Converting a PowerPoint Presentation to Keynote with the iPad

Since most of the presentations from marketing or education are developed in PowerPoint, you will find it more convenient using them in the iPad by first converting them to Keynote.  The procedure is actually quite simple. This brief tutorial will walk you thru the steps. Before you can begin, you will need to have downloaded Keynote from the iTunes App Store.

One method of transferring the PowerPoint presentation into your iPad is via email. Another is to access the file from the Medtronic network. This tutorial begins by showing a PowerPoint file attached to an email. Pressing on this will download the file.

The time to download depends on the size of the file and whether your iPad is connected to a Wi‐Fi network or using 3G. The icon changes once the file is fully downloaded. Pressing on this will open the attachment as a PowerPoint file.

The PowerPoint version of the file will open in a read only format; you can scroll through the different slides but it lacks all the editing and viewing features you are familiar with in using PowerPoint. To begin the conversion to Keynote, press on the screen to open a menu bar. In the top right corner, press “Open In…”.

This image will appear while the iPad imports and automatically converts the file to Keynote. The bar at the bottom of the screen will display the progress as the file is being converted.

In the process of converting a presentation, an advisory screen may appear indicating that “Keynote doesn’t support some aspects of the original presentation”. In this example, Keynote substituted the Arial font with ArialMT. To accept this conversion process, press “Done” in the upper right corner of the screen.

To better understand how to develop a presentation and navigate editing features, open Keynote and complete the presentation on how to “Get Started with Keynote”. From this you will be shown features and methods for creating a new presentation and edit existing presentations using your iPad.
