The city is named after Charlotte Sophia, the wife of King George III . Mecklenburg County is an homage to her homeland, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, located in northern Germany . You can spot Queen Charlotte in statue form at the airport and in Uptown .

Charlotte continues to grow by leaps and bounds . Despite all the changes, many aspects of the Queen City have roots dating back further than you may realize . If you stand at the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets, you’ll see four statues on the corners . They represent commerce, industry, transportation, and the future . Three of the statues are facing toward the sculpture that signifies the future.

Online PreregistrationYour AFCA membership application or renewal, Convention fee, and ticket purchases may be completed on the AFCA website at www.afca.com . Please assist the AFCA staff by prepaying your membership dues and Convention fee by the December 10 deadline . Prepaid attendees can pick up all materials and tickets in Exhibit Halls AB of the Charlotte Convention Center as early as 9:00 am, Sunday, January 7, 2018 .

On-Site RegistrationAFCA On-Site Registration serves two purposes: to allow members to pay their dues if they have not already done so before the deadline and to pick up their Convention credentials . All members are required to wear their badges during all AFCA events . The Registration area is divided into two different entrances, the AFCA Quick Pass area and the Join/Renew area . If you have paid by December 10, 2017, and all of your information is up to date, you may be eligible for the Quick Pass .

The Quick Pass will allow you to scan your Quick Pass ID and register in the most efficient way . Provided your dues and fee meet the December 10 deadline, your Quick Pass will be emailed to you before the Convention (after Christmas) . The Quick Pass can also be accessed on the membership portal . If you have not paid your dues or Convention fee by the deadline, you must register through the Join/Renew lines . This is a slower process than the Quick Pass, so pay on time and keep your information up to date at www.afca.com .

During the 2018 AFCA Convention, Divisional Meetings are held Monday, January 8 . These meetings are a platform for all coaches to come together as the voice of football .

AFCA Skills and Drills Field

Sunday, January 7 – 10 am to 5 pm Monday, January 8 – 9 am to 1 pm

Inside the Exhibit Hall you will find the new, interactive AFCA Skills and Drills Field spotlighting equipment from several exhibitors . The Skills and Drills Field will feature 25 minute casual and interactive demonstrations by various coaches in a “real field” format.

2018 Convention

The AFCA believes staying educated is the best way for coaches to practice responsible influence.

The AFCA Convention is the flagship event of the American Football Coaches Association . It is the largest educational gathering in the football coaching industry . More than 6,000 coaches from all levels of the game gather once a year to learn, network, and fellowship .

Throughout the course of the 2018 AFCA Convention, the Education Division will provide members with a strategically designed curriculum that will address the following core competencies of the football coaching profession:

• Personal Development• Professional Development• X’s & O’s• Program Management• Personnel• Administrative• Ethics• Character

Professional Development Series

The purpose of the Professional Development Series (PDS) is to provide AFCA members an opportunity to participate in ongoing lectures that follow a designed curriculum for career football coaches . In some states, PDS credit can be used as professional development hours towards salary points, college credits and/or recertification.

High School Coaches Academy

The purpose of the High School Coaches Academy (HCSA) is to provide quality programming specific to high school coaches and for those who can only attend the first day of the AFCA convention.

The purpose of the AFCA Education Division is to provide our members with the opportunity to exchange information related to the game of football, the football coaching profession, and the well-being of those who play the game . The AFCA Education Division is funded by the American Football Coaches Foundation®, whose purpose is to support the educational opportunities provided to the members of the American Football Coaches Association and the football coaching profession .

AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches’ Leadership Institute

In January 2016, the American Football Coaches Foundation and NCAA Leadership Development partnered for a prestigious program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession . Thirty outstanding coaches were selected to participate in the inaugural AFCA 30 Under 30 Coaches’ Leadership Institute, which took place in San Antonio, Texas, during the 2016 AFCA Convention .

With the growing amount of talented up-and-coming coaches in the profession, the AFCA decided to increase the number of coaches who can attend the program and broaden the age limit to 35 .

With NCAA Leadership Development and the American Football Coaches Foundation’s involvement, the AFCA has created a one-day institute that features a curriculum of interactive lectures focused on topics specifically tailored to emphasize leadership in the coaching profession, ethics, influential responsibilities, career progression, and family balance.

