity to carry out research related to social isolation and connectedness.
Samuel is writing a book on social isolation and belonging in which she raises awareness about the role of social isolation in many of the world's most pressing issues. The book further explores how individuals, communities, governments and organizations can build for belonging in our society.
Convocation Suite
VIU's Ceremonial Convocation Suite was created by world-renowned artist Arthur Vickers, OBC, DFA, and given by Coast Capital Savings to the University in May 2015 to support the two institutions' common goal of inspiring and celebrating the generations of VIU students, graduates and alumni. The suite also reflects a shared value of Coast Capital Savings and VIU — the belief in the power of education to change people's lives and build strong, vibrant communities. There are three distinct pieces in the Ceremonial Convocation Suite: the Chancellor's Chair, The Keeper of Wisdom and Knowledge; the President and Vice-Chancellor's Chair, The Keeper of Knowledge; and the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box (Huupukwanum), where the parchments are held before being bestowed upon the University's graduates.
The suite is an integral part of the University's convocation ceremony. The Chancellor and President and Vice-Chancellor reside in the two chairs during the ceremony, surrounded by the University's faculty and graduates. During the ceremony, each graduate, after receiving their parchment, is invited to touch the lid of the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box, marking the end of their VIU education and the beginning of the next chapter of their lives. Through this tradition they leave their imprint on the wood, symbolizing the impact and impression they will leave on VIU and weaving their stories together with those of all the graduates who came before them and all who will come after them.
When the ceremonial convocation pieces are not in use at VIU's convocation ceremonies they are on public display at the University's Nanaimo campus in the Welcome Centre (Building 300).
VIU's graduation convocation ceremony begins with a procession of the graduating students, faculty, and distinguished guests into the theatre, led by a bagpiper.
When the platform party has assembled onstage, a smaller procession, known as the Chancellor's Procession, enters the theatre, accompanied by the drumming of VIU's Elders in Residence. The Chancellor's Procession consists of the Chancellor, President, Board Chair, Deans, Senior Administrators, Registrar and macebearer.
Ceremonial Convocation Pieces
Paddle
The paddle that is carried in and out of the theatre by the President was given to the University by Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo when he was installed as VIU's first Chancellor in 2008. During his installation celebrations, Chief Atleo presented a paddle to each of VIU's four campuses with the wish that they be used at special occasions, such as a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the Nanaimo campus is a steering paddle, which helps guide us in our important journeys. It has
since become an important symbol and tradition in our convocation ceremonies. This paddle, made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth, of the Coast Salish/Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved onto the blade represent journeys; salmon leave the place where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much in the same way that youth earn an education and then return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their communities.
MaceDuring the Middle Ages, a metal-clad wooden mace was an effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and in university ceremonies such as this.
At convocation, the mace is carried in and out of the theatre by a retiring member of the VIU community.
Coat of Arms
Granted in 1995, the coat of arms is used at VIU's convocation and on ceremonial documents such as parchments. It pays tribute to the University's West Coast location with eagles (representing wisdom), evergreens, mountains, sea and rivers. As well, it includes symbols that reflect the aspirations of higher learning – books outlined in gold symbolizing wealth, knowledge and understanding; the sun which symbolizes enlightenment and life. First Nations are honoured by the wreath and the red canoe, recognizing their sea-based culture.
Convocation ProcessionMarshals
The graduates from each program are led in the procession by a faculty member or administrative supporter from that program.

Congratulations Grads!Your University is proud of you.
Over at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, join other alumni, faculty, staff members and guests for a reception in the Newcastle Lobby – your first VIU Alumni event!
This is a great opportunity to celebrate with your classmates, instructors, and guests. A commemorative backdrop and photographer will be set up to take free pictures of you with your friends and family. These pictures will then be posted online on the VIU Alumni Association Facebook page facebook.com/viuaa. This reception is free for all graduating students and their guests. Refreshments and finger foods will be provided.
The Campus Store will have commemorative parchment frames and other souvenirs for sale at the reception. You can also return your regalia at the Campus Store's display inside the Mt. Benson Ballroom.

GovernanceUnder the University Act of British Columbia, Vancouver Island University has a bicameral governance structure. The role of the Board of Governors and the Senate is that of strategic oversight, setting overall vision and strategic direction.
The Board of Governors is responsible for overseeing the administrative and business affairs of the University, including finances and property.
The Senate has responsibility for the academic matters of the University and opportunities to offer advice to the Board where academic matters interface with matters of business.
