I feel glad to be amongst all of you here today on the occasion of Convocation 2006. Loyola College has a tradition of developing students’ personality and inculcating social consciousness. Loyola College has been ranked the best science college in India. This is not a surprise because Loyola College has been at the top for the past six years. I am happy to note that in 1925, the College was started by a group of dedicated Jesuits. Today, the college has more than 7,000 students pursuing an array of disciplines which include computer science, visual communication and foreign languages. It is also heartening to note that the institute has b e e n accredited with five star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1999 and A + level in 2006. Over the years, Loyola has produced many star students. Among its famous students are the Central Ministers Thiru. P. Chidambaram, Thiru Dayanidhi Maran and the Tennis star Thiru. Vijay Amritraj. Loyola College also has the credit of being one of the few institutions which educate physically challenged students. I am glad to note that with a community FM Radio service, the college is reaching out to more people than it ever had. The college strives hard to make the students competent, committed and compassionate which is the core of the Jesuit Education. This is what makes Loyola stand above the rest. The commitment to the community especially to poorer sections of the society, has made Loyola College stand distinguished above the rest of the institutions in the country. The adoption of 18 slums in this city is a standing example of its commitment to the community. I feel glad to be amongst all of you here today on theoccasion of Convocation 2006.

Loyola College has a tradition of developing students’personality and inculcating social consciousness. LoyolaCollege has been ranked the best science college inIndia. This is not a surprise because Loyola Collegehas been at the top for the past six years.

I am happy to note that in 1925, the College wasstarted by a group of dedicated Jesuits. Today, thecollege has more than 7,000 students pursuing an arrayof disciplines which include computer science, visualcommunication and foreign languages. It is also

Loyola College also has the credit of beingone of the few institutions which educate physicallychallenged students. I am glad to note that with acommunity FM Radio service, the college is reachingout to more people than it ever had.

degrees. It is a great moment for all of you to cherish in life and this more so tothe parents to see their children successfully coming out of the college.

Both the parents and their wards have fulfilled the criteria as set by the great Tamil PoetThiruvalluvar. What else is needed for an Institute of excellence like the Loyola Collegeto be the ground where this happens. It is befitting that on an occasion like this, I havethe opportunity to be the Chief Guest and to deliver the convocation address.

As our President Dr.A.P.Abdul Kalam has reiterated during his interaction with thestudents, I would like to reiterate that the young, energetic and fresh graduates comingout of Loyola College should dedicate themselves for the upliftment of the society andthe growth and development of our motherland.

At this point of time, I take this opportunity to wish all the fresh graduate students avery bright and prosperous future and wish them all success in their future endeavour.

As Robert Frost said:

The woods are lovely, dark and deepBut I have promises to keep,And miles to go before I sleep,And miles to go before I sleep

I wish all continued success to the college and thank the management for having invitedme to be the Chief Guest to share my thoughts on this momentous occasion.

Thank you all