Members of the AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute receive a stipend to assist with expenses incurred while attending the AFCA Convention, will be published in the bi-monthly AFCA magazine or have their articles added to the AFCA Educational Library, will be placed on the AFCA Foundation Committee, and become a part of the great network of rising coaches in the profession, along with many other great benefits.

First Timers

For those attending the AFCA Convention for the first time, be sure to include the First Timers’ meeting in your itinerary . The meeting will take place Sunday, January 7, from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm, in the Charlotte Convention Center . Coaches who attend the meeting learn how to navigate the speaking sessions in the midst of thousands of attendees at the AFCA Convention . Please check the Convention mobile app or the official on-site Convention program for location.

Club 35 Club 35 Social – Tuesday, January 9, from 8:30 - 10 am

Club 35 is made up of AFCA 35-year members . Being a member of Club 35 is a unique opportunity to take a special role within the AFCA . Club 35 members continue to assist the profession by supporting fellow coaches and their families who have experienced troubles and tragedies. By offering encouragement, support, and prayers to coaches experiencing distress, you can be a significant source of strength. Essentially, Club 35 members become AFCA ambassadors of goodwill .

To assist with your duties as a Club 35 member, the following are ways to show your support of a fellow coach or coach’s family: inform AFCA of significant situations; contact the coach or family to express concern; or offer support and prayers. Closely monitor the situation and send a short note after initial contact to either the coach or family, and follow up with phone calls . You may also inform the family about the American Football Coaches Foundation® and The Plaza of Influence® as ways to honor the coach . Another way to serve is to volunteer and work at The Foundation booth during the annual Convention .

The success of the AFCA Convention depends largely on our committee volunteers . Committees assist the AFCA staff throughout the week in areas such as exhibits, registration, and meal functions, along with many other events . All committee meetings will be held at the Charlotte Convention Center . The respective meeting rooms for each committee will be listed in the official mobile app and the official on-site Convention program. All prepaid committee members will register in Exhibit Halls AB at the Registration area through the designated Committee Registration line . If dues have not been prepaid by December 10, committee members will be sent to the Join/Renew registration lines with the general membership . If you have any questions or suggestions regarding your committee, please do not hesitate to contact Vince Thompson at vince@afca.com . We appreciate you taking the initiative to serve your association!

Hello Ladies,

We hope this summer finds you all enjoying your coach in his downtime, although it seems to be busier than ever with camps, additional sports, and squeezing in weddings and vacations . We here at the AFCWA have been working on your 2018 AFCWA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina . If you have not been to Charlotte, you will want to join us in this beautiful city, rich in culture, sports, and family-friendly activities. This is the first time that Charlotte will be hosting our event and we have some exciting new opportunities for our members!

On Monday, a custom, progressive lunch will allow members the chance to explore a few restaurants around Charlotte and receive VIP service while enjoying the support and camaraderie of one another . You may register and pay for this event along your membership dues and convention registration . We have mainstreamed our site and our forms to make the process easier and more convenient for you .

A NEW TWIST on our traditional hospital visit combines service, sports, and speed as we will collaborate with Levine’s Children’s Hospital, Luke’s FastBreaks and Hendrick Motorsports . We will be collecting school team t-shirts (donated by AFCWA members) throughout the months of August and September which will be sent to Luke’s FastBreaks to customize them into medical shirts for use by children receiving care . These custom medical shirts allow medical access in a comfortable shirt with cool styles highlighting your teams from all levels . The medical shirts will be presented to Levine Children’s Hospital during our visit . You can find more information on how to donate a t-shirt on our website . Charlotte is known for NASCAR and Hendrick Motorsports will be joining us in this effort and will add some star power to our visit . We know that you ladies have huge hearts for service and our list of those wanting to go on the hospital visit always exceeds available slots . Levine Children’s Hospital is going to provide additional slots for the visit this year and there are going to be some fun ways you can qualify for a chance to join us for this trip . Be sure to check our social media sites for these opportunities .

Our Hospitality room will continue to be a place of warm welcome where you can meet up with old friends and make many new ones . Our programs on Monday will give you new ideas, help you plan for the future, and refresh your commitment to this “wife life.” We will still have our annual Luncheon with a speaker that promises to entertain and inspire on Tuesday afternoon .

We hope to see you in Charlotte as we meet in the spirit of support, service and camaraderie . Come laugh, share stories, gain and share knowledge, hug, and leave feeling ready to face whatever comes next .
