Development Goals together with UNICEF

UNICEF is looking for multi-year, high value solutions with supply chain sector leaders to support UNICEF kit packing operations in Africa

Target Services Solution This is an open call for any business providing warehousing services who is interested in working in partnership with UNICEF to realize shared value in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. As a starting point, UNICEF is interested in receiving proposals and ideas for kit packing operations in Africa. UNICEF is open to partnerships with different companies providing in-kind services and expertise. Any proposal shall be within the following scope. Scope Long-term multi-year proposals between UNICEF and the partner / donor, including the following services free of cost to UNICEF:

• Receiving and consolidation of all components for the packing of the kits • Packing of the kits • Dispatch of kits Type of kit packing: • Kit packing of Interagency Emergency Health Kit (IEHK) - approx. 4,000 kits annually and

Education kits – approx. 75,000 kits annually • Composition of the kits and packing details are attached as Annex 1

Location for kit packing operation: • Centrally located with road, sea and air connectivity to countries in Africa and Middle East • UNICEF will procure and deliver the component of the kits to the proposed kit packing location Prerequisites and mandatory requirements for packing IEHK • Bonded warehouse facility in a secure area equipped with racking and temperature controlled to

store pharmaceuticals (below 25 degrees Celsius) • Segregated area in the warehouse for goods receipt, storage, packing and dispatch • Availability of a certification from a national authority to handle, store and distribute

pharmaceuticals • Compliance with WHO’s GDP (Good Distribution Practice) for handling of pharmaceuticals:

• Management of waste and disposal of expired products including medicines according to national standards

• ERP system ensuring full batch traceability and compliance with FIFO/FEFO principle • Experience with management of pharmaceuticals and medicinal products and kit packing of such • Experience with import of pharmaceuticals and medicinal products • Experience with export of kit-packings including pharmaceuticals and medicinal products • Ability to obtain custom clearance approval for export of the kits within 24 hours for emergency

Every year, UNICEF transports

life-saving supplies to children from over 50 countries to programmes in close to 150

countries.

In 2018 alone, UNICEF purchased over $3.48 billion of goods and services from over 11,000 businesses, including 2.36 billion doses of vaccines preventing the biggest killer diseases; 47,760

tonnes of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF); $110 million water and

sanitation supplies; and $277 million medications that UNICEF rushed to

disaster zones hours after cyclones, hurricanes or conflict situations that caused children

to lose everything in a matter of minutes. Each year, UNICEF needs to move some 14,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) by sea and 13,000 metric tons by air, with 66% percent of all shipments destined to African countries. UNICEF kit packing operations Access to affordable, high-quality vaccines, medicines, water and sanitation and education supplies is critical to realizing the rights of children. Currently, all education, health, nutrition, water and sanitation kits are packed in the global UNICEF warehouse in Copenhagen, Denmark. UNICEF’s Supply Catalogue provides an overview of the different kits and their composition. In 2018, UNICEF packed 185,400 kits, of which approximately 9,000 Interagency Emergency Health Kits (IEHK) and 75,000 Education kits. Nearly 75% of the IEHK kits and Education kits were delivered

to countries in the East and Southern Africa region, the Middle East and North Africa region and the West and Central Africa region.

Underpinning the world’s agreed ambitious goals to create sustainable development across the areas of health, education, equality, environment and all other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, are supply chains like UNICEF’s, which ensure that life-saving and life changing supplies reach every child no matter where they are in the world. The private sector is already contributing extensively in realizing UNICEF’s goals and has the potential to further and

rapidly accelerate progress on UNICEF’s programme results for children. Therefore, we are seeking to work with the private sector in a new way, one that brings together the power, impact and assets of a company to the global work that UNICEF is doing in support of children. The cartons shall be cross stacked on the pallets whenever possible. No overhang is allowed.

1.3 Wrapping The cargo on the pallets shall be shrink-wrapped. The shrink-wrapping shall allow the pallet to be handled by fork-lift. Loose foil ends are not tolerated. Pallets must not be wrapped together.

1.4 Strapping As an alternative to shrink-wrapping, the cargo can be fixed with straps of polypropylene. Steel straps are not acceptable. The cargo shall be fixed with at least 4 straps, 2 on the pallet’s short side and 2 on its long side.
